I decided to round off this year with a Christmas cover. I chose the Carol of the Bells, with guest vocals from Naz as we've always wanted to cover this but it has always felt like too much of a challenge. This year we gave it a go, hope you like it!

I love dark folk songs, and this is as dark as it gets!

This is a traditional folk song with Northumbrian origins.

The version I’ve recorded was inspired by the Wainwrights sisters version but with added instrumentation that I wrote. I absolutely love the harmonies in this arrangement. 

It gives an account of the murder of a woman and her infant son by Long Lankin, who tricked the “False maid” into helping with the murder. In the end, he is hanged and she is burnt at the stake.

My arrangment of Geordie, a traditional song originating in England concerning the trial of the eponymous hero whose lover pleads for his life. 

I took inspiration from the version by Joan Baez, with added harmonies and cello.

This song is inspired by my interest in genealogy, which has lead to lots of interesting discoveries, the solving of one mystery and the discovery of many more.

It’s about the desire to look back into the past and the stories that came before, secrets buried away and how past sacrifices impacted the present.

This song is a political protest against corruption, greed, and the abuse of power by the elite. It criticises our leaders who prioritise their own interests over the public, highlighting war, selective empathy, and media manipulation and act with impunity. It urges collective action and resistance, stressing that passivity only perpetuates injustice.

This track challenges traditional notions of national pride, offering a more empathetic and inclusive perspective. It critiques the idea of pride as something rooted in self-interest, nationalism, or resistance to change, and instead promotes the idea of pride as openness, generosity, and responsibility toward others and future generations.

Pride (Doesn't Have to be)

Kindred Fawn is the solo project of London-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Ella Patenall (Dogviolet, Naz & Ella) who started the project as a creative outlet to experiment with ethereal sounds and textures. Kindred Fawn blends layers of guitar with lyric-driven harmonies and crisp vocal lines, taking inspiration from artists like Kate Bush, Pearl Jam and Radiohead. 

Her songs tell stories through setting atmospheric scenes and describing strong imagery, juxtaposing the harsh realities of life with moments of hope and light. 

Her debut album 'Archives of the Mist' comes out Autumn 2023.
