The trio of DJ Harper x JULEZ (1/2 of Rude Operator) x Kinetiks MC joined by special guest and my brother, the DJ Seven, deliver the goods in a 3 hour+ live broadcast captured on the Resonate DC Twitch on Sunday night, 2/28/21. This session got a bit hot as I was also celebrating my birthday weekend in the place for this one! This one covers all the dynamics and flavors of drum & bass with an ever-shifting vibe and running sound all night. 

The Sunday Night Skankout is a mix series from DC-area natives Harper, Julian, and Amit that takes place on Sunday nights at a range of locations. You can pop this mix on for a long drive, a proper gym session or run, or while you are working. Keeping the energy level up and the beats fresh, this one rolls in rotation.

Bay 6, In The Mix #007 - Ben Rolo

After his track 'Gator Skin' receiving airtime multiple times on BBC Radio Introducing in York and North Yorkshire, we are proud to welcome fresh talent Flicka back to Detached Audio to kick off our year with a 6-track EP, showcasing his stunning musicality and flow.

We begin the year with the serene 'Bird in the Basket', featuring close friend Kingsley who delivers a stellar vocal performance over an emotive piano piece that gracefully dances over smooth basslines and a delicate beat. This is followed by 'Gateway', a more traditional liquid roller which is carried through with elegant saxophones and mystical pads.

Flicka turns the noire jazz aesthetic in his music up a notch for 'How Can I' featuring the vocal talents of Chris B. Chris' vocal tones effortlessly sit on top of jazzy chords and a rugged bass guitar, showcasing Flicka's talent in creating pristine vocal-led music. Flicka drops the tempo down for a quick interlude in the form of 'Cadence'. Picking up from where the previous track ended, we get to see this young artist flex his piano skills over a rugged hip hop beat, showcasing his versatility while retaining his signature sound.

'Answerphone' is the penultimate track in this body of work, sultry vocal snippets carry this roller which is in equal parts soulful as it is gritty. This leads into the final track to close this project off, 'Date Night'. The organ takes precedence in this track, with a rustic and vintage vibe reminiscent of early High Contrast work.

"I wanted to create this EP to capture elements of music I associate with. You can hear soul and jazz influences as well as moments of emotion I've always loved from the romantic era of music."
These are the words Flicka has in regards to this project he has created for us and it is clear that he has managed to craft a distinct identity for himself, blending these influences.

"At the time of writing, the country was in a sorry state and I wanted to make music that could take people away from the doom and gloom. If any of the tracks have a positive effect even for just a few minutes, then I've done my job." - Flicka

Music can take you so many places. I once freestyled with C-Rayz Walz back in 2003 in a dark alley in Baltimore near the Ottobar. In September 2024, I performed at Sun & Bass alongside the DJ Strife at Ambra Day, San Teodoro, Sardinia - a global mecca of drum & bass. When you are the conduit between the DJ and the crowd, the medium by which expression is felt and shared.  In those moments you are able to influence the crowd + what people may think or feel, the night, and the direction it will follow.  Ultimately, that memory will be yours to keep forever.  I have been freestyling, writing music, and emceeing for over 22 years now with no plans to change.  My goal is to share a piece of who I am every time I perform for those who listen.  I emcee simply because I love it.
