When you think about dancehall, the first things that may come to mind are massive speakers with louder than life sound men shouting over familiar riddims, thumping horns and a heavy bassline.  But if you’re paying any attention to the pop songs taking over the radio waves today, you will definitely be able to pick up the dancehall influence as the sound is so versatile it has the ability to transform and blend into almost any genre.  

Toronto’s own, long time producer and soundman, DJ King Python (formerly Vanity Muscles) recognized this, and decided to put words into action by combining the roughest and toughest dancehall riddims out with vocals from some of the more popular R&B records.  Many DJ’s face challenges in introducing new music to listeners and find themselves watering down their sound to appeal to a larger demographic.  As a resolution and a means to stay true to himself, DJ King Python, a modern day “Mary Poppins” began making these simple blends using familiar vocals from hit songs alongside the newest dancehall riddims.  In true King Python fashion, just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. 

After spending a considerable amount of time heavily involved in the Toronto music scene, and through his travels back and forth to Jamaica, DJ King Python has been able to create his own sound that is so distinct to not only him, but one that many Torontonians can relate to.  His debut mix under his new moniker, DJ King Python, aptly titled King Python Blendz Vol. 1 is a tribute to another era, one that was pioneered by New York DJ Ron G and offers listeners the perfect balance of R&B hits with contemporary riddims currently running the Caribbean.  You can expect to hear a lot more from King Python, not only in terms of blend tapes but also live and direct at his signature dancehall night called Same Way at The Red Light (1185 Dundas Street W), in the heart of Ossington.  Get your costumes ready for the next instalment of Same Way going down on Halloween night, October 31, 2014.
