The Kif Kif Riddim [West Coast Studios - 2014]

And biggup Saj Moor and his West Coast Studios imprint from out of Morocco for their latest release, the Kif Kif Riddim. WCS is interesting and every time you hear from them they're pushing compelling works and this time, which may be their first riddim compilation (to date I always recall them focusing on singles), is no different. The old-school-ish and very familiar Kif Kif Riddim is outstanding and Moor and co. have turned it over to some truly talented vocalists. Like who???! Check Perfect Giddimani espousing on one of his most dear subjects on 'Just An Ounce Ounce', Belizean dynamo Ras Indio with 'Plant Di Corn', and the woefully under-recorded and underrated Arkaingelle with 'Rastaman Ah Chant'. Luv Fyah, Binghi Ghost and Fikir Amlak (especially Amlak with the infectious 'Hi Grade'). Unsurprisingly, however, to my opinion it is WCS staple, Ras Attitude, who gives the Kif Kif its biggest highlight with 'Green Gold Rush'.

Desbert “Chezidek” Johnson has become one of Jamaica’s most
distinctive and prolific contemporary singers. Originally hailing from
St. Anne’s he first rose to international success in the
late 1990’s with hits such as “Leave De Trees”, “Break free”
“Harvest Time” and "Can't Hear Must Feel" for
Philip "Fatis” Burrell's Xterminator label.

Manasseh supplies a suitable and finely balanced one-drop style
rhythm track, complete with a Black Ark style drum machine intro!
Chezidek’s sweet and soulful vocals ride over the rhythm of live bass, luscious organ licks and vintage drum sounds, like a cool breeze as he proclaims his determination to fulfil his mission in life:

Rafael Lápide começou sua carreira em 1999, como um dos frutos da boa safra de MCs saída da festa Zoeira, que acontecia semanalmente na Lapa. O hip hop foi decisivo para forjar sua característica freestyler em seus flows desconsertantes. Nos últimos anos tem se dedicado como singjay e deejay ao Reggae e ao Dancehall, gêneros nascidos na Jamaica, tornando-se MC residente da Digital Dubs, sound system número 1 no Rio de Janeiro dos gêneros. Esse viés deflagrou sua incursão na cultura africana através da busca por outras vertentes da música preta mundial.
Figura requisitada nos principais eventos do mundo do Reggae, já participou junto ao coletivo Interferência Sistema de Som com o Faya Riddims, grupo do coletivo, além de apresentações com DJs renomados e músicos tarimbados no Planeta Reggae, Quintessential Grooves, Binghi, Urcasonica, com a banda Mundo Ácido, entre outras. Passou por várias casas e palcos célebres no Rio de Janeiro, como Circo Voador, Clandestino, casas do Grupo Matriz, dentre outros.
Capaz de transitar livremente e com extrema desenvoltura do Afrobeat ao Hip Hop, passando pelo Reggae e o Dancehall e, ainda, submergindo nas influências musicais dos países lusófonos da África – com os quais estabelece conexão a partir da parceria firmada com Sentinela, de Cabo Verde –, Lápide quer ver e ouvir as coisas ficarem pretas: nas Américas, nas Antilhas, na África, em todo lugar.

MC Lápide

Rafael Lápide began his career in 1999 as one of the most promissing MCs at Zoeira, party which took place weekly in Lapa. Hip hop has been fundamental in forging his freestyling and flows characteristics. In recent years dedicated his musical efforts as singjay and deejay into Reggae and Dancehall, styles born in Jamaica, and became a resident MC in Digital Dubs, sound system number one in Rio de Janeiro. This moviment towards Reggae sparked his ideas into African culture through the search for other stryles of black music worldwide.

Required to sing in the main Reggae events, has participated with Interferência Sound System with Faya Riddims, group of the the collective, also performed with renowned DJs and well known musicians on Planet Reggae, Quintessential Grooves, Binghi, Urcasonica with Mundo Ácido (band), among others. He performed in several clubs and famous stages in Rio de Janeiro, such as Circo Voador, Clandestino, Grupo Matriz clubs and parties, among others.

Able to move freely and experienced from Afrobeat to Hip Hop, passing by Reggae and Dancehall, and yet, submerging into musical influences of the Lusophone countries of Africa - with which he connects through a partnership signed with Sentinela, from Cape Verde - , Lápide wants to see the world from the worldwide black music's perspective: from America, from the Caribbean, from Africa, from everywhere.
