Even though he enjoyed strong feedback to his Sweet Personality rhythm five years ago, producer Garfield Cowan believed he could improve on some of the songs featured on it. Those, and more, can be heard on Reggae Hits Vol 1, released last Friday by his Nature's Way Entertainment label.

There are new songs on the album including "Free Up The Grades" by King Mas and Jemere Morgan, and Mdees' I Can't Breathe. Boston-born King Mas is the son of Montserrat Calypsonian Supreme and his Jamaican wife, while Morgan is son of Morgan Heritage member Gramps.

According to Cowan, he has deliberately worked with mainly singers since the onset of Nature's Way.

“The reason is that I tend to see and hear the singers. Their songs are timeless and are loved by more reggae fans,” he said.

Nearly a century ago, in the year 1920, the honorable Marcus Mosiah Garvey prophesied:

“Look to the East for the crowning of a Black King, he is the Redeemer for the days of deliverance are near.” 
 
In the spirit of the great ancestor, an army of Roots Reggae soldiers have organized and centralized in a musical tribute to our forefathers (and mothers) who have paved the way for Rastafari culture and Afrikan liberation theology as I & I carry the torch into the new millennium.

The "To Di East" Riddim, available on all digital music platforms as of April 6th, is the brainchild of the Jah-N-I Roots Movement in collaboration with the Bantu Nation Movement. Both collectives operate out of Boston, Massachusetts with seasoned musicians, Jahriffe & King MAS respectively, as the spearheads of each production team. The musicians responsible for this instrumental, infused with a celestial tone and vibration, are one of Boston's top musical ensembles known as Circadian Riddims. Many recognize the potency of the "American Reggae" music coming out of Hawaii and California, but this heavy one-drop Reggae release will give you a reason to look "To Di East".

In the opening number, Jahriffe teams up with Jamaican Reggae veteran Warrior King. Drawing upon the often quoted biblical verse "in my father's house are many mansions," the warriors cry out for "tolerance" and unity in these times of division and strife amongst nations.

The dub heavy sound of the project is due to the masterful mix provided by the skilled hands of Wadadah II of the D.O.V.E. Muzik recording label out of Chicago, Illinois. Emerging from this powerful musical camp, founded by Tzaddi Wadadah I circa 1983, 2 vital messengers are featured on this project by the names Kazayah & Ras I-Dre.

Kazayah sets the tone early on with her "mission" statement urging one and all to put aside "petty prejudices" and "come together" with a tone and delivery both hypnotic and captivating. 

Ras I-Dre, a young fierce lyricist from Jamaica, then invokes the entire pantheon of Roots Reggae legends (past and present) in a tune paying homage to all who have maintained the vitality and integrity of this "Sweet Reggae" music throughout the years featuring vocal harmonies from Kazayah.

As usual, King MAS reaches into the ancestral realm as the "musical Obia man" and highlights one of the founding fathers of the Ashanti kingdom by the name Okomfo Anokye. "Can't Draw We Out" brings light to the sword that Anokye drove into the ground during his time as an Ashanti high priest in the 17th century. Anokye stated that "if anyone removes the sword, that marks the end of the Ashanti kingdom." The legendary sword, which remains unmoved & can still be seen in Kumasi today, inspired this musical tribute expressing solidarity between the people of Ghana and the children of the bloodline carried into the diaspora.

Finally, Jahriffe reveals more musical Mdu Ntr as he encourages one and all to "be who you come to be" and recognize your own divinity. "God Body" is followed by the "Spiritual Ancestor" dub mix by Wadadah II which any Roots Reggae practitioner would do well to add to their collection. As we move through the vernal equinox, the light of the sun rising from the east has overtaken the darkness enveloping the planet during the winter months. Just like the ever increasing power of the sun, look out for more heat from these Reggae warriors and light bearers ‘trodding’ from the east and chanting "To Di East".

Reggae music is no more immune to the manipulation of its creators than any other genre of music where popularity (and profitability) often overshadows true talent and creativity. However, history has shown that great music is eternal and those who are daring enough to produce truly inspired works leave an imprint on the collective consciousness of the world for generations to come.

Enter Chaddy Royal, a Brooklyn native of Caribbean heritage, who delivers an insightful critique of the cult of celebrity within the music industry with his latest single “Celebrity Entertainer”. With a deadly combination of lyrics and melodies, Chaddy delineates the many pitfalls that artists face when they compromise their principles in an effort to achieve fame, wealth, and status. Currently residing in Baltimore, and with over a decade of musical experience to his credit, Chaddy’s worldview is deeply grounded in the study of Rastafari teachings along with knowledge gained through direct experience in the African continent.

The topic is expounded upon further by King MAS, “the musical Obeah man”, who conjures up a haunting performance with a level of penmanship that the Grammy-winning songwriter has become infamous for. Backed by the the regal brass section and the thundering bass of the riddim (dubbed “Grand Strategy”), King MAS & Chaddy Royal are the first artists to appear on this Bantu Nation Movement production built in its entirety within the African continent by the capable hands of Congo Ayo. The rhythm compilations will feature contributions from Perfect Giddimani, Jalifa, Koro Fyah, Rapha Pico, & more!

These sounds coming out of Gauteng (Johannesburg, South Africa) embody the spirit of the Bantu Nation Movement. With Africa at the center, and her children in the diaspora surrounding her, get works are sure to be achieved. With Suriname, Trinidad, the US, & Jamaica represented, this first riddim compilation will be the first of many projects to manifest African unity through Reggae music in order to inspire unity in all areas of activity.

This one is a classic blend of old and new. Coming from as far as the UK, this riddim was produced by "Dready" (the maker of Chipmunk feat. Mavado - Any Gal, Busta Rhymes ft Vybz Kartel - Whine and Go Down and many more certified dancehall hits) sampled from the Leroy Smart classic "The Victory" over the "Unchained" riddim. Mas shows his versatility on this slightly hip-hop oriented track with singing and chanting masterfully and sending a message that the new generation of musical warriors has arrived and all who fight to undermine them shall "Fade Away"..

Since it's original release in 2009, "Mek Dem Gwaan" has been a certified hit and a classic in underground Roots circles. Although, due to the unscrupulous business practices of his previous musical partners, MAS has never seen a dime from a tune written and musically composed on his own. "I was only 20 years old and I wasn't as knowledgeable business-wise at the time" says MAS "but the time is coming when they will have to give me my fair share. It's not about money per se, it's about the principal". Shady business aside, this one is still a massive Roots anthem and it has been given new life with the legendary production skills of Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace of Rockaz fame. The rebellious tone of the tune hasn't changed as King MAS supplies a  slogan for all to leave the wicked and the naysayers to their own devices and "Mek Dem Gwaan"..

In a moment in time where mankind is descending into a state of mass hysteria and panic, one can only view "Cannibal" as a prophetic message. As the national guard is deployed across the United State (also known as the "divided snakes") of America to "contain" the burning and looting that could possibly ensue, the "consumer culture" has now been identified as a threat with more capacity for destruction than COVID-19 itself.

King MAS & Young Shanty, sons of Afrika living in the west, spoke of these times YEARS before they would manifest (one need only reference Young Shanty's "Poor Can't Take No More" album to verify this). Incidentally, King MAS issued a grave omen about the potential "Zombie Apocalypse" in the fall of 2015 alongside Royal Order Music group. The Dub Club Riddim by Giddimani Records has now been released to reinforce that message as most of mankind's population is under threat to be put under mandatory lockdown for a virus that is only fatal in 2% of all cases. From Buju to Busta, to Beres and, Brian McKnight, The King immersed himself in varied types of music. It was this experience that shaped his existence as an exceptional artiste with an international following. 

King Mas acknowledges his divine purpose for living, also known as Nkrabea. Drawing from African spirituality, The King crafts distinctive words and sound to release life-altering energy, aiding mankind in realizing itself. With songs like, “Walk Like A Champion” and “Reflection”, King Mas chooses to heal rather than simply entertain. It is through this calling that he has earned the moniker “Musical Obeah Man”, paying homage to his Afro-Caribbean roots. 

To date, King Mas has performed all over the United States and the four corners of the world. From Lebanon to Lintz, to the Limpopo River, The King has electrified audiences with his unique vocal style, often delivering encore performances.
