Being way out of touch and not having any idea what gabber was, I took a crash course. Turns out to be good ol’ hardcore techno! Can’t say it ever did much for me, but that’s probably just an age thing. Anyway, many of the tracks I came across had some fascinating dynamics. I picked this one as a sound source:

and fed it into my trusty outdated ambient v.3 software.

And this, with some multi-tracking and tonal tweaking, was the result. For me, it’s ambient but still has elements of the brutal power of the original. And just 1 real beat in 5 minutes!

The Assignment: Field-test a hybrid genre.

Gabber and ambient music seem like polar opposites. Gabber is typified by a constant distorted kick drum pummelling you at upwards of 200bpm. Ambient, on the other hand, can be deeply immersive or barely noticeable. This project asks the question: is “gabber ambient” possible?

Step 1: Consider what makes gabber gabber and what makes ambient ambient. Where is there crossover?

Step 2: Make a track that could be construed as “gabba ambient.”

Step 3: You’re probably going to want to delete it. Try not to. Save and upload.

Disquiet Junto Project 0601: Hard Six

L`idea di come creare/strutturare il pezzo è nata mentre stavo testando alcuni sequencers M4L, specialmente quelli che permettevano un buona randomizzazione, in modo da ottenere linee melodiche casuali non troppo scontate (https://maxforlive.com/library/index.php).
Il secondo passaggio è stato l`abbinamento di questi 6 sequencers a 6 strumenti diversi. Anche in questo caso ho preferito strumenti acustici dal carattere percussivo.

2) Generative + Acoustic Piano
3) Pas à Pas +  Acoustic Piano
4) LBC Synplant + Surge XT
5) GenStep 1 + Matapiano
6) Doc Drunken Pitch + Ting (Percussive Instrument)

Step 2: Roll a single die for each of the six segments chosen in Step 1.

Abbinamenti (Relative presence = frequency of appearance):
Number 1 -- Group 6
Number 2 -- Group 5
Number 3 -- Group 4
Number 4 -- Group 3

The idea of how to create/structure the piece was born while I was testing some M4L sequencers, especially those that allow good randomization, in order to obtain random melodic lines that are not too obvious ,

The second step was the combination of these 6 sequencers with 6 different instruments. Also in this case I preferred acoustic instruments with a percussive character.
