Manchester based quartet, Mercury's unashamed rock 'n' roll aesthetic draws influences from a wide spectrum of musical genres such as as Classical Avant-Garde, ECM jazz, Dub-Step and Grunge. Mercury constantly endeavour to find new ways to interpret the traditional roles within the Jazz Quartet format. This is improvised jazz music from a different place, looking back whilst striding confidently forward.

Following their sell-out Kings Place gig in October 2012, pianist and composer Tim Richards' six piece HEXTET returns for another set of hard bop and contemporary originals.

Line-up will include ex-Ronnie Scott trumpeter Dick Pearce and US3/Incognito saxman Ed Jones, with new face Ralph Wyld on vibes. The first set will feature a special solo piano performance of material by Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk, alongside Tim's own compositions.

Raga Lalita-Gauri is named after the manifestations of the Divine Mother or Shakti. Filled with pathos and depth, it is one of the most beautiful sunset ragas. The composition is set to a 14-beat time cycle called ada chautaal followed by a fast composition set to a 16-beat time cycle called teentaal.

Wimme Saari and Miguel Santos. Sounds From The Arctic Cool: A Kings Place Podcast

In a new podcast for Nature Unwrapped, composer and sound recordist Chris Watson follows the overgrown railway path between Aldeburgh and Saxmundham, a favourite haunt of composer Benjamin Britten, recording an array of elemental, animal and bird sounds, including the outpouring of a nightingale.

The Old Railway Path was originally conceived as an installation in Hall One. In response to the current situation Chris Watson has created a narrated podcast for the Kings Place audience.

Denied access to the wildernesses where he usually records, our Artist in residence Chris Watson has rediscovered the joy of a dawn chorus in his own back garden.

Hanging his microphone in an old apple tree, he catches a chorus of spectacular solos, by blackbird, dunnock, bluetit and wren.

Dryburn Moor is a treeless Northumbrian landscape and the gathering songs are mostly delivered from the wing. Curlews describe low arcs announcing their names whilst lapwing and redshank waver and warble.
