Way up north, near my hometown
is a place no one goes when the sun goes down
past the dump, with the garbage and the rats
a brown river crawls through the Cottonwood Flats

Used to ride our bikes to the river some days
my ghetto box blasting Purple Haze
try to catch fish and junk like that
then go listen to the wind moan through the Cottonwood Flats

Camping overnight in Big John's tent
telling all the best lies we could invent
watching bugs being hunted by bats
until the stars shimmered high above the Cottonwood Flats

Now and then, when I'm thinking I'm wise
I see my life through my childhood eyes
something tells me I ought to go back
and do a little rambling in the Cottonwood Flats

A Hard Go

My reaction to a recent unaliving event. This is a Suno remake of my original one mic guitar and vocal recording the day I wrote it. It follows my melody chords and phrasing faithfully. I instructed it to ad vocal ad libs. I will replace the trumpet solo.

Hoping for umbrellas while rain falls harder as one more you have to save.

Sin Tonight

Written when the Queensland floods in 2011 were peaking, and recorded soon after. A storm at our studio was added later.

In a Chinese Café, chopsticks in my hand
Eating rice and scallops like an educated man
She blew right in the doorway and all dimensions changed     
The river waves were lapping all along the grange                       
Brown water carried lives away
Dragging them to nowhere a place they’ll always stay

On a road out in the ranges with the window down
The clouds were swelling greyly on the east side of town
She blew right down the valley all the land was drowned    
The road became a river houses floated down
