James Perryman first played at Kings, Queens and Rascals early this year in a duet with Olivia Coghill - they charmed with a great set which included a cover of Kate Bush's 'Running Up that Hill'. We made sure to ask him back as soon as he was able. This time round he was joined by band members on percussion and bass/backing vocals. His songs contain shifts in lyric and tone that forces one to listen carefully. The quality of his songwriting is evident and here his accompanists push the tunes along with subtle bass, percussion and harmony. Dan says, 'I'm a London-based hyphen-loving alt-folk singer-songwriter, forever striving to write a song that's as good as one by Elliott Smith!' Well when he played at Kings, Queens and Rascals to a rapt audience its my opinion he can cross that one off the wish list. Dan's voice is tender and rather haunting at times; the vocal rise and fall surprises and draws one in. Dan sings like he means it and his lyrics speak of heartfelt experiences. It was a pleasure to hear him and we look forward to having him back in the new year.

'KINGS, QUEENS AND RASCALS' started as a weekly event in the Castle Pub, Portobello Road, London. We mounted great evenings of music for over two years, making new friends and winning fans from all over London. 

Now housed in the historic ‘King and Queen’ Pub in Central London we are proud to host music evenings of breadth and quality, inviting singers, songwriters and bands who are at the top of their game to perform for appreciative audiences who come to hear good music and enjoy a great atmosphere. You can expect high quality singers and songwriters, bands and duos, playing original material and quirky covers.  Entry is free and you can make a voluntary donation to Macmillan Cancer Care on the evening - drop some coins in the bucket!

The King and Queen pub has been a venue for music since the 60's and was where, in 1962, Bob Dylan played his first gig outside of the United States. If this venue was good enough for him then it's good enough for us! Indeed, our evenings are held in the very same room Bob played!
