On a sunny day off, I’m on the dancefloor at a Hernan Cattaneo party, of course. He played one of the most infectious melodies I’ve heard. What is this track?

Being the nice guy he is, he let me pop up to the booth and take a picture of the ID.

“Masai” by MATIRAMIC Who is this guy? Where can I find this track? I messaged MATIRAMIC on Instagram and expressed my love for the track, which happened to be unsigned.

He was thrilled I liked it, and we offered him a release on diviine + a “Spencer Brown Rethink” for my sets. We were both so excited to make it happen.

Returning for a 24th appearance on the Meanwhile imprint he carefully curates with his fellow countryman, GMJ delivers yet another slice of progressive heaven with “Feel Inside / Living Memory”.

As we approach the end of the year, GMJ is in reflective mood for his final original EP of 2024. After a stellar year which has seen a steady flow of 24-carat gold music on such celebrated imprints as Balance Music, Vapour Recordings, Proton Music and Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, the Melbourne-resident continues to deliver equally stunning new music on the Meanwhile and Meanwhile Horizons imprints he owns with production partner, Matter.

The opener finds “Feel Inside” providing a magical rhythmic backdrop that bristles with vibrancy alongside a cavernous sub-bassline groove. Chock full of bubbling dancefloor dynamism, a metallically cadenced synth pattern filters in and out of prominence while a looped vocal phrase repeats over the rhythmic collage before revealing itself more fully at the breakdown. Building once more, the hefty beat drops back into the rolling percussive hi-hats and metallic synth phrase to create a storming club-friendly colossus.

Written when his grandfather passed away earlier in the year, “Living Memory” serves as a tribute to a life well-lived and a much-loved character. As Gavin so eloquently puts it, “he is always alive as an inspiration in my memories for both his musical prowess and the person he was.” Redolent in the same rolling rhythmic backdrop as its partner track, immaculately placed woodblock percussion adds to the driving vitality. Providing easy juxtaposition, a beautiful piano sequence is soon introduced which suffuses the track with a contemplative air and effortless beauty. Waxing and waning fluently over its near 9-minute timeframe, a complementary synth motif builds through the breakdown before breathy vox pads and the earlier piano provide a latticework of sounds that find GMJ in majestic form with a perfect sonic tribute.

Hitting another high watermark with two powerful original works, GMJ is at his peerless best with “Feel Inside / Living Memory”.

Who better to kick off the inaugural release of SOBO [Sounds Of Beaubien Ouest] than Patrick Holland, best known as Project Pablo. Affiliated with the Canadian Riviera's 1080p troupe, as well as Seb Wildblood's Church and Lone's Magicwire – Holland now adds Beaubien Dream as the fourth instalment to his 12" series. The Beaubien connection comes from Montreal's Rue Beaubien, of which Holland is a resident. SOBO is headed up by fellow longstanding citizens of the Beaubien Ouest hood, Arbutus Records and their extended family – of which Holland is an instrumental part.

An initial teaser of the EP's opening "Closer" was aired publicly during Holland's BR London set back in October, as well as his NTS appearance with Lone and Gabriola earlier this year. Now, after a patient seven-month wait, we can finally wrap our mitts around it in its entirety. Alongside its two subsequent components, the track acts as a homage to Holland's home. With its distinctive Dx7 melodies, jingly percussion provided by bells (of the cow variety amongst others) and an insatiable groove growing lazily throughout – "Closer" is instantaneous happiness.

Tash's Movement Recordings continues a strong summer season by welcoming Alex O'Rion to the label for his debut EP.  As one of the Netherlands most highly regarded and sought-after artists, the Nijkerk resident has found favour amongst progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Guy J, while finding a home on Sudbeat Music, Hope Recordings and Cid inc's Replug Records. Now fresh off a collaborative EP with Antrim for Roger Martinez's Higher States, Alex makes his Movement Recordings debut with 'Blue'.  Sitting firmly amongst progressive music's elite, Alex continues this wave of momentum with three more memorable pieces, beginning with 'Stripped'. Fuelled by rhythm and groove; it's well sculpted foundation, driving percussion and unpredictable tonality form the backbone of this thrilling journey. Wispy effects and emerging atmospheres smoothly segue into the main break, shifting the narrative further into esoteric territory. Sitting comfortably in an ethereal yet thought provoking space, the lead motif rises amidst a rush of drums as the beats drop for a heady finale. The second selection 'Fiend' follows suit with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Once again, a darker undertone runs through the piece, while a menacing low end, growling synths and steam-like sweeps create a foreboding air. An effervescent arp begins to bubble as the first act evolves, trailing into the break and elevating tension, before a rush of drums sparks a powerful drop. Rounding out the release in style is the title selection 'Blue' which finds Alex showcasing his remarkable combination of rhythm and groove once again. Spacious and energetic, it's a creation built around rolling bass tones and haunting atmospheres. Harmonic phrases and otherworldly effects converge as the first act unfolds, while ghostly overlays shift energy into the break. Surreal and tense in equal measure, timely modulation adds drama across the one-minute interlude, ultimately reaching a swirling crescendo as the beats fade to prominence, perfectly setting up a striking final movement. A powerful creation from Alex, capping off an inspired Movement Recordings debut for the rapidly rising Dutch artist.

To those unfamiliar with Kiwi here’s a quick intro. He’s the mind behind Crossbreed, the talked-about label and party series coming out of London. His early music endeavors saw him release on coveted labels like Disco Halal, Days Of Being Wild, Deep Shit, Optimo, Mood Black, Correspondent and we cannot forget the massively massive single “Orca” released on Futureboogie in 2017. He’s now ready to share the fruits of his lockdown with this debut for Kompakt.

We ring in with the title track ”Hello Echo” featuring Bestley on vocals. Simply put, THIS is that disco-fied feel good single that is as essential as every hot day requires a cold drink in hand. Sexy and bold, “Down with the Rhythm” an immaculate bass line and a vocal that would make Dave Gahan proud. “Acqua Panna” is a favourite for us here. A crazed breakbeat mingles with a lost piano and synth that seems to jam on nowhere but somewhere that we find is very dear to the dance floor.
