I don't think too many people know that my most favourite genre of house is actually deep house.  This is dedicated to a good mate, who I know has a very similar history in clubs, and taste in music.  A thank you for inspiring me continually.  I hope you like it mate x.

Given most people remember Kinky Malinki as a 'funky house night' for the first 5 years we held parties at venues with 3 rooms, and we generally had funky/vocal. classics and Progressive house.  Originally I played in the harder room, as that was what I'd loved since buying house music in 1987. 

in fact 'Emotion Electric' by A Guy Called Gerald is either my second or third favourite house track of all time. it was an early warehouse tune in 88/89.

The first club we did where we had to change policy was Pacha which had two rooms, with the main room probably around 60% of the clubs capacity (which we have no idea about as back in those days they'd squeeze 1300 in which was clearly over it's capacity).

When we started Pacha it became a more disco/funky driven policy.  And don't get me wrong, I love disco house, but if I started to copy them, I'd be a poor impression.  Instead I played a little bit differently. A little deeper, a little tougher, some outright quirky tracks (that became Anthems) such as Tom Middletons Remix of Kerri Chandler ' Bar-a-Thym'.  It had an immense break, and the sound guy always knew to push the glitter cannon on my loud 'noooowwww'.  I played the Cure and the Cause, the Dennis Ferrer mix by Fish Go Deep, and I also played Quentin Harris 'Let's be Young'.  Deep house doesn't have to be dull or boring.  I like the tracks that still have those hands in the air breaks, or vocals, or are groovy.

I actually remember the first night I decided I'd play Quentin's track.  I wasn't sure how it would fit in, as it was quite deep and different.  I love those meldodic, repetetive tracks, as they remind me of old school and warehouse tracks in 91/92, where you's get lost in the track.  But I was on after a pretty funky set, and I had to build up to something that might have killed the crowd.  It was about 3am and I knew everyone would be in 'party mode'.  I played it and it was brilliant. The track has this stab which is simply haunting on a system as good as Pacha's.  It made every hair on my body stand to attention.  After that I played it for many months and it was defintely a Kinky Anthem, alongside some of the disco favourites.  

So Deep house reminds of of the bygone eras.  It's more orignal and samples less.  It's more creative in that some of the sounds take your brain in outer space, like the house music did of 1990 and 1991 (albeit it's a quicker tempo).  I think the best and most creative producers sit in the deep house arena.  I also like it best to listen to when I want to transport my mid somewhere else.  I don't want to listen to music that makes me want to dance and throw shapes.  I want to listen to music where my mind has drifted and usually I find myself immersed ithin the music and then my minds drifts aroud, but in the moment and I've stopped thinking about the thing grating me that's on my mind.  No other music can do that to me, except for Deep House music.

I would absolutely love to play a set like this in a club that plays deep house.  I only ever played a few.  To do an entire set is on my bucket list.

This mix very much reminds me of when I played progressive house at Labrynth in 1993'.  I think Deep house is effectively the same thing as progressive house was when it blew up and became the music of choice for almost every DJ in that era. I'm hoping my old Labrynth buddy Pmac feels the same.
