When I think of transit, it’s the complex arrangement of people in motion of every nationality, gender, age immersed in their thoughts looking beyond the horizon to what new revelations their destinations will bring. 

These book spine collages which I call as a series, Spine Collectives (imagined as an musical configuration, quartet, octet, etc) are arrangements of poetic phrases held together captured in the moment as a flower arrangement or a tea ceremony may be carried through.

The inspiration for these spine collages came from the buddhist tradition of writing short vertical poem cards from the Heian period, “tanzaku,” on which a single line of poetry was handwritten to record the time of day—the moment.
For the LAX terminal project, under curator Koan Jeff Baysa’s theme “Wild Blue Yonder,” I have selected books which carry references to a particular tint, shade or meaning of the color, blue.
