Each year, we ask a few artists from our Dekmantel Selectors line-up to deliver a mix in anticipation of the new edition. First up in this year’s series is Garage Noord resident and LYL radio show host @merelrhizoom. As a proper connoisseur of modular synth tracks and avant-garde compositions, merel rhizoom tends to navigate the musical stratosphere between what one could refer to as “weird psybient”, hypnotic jungle, trance downtempo or industrial breaks with implausible ease in her selections.

The mix at hand makes a good case for doing what feels right: merel rhizoom told us that she “initially was very tempted to make a more dance-oriented mix”, but then decided to go into a different direction: “focussing on (modular) synthesis of veterans such as Max Loderbauer, Robert Aiki Low, Andreas Tilliander and Driftmachine, while on the other hand including more avant-garde compositions by Jon Hassell, Oren Ambarchi, Upperground Orchestra and others”. What already sounds good on paper, has turned out to be a mesmerizing and thoroughly mind-altering listening session – enjoy it with your eyes closed and mind open.

We´re closing the month with 2 sets recorded live at Perpendicular Festival last May plus a live performance by Ameeva performed at Espacio Perpendicular the next week.
Every year in a forest  In the centre of Spain there is a private meeting limited to 180 people with the same purpose as Espacio Perpendicular: the pure enjoyment of underground music. The first live act is by STBL, a wonderful journey that explores subtle ambient territories; after him, Paduan, resident dj at Into the universes parties in Amsterdam, and regular one at Balamii radio in London, carries out a well-driven drone and experimental ambient set. The last hour is for a live performance by Ameeva. A delicate and smooth journey with gentle and hidden melodies, field recordings and ASMR voices

Outsiders: Sonic Imaginaries of Latin-Persia w/ Katayoun @ Kiosk Radio 04.02.2024

Katayoun aka discourse is a boundary-pushing and eclectic DJ, selector, and a longtime digger of Iranian music. With a knack for finding rarities, her mixtapes are skilfully curated, blending soothing melodies and funky rhythms with a soulful ability to shape sonically elusive environments that push beyond borders. As a music archivist and activist, Katayoun curates her sound around particular themes, shedding light on underknown genres and overlooked gems in Iranian music history and beyond, including Jazz and Latin rhythms. Being a dancer herself since early childhood, she knows how to move a dancefloor and engage an audience from beginning to end. Her skill and expertise have brought her to different stages, for example at the Melkweg as the support act of Sevdaliza and many other venues and radio communities across the Netherlands and abroad. This show, Jazz and Funk from Iran and Beyond, travels through jazz and funk from the 70s Iran all the way to sounds from Cairo, Ethiopia, and 'Tehrangeles'.

I’d see him outside stuff. It was that awful dubstep era so he wore black Gore-Tex, but I knew that jacket had seen more than dark afters. We met properly and appropriately on a wee island, high as mountains. He stopped me ripping a heater from its correct place after I took offence to the heat it was producing.

Then there was that time in Glasgow, him in pants, cocooned in a duvet, mixing Groovejet into Mac-Talla with one arm. His bike had bucked him aff, and he’d twunted his collar and radius. I’d slept a wretched drunken sofa sleep, emerging from unconsciousness sporadically to the sound of retching or co-codamol fever dream groaning.

Us putting on the boys in a coire, expensive speakers satched by the same sleet settling on his now solidified shoulders. My pal warning me the city boy looked overexposed, me knowing he weathered weather well.

A night in Fort William, a bleak bleary attempt on Curved Ridge turned D Gully Buttress backtrack. Relieved retreating, spouting smut, and a swift dash to Steall meadow to burn off the fidgets.

Taking all that lot to Ben Alder Bothy in the middle of the fucking night, the sound of gutties squelching and boisterous swigging, giving way to hungover mutiny. He lost that black Gore-Tex jacket on the way out. Probably got sidetracked by a stonechat or chit-chat. I was right, that jacket had seen more than dark afters.

Sonic Imaginaries is a show by Katayoun with sounds spanning from soulful Persian Avaz to jazzy tunes, upbeat funk, Latin rhythms, and synth from Iran and beyond. Bringing to the fore a host of underknown gems and narratives by way of musical storytelling, Katayoun’s work has long recontextualized Iranian music from the 60s and 70s from a generic realm of ‘nostalgia’ and oblivion into a specific and sonically dynamic space of universality, temporality, and relationality. This iteration muses on visiting Iran’s Funkytown of the 70s – the cosmopolitan city of Tehran – with tracks by Ramesh, Martik, and Hayedeh.
