The Nose is a whimsical new family musical by Kit Goldstein Grant. After his nose jumps off his face and masquerades around St. Petersburg as a high-ranking official, Kovalyov is sent on a crazy journey to regain his sniffer and his social position.

Based on Nikolai Gogol's famous tale, The Nose entertains with Russian-flavored music, family-friendly humor, and an eye-popping production, while featuring themes and lessons that resonate from Imperial Russia to modern-day America.

NPR podcast Planet Money has announced the development of a new superhero podcast musical based on their upcoming comic book character Micro-Face, a superhero with a variety of audio super powers, to be written by composer/lyricist/librettist Kit Goldstein Grant.  A livestream special podcast of the short musical is planned following the comic book’s release.

Planet Money hosts Kenny Malone and Robert Smith have revived the 1940s superhero Micro-Face, originally created by Allen Ulmer.  In a series of episodes Planet Money has been exploring the public domain and the world of licensing and derivative works, and their own process in creating a new “superhero empire.”  A comic book of their new version of Micro-Face is currently in development, with a story by Alex Segura, cover art by Jerry Ordway, lettering by Taylor Esposito, coloring by Ellie Wright, and, of course, schtick by Planet Money.  The comic book is currently available for presale on NPR’s website at npr.org/micro-face.

The podcast musical will be written by international musical theatre writer Kit Goldstein Grant.  Her previous musicals have been seen in New York City at Off-Broadway at Theatre Row (THE GIANT HOAX), the Master Theater and the Midtown International Theater Festival (THE NOSE), the Strawberry One-Act Festival (THE COMMUTERS), The Players Theatre (WHERE ANGELS FEAR TO TREAD), and Theatre for the New City (THE WRONG BOX), and in South Africa (THE NOSE, Anex Theatre Productions).  Five of her musicals for young audiences have toured schools with the Schenectady Theatre for Children, including IT’S RAINING TAMALES!, which is published by YouthPLAYS.  Kit has studied at Juilliard and the Tony-Award winning BMI Musical Theatre Writing Workshop, and is the founder of arts education program Paper Kite Arts.  www.kitgoldsteingrant.com.

"The Mermaid of Edam"

A children's musical, based on a Dutch folktale.

In the Dutch city of Edam, famed for its industry, cleanliness, and cheese, they have no time for silliness and imagination. The Burgomaster runs a tight operation, and demands strict conformity. His daughter, Katrijn, longs to be a painter, but the Burgomaster insists she spend her time on housekeeping and cheese making instead.

One day there is a storm and a wave washes a mermaid into the town square. The Burgomaster feels it is his duty to keep her on land and train her to be a good housekeeper.

The Mermaid quickly wearies of these tasks, and determines to return to the sea.  To get there she helps Katrijn to teach the Burgomaster a lesson about the importance of dirt.

In 1869, an immense controversy arises when a giant stone figure is discovered on a small farm in Cardiff, NY. One young girl, Emily, is so drawn by the idea of seeing a genuine giant that she runs away from home to visit the Giant's travelling exhibition. Once there, she is offered a job as an apprentice.

The unscrupulous circus impresario P.T. Barnum is determined to make the Cardiff Giant his own. First, he tries to buy it from its owner, Newell. Then he schemes to create a new sculpture, claiming that his is the authentic Cardiff Giant. When Newell and Barnum go head to head, imagination and reality blur as Emily faces some difficult decisions about what to say and whom to trust.

Androcles is a slave who finds a chance to escape and ends up in the desert. There he comes across a lion who he is certain is about to eat him. However, the lion merely holds out his paw, whimpering with a thorn stuck in the paw. Androcles removes the thorn and binds up the paw. Some time later the lion repays the favor - proving that gratitude is the sign of a noble soul.

This new telling of the familiar story weaves in the tale of Androcles' sister, Adelpha, who also escapes from slavery and goes in search of her brother. When she comes across the desert cave where Androcles and the lion reside, disguises, trickery and complications ensue!

"String Itch"
For String Orchestra

Program Note:
The title "String Itch" started out as a typo, when I was attempting to type "String Orch" as a temporary title for a string orchestra piece that was not yet conceived.  I quickly realized that I actually liked the title "String Itch," so I wound up composing the piece around the title rather than the other way around!  The first two movements contain a chordal ostinato of an itch that cannot be scratched. In the third movement, the itch gets scratched, and it's quite a relief!
