obviously we love a costume party cause it's cool to be someone else for a minute. plus wearing a disguise is liberating & fun. but there are times when the masks we wear aren't necessarily by choice. when we aren't seen, or aren't allowed to be authentic, inhabiting your second self can feel more like a burden. this episode is about both of those experiences -- the alter egos we choose and the ones imposed upon us.

Episode #2: Who's Your Alter Ego?

"A man on the road is solitary," the writer Vanessa Veselka said. "A woman on the road is just alone." Veselka thumbed rides for three years as a teenager & never once saw another girl hitching. We've got wanderlust too, and we don't need company. But like Veselka, we could think of a lot of stories about men on the road alone and not so many tales about women traveling solo. (If there's one thing this patriarchal society hates, it's a woman with agency doing whatever the F she wants.) So we hitchhiked to Vegas in protest of that tradition. WE OUT HERE.

A Woman On the Road Is Alone

MALE FANTASIES, MALE FANTASIES is everything run by male fantasies? If you believe Margaret Atwood the male gaze is inescapable. If a man isn’t looking at you (but tbh when is he not?) then you are your own voyeur, always seeing yourself as male culture (“entertainment”) has taught you to -- whether you know it or not.

“Protagonism is propaganda that protects and perpetuates privilege,” Jill Soloway announced at TIFF this fall. Gina Young put it another way: “The people with all the power control the stories that get told.” And the stories they’re telling are often narratives that reduce women to objects and false dichotomies, narratives that are designed to teach us how to behave, how to be in service of a male agenda, how to be. 

This episode is about taking control of the ways we’re seen -- the ways we’re looked at, in what context, on whose terms, and for what purposes. This episode is about two women and two ideas in conversation: What would media look like if we told our own stories? And how could those stories give us permission to really be ourselves? THE FEMALE GAZE is how we see the world, ourselves, & each other. 

In this episode WE DISSECT DIRECTOR JILL SOLOWAY’S MASTER CLASS: Jill Soloway perfectly articulates our rage, suggestions for what cis-males should do in the feminist utopia, and why Zack Morris is the epitome of white dude fragility. 

WE VISIT GINA YOUNG’S FEMINIST ACTING CLASS: The tragedies of Hollywood typecasting, queer casting calls and feminist sororities, and how to maintain your sanity when your body is a commodity.

"Desire flows and circulates amongst places of employment, intellectual debates, political organizing, artistic circles, playgrounds, and cemeteries.” 

Post-couple form, we began to look elsewhere for connection. In this episode we’re guided by our burning questions: Can touching your friends be sensual, without being sexual? Can friendships be fluid — romantic one day, and not the next? What is the boundary between friendship and romance? Is there a boundary at all?
