For the next edition of the selector series we have invited @garagedisco from Brazil. They are a collective from São Paulo who started off throwing parties in Marlon's garage in 2018 and spreading the good vibes in bars and festivals. Talking to Vini and Gui over the phone about the mix the other day, they told me that all five selected the tracks on a recent trip together, which was then mixed together by Vini and Marlon.  

So what's on the menu today? They have prepared a selection of easy going and irresistibly funky 70's and 80's Brazilian disco and Latin world music, also featuring a recently released edit by Vini. Get your Caipirinha ready, best afternoon vibes coming your way!

Selector Series 08: GARAGE DISCO

Hailing from Montreal, Canada, we are excited to welcome @cornelius_malware for the ninth edition of the selector series. He is part of @discosgraves, a collective and label with a strong audio-visual focus, releasing contemporary electronic music and edits beefing up gems from the past. Cornelius is creator of the label’s own Longboard Cruise edit series, capturing slow life during the hot summer months of coastal Lima. Due to perfect compatibility with the breezy afternoon vibes we curate at KS, we asked him to record a mix to accompany the recent release of the series’ second edition. 

We are glad he accepted - the outcome is a fantastic selection of his personal favourites, taking us on a trip through 80’s funk, boogie, synth-pop and obscure fusions thereof, including previously released and also unreleased material. This set is road trip-approved or alternatively highly recommended for simmering in the tropical sun.

When talking about selection, HMTW take it as far as possible. Their roots started in world music and its many strands, they've now expanded to sounds that are out of this planet. The crew is run by Gabriel Badwan and Fernando Tortelli, in their mixes you can be ready to find anything from downtempo Balearic vibes to Left-field House and more. The quarantine has brought us a clear picture that we can’t live without art. Whatever is the form, the current moment of self isolation makes us look for different ways of synesthetic perceptions to find a way to move on.

And to remember the life we ​​love, we invited a great music researcher to the fourth edition that delights us with 50 minutes of pleasure to our senses: Priscilla Cavalcante, also known by the name House of Pris.

Priscilla Cavalcante was born in Fortaleza and was the first DJ and composer of electronic music from the state of Ceará. She lived 20 years in Amsterdam before moving to Miami 4 years ago and from where she commands the renowned record store and label Concreta Sala (@concretasala).

Priscilla started playing in 1993 in the suburb of Fortaleza (Agito Jovem, Turma do Circuito). She has been a music researcher for 25 years and is a pioneer in the commercialization of vinyl records inside and outside Brazil. Moreover, she is a reference in the research and dissemination of Brazilian Bass to other countries through the sale of records and sets for different radio stations such as Rinse, NTS, The Lot Radio and Dublab, among others. She identifies herself as a woman, of Northeastern culture, mother of Mariah and Cayo, addicted to music digging, tapioca, sea bathing and cafuné (brazilian term for get your head scratched).

“Following the International Women's Day celebrations, I decided to make a "Yin Yang" mix, which represents the balance between women and men. I started with some Rap, where the male voice is predominant, passing by the Charm in a hurry to be able to reach the final destination right away: Freestyle - one of my favorite styles, both to listen and to dance. It is also known worldwide as Electro Dance and in Brazil as Funk Melody. In the Freestyle, the female vocal, mainly dominated by latinas, and the drama in the lyrics, which are almost always about love, are predominant. How not to love this combination? :) I hope you like it, the tracks have been chosen with esteem.”
