Some info about my mixing for people interested in this stuff:

MIX

I did some basic levelling of the big track count.
Also I tried to do some panning.
I panned the piano (but not fully) to the left and some synths 'against' each other (So to say, if one track is 20 L than the other is 20 R.) and the tuba-track more to the right and the horns more to the left.
The lead vocals where kept in the center and the backing vocals fullly to the rights and lefts.

I routed the drums.
A highpass-filter on most of the tracks except for the smaller ones.
The highpass on the piano was automated so that it isn't active in the intro.
I went far enough on the bass with the highpass so I could preserve the lowest bass for the kick drum.
On some tracks also a lowpass.
E.Q. on the drums.
Also I mixed slightly overcompressed parallel drums in with the other drums.
A second bass track with a distortion on to make it more prominent (on smaller speakers) and distortion on the first two kick drums on doubled tracks.
I even went so far and doubled the first kick drum another time but I made this track a little more resonant to emphasize the (sub)bassiness. (My CPU wasn't that happy.)
Some more drastic E.Q. on the lead vocals.
I found that there was sibilance to get worked out a bit and some 'honkyiness'.
Compression on the drums.
Now I'm finding out I didn't compress the bass.
However, the bass already looked quite compressed enough as a raw track.
As some fun effect I put a filter on a synth-track and automated that so it drew the attention to itself and away from the vocals for a short amount of time. (And I was just feeling a little creative.)
I also automated the highpass filter on one of the lead vocals to give some kind of 'getting higher' effect to finally end up 'kicking' in your face with more bass in his voice.
I also automated some 'dirty' and bad lead words.

MASTERING

E.Q. of course,
again a highpass and a lowpass.
Got rid of some mud and still existing honkyness...
With multiband compression I made the high frequencies more prominent and compressed the bass to make it a little more 'cohesive'.
A 'boost' for some slight saturation and loudness.
I used only around 2 (Which I quess is in dB.)
I kept the bassband untouched but I widened the mids slightly and brought the highs a little more to the center and the 'upfront' with stereo processing.
Then finally a limiter to make it slightly louder with the 'limit' (ceiling) at -0,2 dB and the release at 18,89 ms.

headless 4 string bass with a 'DB'-tuner, a mechanism that can easily downtune the low E string. I love this bass. I had to wait more than 7 months for it to arrive! And it's my first one, I hope my only/primarily one, that means I have only been playing bass for about a two weeks when I recorded this track. There was no editing. (Yeah there was E.Q. and stuff but I mean I didn't comp the basstrack or something.) It is totally improvised and recorded on two tracks. + I added an extra harmonic/distorted one aswell to make the bass really upfront, even on your little laptopspeaker. ;)

What I did:
MIX

Kick, snare, bass, room, overheads, tom2 and vocals centered.
Tom1 and 3 panned in opposite to each other.
Clean rythm guitar to the right and whirly to the left. (also not fully)
Distorted guitar slightly to the left.
Lead guitars panned like their names. (Fully to the left and right.)

E.Q. on all the tracks, it aren't that much.
I brought the kick drum out more in the presence range and boosted it around 66Hz.
I got rid of a lot of (lower) midrange honky - and boxyness.
The snare drum was kept pretty basic at the E.Q.,
some cuts and a little boost at the higher end.
The three toms where E.Q.-ed quite similiar.
A boost at the lower and higher end and a big, long cut (or a low Q) in the midrange.
I also sometimes cut out the 66Hz range where the kick belongs.
Further just a lot of basic E.Q. on the other tracks and high-passes on all tracks.
Compression on most of the tracks.
Harder compression on the vocal to make it more upfront and bring out the softer pieces.
I made an extra basstrack where I put an (harmonic) exciter and a basic amp-plugin on to bring out the harmonics so the bass is a little clearer on smaller speakers.
Further some 'enhancements' like a reverb on the second tom track. (Reverb on toms can sound really nice in my opinion.)
A reverb on the clean guitar, a chorus on the two lead guitar tracks (not to heavy to keep the original tone and feel) and delay on the lead vocals.
Also a chorus on the whirly to make it even bigger/wider because it is quite important/prominent in the mix.

MASTER

Basic E.Q.,
high-pass,
low-pass around 17kHz.
A slight boost in the 60-125 Hz range.
A cut around 180Hz and in the muddy-range around 250Hz,
around 500Hz, 850-1000Hz, 2.1 kHz, 5.5 kHz and around 7 kHz.
Some boost in the presence range around 3kHz,
around 6kHz and a high shelf at 7.8kHz.

Multi-band-compression, quite heavy (high ratio) in the higher frequency range and harder (knee) at the lower band.
Fast attack and slow release in the midrange - and higher band.

A simple limiter to prevent it from clipping.

This is a track that I recorded saturday of this weekend (28 february) with my phone beside the road somewhere where there are a couple of (big) fishing ponds close to where I live.
At the start of the track you can hear a cyclist for example and aswell a car I believe but besides that there is only wind and some static noise.

The reverb is Harrison GVerb.

This is an excerpt of something longer (about 12 minutes) that I recorded in the garden of someone.
I am left with only the first five minutes of the recording (and it were the pieces that came after that I found to sound the best!) because the file for some reason got corrupt.
The water was recorded seperately (there was some water noise on the other recording but having another track made it easier to manipulate it more 'ambiently').

I am playing two shakuhachi, both made out of PVC, one is 0.9 shaku and the other 1.8 (standard).
The 1.8 is bought and the 0.9 I made myself a longer time ago.
I also used another mouthpiece which fits on most shakuhachi bores for another tonality, it makes it sound a little more like a native american flute,
but most of the sounds are plain shakuhachi with an utaguchi blowing edge as I like it. ;)

It has been about half a year now - I started somewhere in the middle of october as far as I can remember - that I have been playing shakuhachi.

This is something I recorded outside in the garden with my new 1.8 root-end bamboo shakuhachi (D minor - pentatonic).
It is made out of 'Phyllostachys aurea' ('golden bamboo') rather then Phyllostachys bambusoides ('madaké') so it is less vulnerable against parasites and cracking, and cheaper I guess. :)
I recorded this on the day that I received it so there is still a lot to master.

New Bamboo Shakuhachi 尺八 - ニーウ始まる(nīu hajimaru)

This is a cover that I'm working on.
This is only the arranged recording, it is not mixed yet so it still sounds terribly 'off' and everything (all the instruments) is still fighting over the sonic spectrum.
See it as some kind of 'preview' as I try to save the project.
Maybe I will come up with a mixed (and mastered) version later or maybe the project is really lost - like some other ones I have lost, it really sucks as I usually put tons of hours in these and then losing such a precious work is very depressing -.

But for now I let it rest as I really get nervous because of the fact that I have a problem with my hardrive and so cannot work further on it.

1.8 bamboo Shakuhachi - Sound Effect/Sample

This is the shakuhachi honkyoku: Choshi or Hon Shirabe played on my bamboo 1.8 shakuhachi.
I recorded the track with the builtin mics of my laptop so the sound quality isn't super.
The reverb is natural, not added afterwards although that was some little EQing/tape saturation done afterwards.

I've been playing for a little over a year now.

Pokémon Route 104 (ruby/sapphire/emerald) theme song, remixed

This is a cover of the Pokémon GO tune which plays when you're searching for pokémon, gyms, pokéstops, etc., played on my 1.8 shakuhachi.
Buddhist honkyoku are the pieces which were specifically written for this Japanese flute - shakuhachi - and were usually played by zen monks for several purposes like alms but mostly for meditation. I played this cover in such a way that it both has some recognisable melodies as well as some meditativeness around it.

I had quite some problems with making this single instrument track as my first takes weren't the way I liked it;
 when I did play it in a way I liked enough, I noticed that there were clicks/pops in my audio, I'm guessing the buffer size but I didn't found it out yet so I just lived with it and combined the track which was recorded through my microphone with the track I got from my phone and the audio file of the video file!
This way I could get around the glitches (pops and clicks) a little but then when I tried to use my convolution plugin I had EVEN MORE unwanted audio artifacts happening through my AU host plugin! I found a way to get around it as well by lowering the volume, a lot, but then I had to increase the loudness in my other music program...
The quality may not be superb at all when you're reading this but in the end it still ended to sound the way I kind of was going for!

This is the national anthem of Belgium played on shakuhachi (a Japanese flute) and bass guitar.

° At the end, the melody isn't completely like the original, it took me a couple of takes before I got a decent one, so at the end there is a little (kind of failed) improvisation. I learned this melody on the same day I recorded it so there were some flaws. I had one splendid take and when I checked I realised I wasn't recording! That is probably something that is recognisable... :p

° The bass guitar backing part, was kind of made up on the spot.


I'm not a patriot by the way. Not at all, I just like the anthem, but I don't like my country. :D 
It's overcrowded here, almost no nature left at all, no views (except for some places in the south of the country) -> buildings and houses after buildings and houses -> everything flat, no beautiful mountains or anything ...,
we have 6 governments
- who do jack sh*t, one period we once had no goverment for +500 days and nobody even noticed!! -
the worst (and dangerous) traffic in the world, bad air quality (due to overpopulation probably), immigration problematics,
everything gets divided more each day, people on the street are sour and self-
 centered(When I say 'hello' or 'good day' people give me a look like I killed somebody, lol. Of course not everyone, but most of our people are.)
, our taxes are enormously high, the climate is silly (either it's moist and chilly or moist and too hot in summer, with tons and tons of rain of course, every f*cking season, the sun; what's that?), no medical cannabis yet ...

What's a pro thing about my country? The health- and social system probably... 
Not being prosecuted for being non-religious.
And of course way less crime as say the USA.

I was just playing/practicing random phrases and notes while recording, the aim was to just show some of the loudest/softest, smoothest/shrillest sounds. 'Enjoy'

I randomly show some of the crazy ninja/samuraiesque dynamics of the shakuhachi (Japanese flute)

I thought about recording my 'progress' on this honkyoku (name for certain traditional pieces), that I hadn't played in a while actually, but when I checked and listened back to the recording after playing I noticed some strange things.
This is not altered in any way. (except for trimming the very beginning and endings and such)

I don't know what exactly went wrong but it's art in its own, haha.

Although I prefered the more reverby snare drum (that 80's gated reverbtesk-likeness) in the first mixture, this one is more balanced to be honest.

Seven Nation Army Cover (drum and guitar with solo)

Hey,
I'm participating for the big collaboration where CSGuitar89 (check him out, he makes great covers! http://www.youtube.com/user/CSGuitar89 ) is doing a gigantic collaboration.
This is the track I have recorded, it's just recorded (so no editing,mixing and no mastering, just the thing that's been recorded straight into my D.A.W. . That's maybe why it MAY sound thinny, harsh, dull, not loud enough, as doggy poop, ect. )
I just couldn't resist to already upload my video part (I don't even know if I am actually getting in the final mix/collab.) because I haven't uploaded something in 'decades'.
The reason why I haven't uploaded in such a long time is because I am still working (since around 20 december) on one cover.
I just really want to finish it but still make it sound like 'nice doggy poop' if you know what I'm trying to say.
Now at the moment it's still quite a pretty 'muddy' mix.
But it's my hobby (I even got my first pair of studio monitors, watch the blue light in the background!) , I work on it. (on my own slow tempo XD )

It was my intention to add some lead parts but I had a lot of technical difficulties, maybe I'll add some stuff and actually turn it into something more resembling a song.

I got the tracks from here http://www.cambridge-mt.com/ms-mtk.htm .
It was a six track recording. (inside kick drum, another kick drum track, a snare drum, overheads, (double or upright) bass and a piano track)
All the recording rights go tho The Jesper Buhl Trio and Mike Senior.

Firstly,
I didn't pan anything, I tried by ways of E.Q. to give every instrument in the song its place.
I like the dynamics (especialy in Jazz, which was quite new for me tough) although I spend a pretty decent amount of time putting automations (fades) to get away of the clipping in the more heavy drum parts.
E.Q. I used on all the tracks,
I like to use a high shelf to preserve a lot of the bass frequencies for the actual (double) bass.
I almost used no compression (except for example for the bass to make it a little tougher, fatter and more prominent in the mix) because I wanted to keep the dynamics.
And I used a little reverb on some tracks like the overheads and the piano (I think) to get a more roomy feeling.

During mastering I again used a high shelf to get away of the really sub-bass (which in Jazz I think aren't important, this is not heavy dubstep or something).
I tried to get a little bit more 'shimmering' by boosting (about 1dB) in the more high end around 9kHz.
And a low shelf around 16kHz to get away of the unneeded almost not hearable high frequencies.
Also I boosted the low midrange around 130 Hz a bit to make the double bass more prominent on less bassy or 'woofy' speakers.
A thing I also did was using a tape saturator to make it a little fatter (about around 1,5 dB).
I didn't use a compressor or multi-band compressor during mastering because I wanted to preserve the dynamics in this song.
To make the song even more stereo or 'surround' I used a stereo widener. (not to heavely but still pretty hearable and helpfull)
Finally I used a limiter.

MIXING
I panned the kick 17 to the left and the snare drum 17 to the right.
The acoustic guitar 69 to the left, the fiddle 36 to the right and the piano 36 to the left. 
I E.Q.-ed everything but I didn't compress everything.
I used a buss compression (I only used the Classic Compressor in this mix by the way.) for the drums (so the first 4 tracks) because in my first mix and first two masters the drums sounded not thight and together (it's like the kick is on 100BPM while the cymbals are on 214BPM or something Smile ).
I also used a compressor on the bass to make it a lot tighter, I love bass
and 'tough' basses.
On acoustic guitar to make it a little louder in the mix without having to distort it or something.
And also one on the vocals to make it stand out a little more,
the vocalist is in my opinion a woman that knows what she is doing and not someone insecure or something.
Reverb only on the dobro because I like the resonance going through a hall or something like that.
Probably this was a big mistake in my first mix,
I am starting to get a little bit handier in reverb (step by step). (I also love the Classic Reverb, it's a little easier to use in my opinion than the Ambience one I used more prominently before.)
Again a delay (guess, guess, ... Classic Delay), I wanted to keep the 'background vocal' coming at you from the right.
And finally a chorus effect (Classic Chorus!) because the electric guitar really fits with that.
When I got the idea of using an 'effect' (no E.Q., compression, ect.) on the electric guitar I was like: 'Yeah, that would sound awesome.'

MASTERING
For mastering I tried to not overdo stuff.
I used a low and high pass, cut some and boosted some. (like around 120Hz, I love that lower 'bassy' region, it's usually the place where earphone speakers start to jump in, so the bass gets a lot clearer (for my ears Angel) on 'smaller' sytems.
No multi-band, only a 'single-band' compressor to make the mix a little thighter and make it sit together a little more.
A saturator (around 0,7 dB), I got used to using it.
A stereo-expander, I tried to hold myself and not overdo it, referenced on both my monitors and headphones to be a little more sure.
Of course a limiter on the end. (I don't know if I am doing it right although, but it doesn't clip after I E.Q.-ed and saturated it and stuff so that's good.)

PANNING
Hi-hat: center, kick drum: 16L, overhead left: 100L, overhead right: 100R, ride: center, snare bottom and top: 16R, first two toms: center, 3th:29L and 4th:29R, drum room: center, all bass tracks: center, guitar1: 49L, guitar2: 100L, guitar3: 49R, guitar4: 100R and both two vocal tracks: 16L

MIXING
I routed all the drum tracks to one buss.
I also E.Q.-ed all tracks seperatly + the drum buss.
I also tried parallell compression for the first time by duplicating the drum buss (Actually I send the drum buss to that track.) and kind of overcompressing that track so when I mix it slightly in with the drums I still have a pumping drum sound without losing all dynamics. (That is parallell compression I hope.)
I compressed the tom tracks because I wanted them to cut through the mix a little more and I also reverbed them. (That are the only tracks I 'reverbed'.)
The bass tracks I E.Q.-ed and compressed to make them tight and punchy. (The way I kinda like bass.)
E.Q. on the guitars to make their mids shine. Wink
Lots of E.Q., some compression and a slight delay on the vocals. (I didn't try to overdo it this time, in my last mix the delay was to hard I suppose.)
The second vocal track (So ruuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuun!!) I E.Q.-ed, compressed and I used a chorus effect to create more like a chorus of men rather than one guy screaming (Like the name 'chorus' says. :) )

MASTERING
E.Q.-ed some sub-bass out and unnecessary high's.
Multi-band compression (three band) to make glew the song a bit and to compress the higher frequency's some more. (In my mix the cymbals and stuff where a little to much over the place, I think.)
A stereo-expander, not to heavely, just to make it a LITTLE wider and clearer and because I somehow love it.
A reverb (!!) and I am not sad I did it.
It's because of the reverb you sometimes here some noise but I kind of like it, it adds something to the song.
It also helps make the vocals in my opinion a little bit clearer.
A limiter to make it louder and prevent from clipping by making it louder, +5,2 gain and the treshold at 0,2 .(Where mixing harder music here, here are dynamics a little less important than like classic music for example.)

First, please don't bother yourself about the fact that I sometimes UNCONSCIOUSLY act a little strange in the video, it's about the music not the video. XD
I am glad that I finished this cover. :)
I know I am not the best singer...
But I did my best and I spent a couple of hours editing the vocals. (And an autopitch plugin, not the 'real' AutoTune, that is way to expensive.  :) )
I actually even had to put 3 layers of clothing over my mic to be sure that there weren't to much 'airy' and 'spitty' sounds getting along.
Somehow my mic only picks stuff up that is really close to it maybe that's because of the polar pattern of my mic.
Or maybe that's because I don't have a preamp so I need to amplify the weak signal that comes out of my mic virtually. (So in my computer.)
Most interfaces have a preamp but mine doesn't... :(
I kind of really like this song. (Maybe that's because we all played GTA vice city somewhere in our lives. I love new wave music by the way. :D)
Further a lot of mixing and for mastering I learned to use a new plugin (at least it's new for me.), an harmonic exciter.
With that thing I can make certain frequency's clearer without actually having to boost that frequency. (An harmonic exciter actually creates harmonics.)
That is really nice because that way I can make my bass a lot clearer on smaller speakers like laptop speakers or earphones and stuff.
I do realize that the bass is kind of loud on headphones, but on most systems that I tried it sounds good (to my ears).
