The Assignment: Make some snail-paced beats.
Option 1: Record some 10BPM techno.

For this weeks project I chose option 1. 
I used Logic Pro (it goes all the way down to 5BPM), two instances of SonicVibes Microtonic, time stretched samples and various synth plugins. Trying to make something this slow was interesting, the space between things is more apparent and made the sound selection more important, the space needed "space". Its only 16 bars long but runs for just over 7 minutes.... It's quite the dirge, with a few moments that reminded me of a certain soundtrack.....

APOB - 10BPM (A Clockwork Lozenge) [disquiet0541]

For the Disquiet Junto this week, I chose the option to "Record what you imagine it would sound like to attend a club event of 10BPM techno, including crowd noise."

I wrote a sequence at a normal-ish techno tempo, then slowed down the master tempo in my DAW to 10bpm. Techno typically evolves slowly, in blocks of 16 or so bars, and while I didn't quite stick to that, I thought it wouldn't feel really like it was 10bpm if I messed with the structure. So I decided to focus my efforts on making it sound at least a bit like being in a club.

I mixed the music with a couple of crowd / bar noise recordings from freesound.

I faded the thing in and out, to give a bit more of a feeling of just a captured recording of a club night. I don't think the result is convincing, but it was fun to do.

Jet Jaguar - Slow Night [disquiet0541]

A common trope among social media posts are videos with enticing clickbait titles, such as: “Homeless Person Sits Down At Piano, Then THIS Happened.” The reveal is that the figure at the public piano is actually a professional musician. These scenes typically take place at a shopping mall, where an impromptu audience is delighted by the player’s unexpected dexterity.

Franco Bifo Berardi reminds us that “The goal of the [analyst] is to give him/her the possibility to see other landscapes, and to change the focus, to open some new ways of imagination.” One might imagine the reaction at Carnegie Hall if a virtuoso flubbed a performance so badly that it bordered on an Andy Kaufman skit.

This is why Suss Müsik cannot fathom a dance club scenario in which techno music plays at 10BPM. It’s not impossible, however, for such an event to occur in a setting such as a shopping mall. And rather than a DJ playing electronic techno music, it might be a very strange string quartet attempting to fit their odd time signatures within that 10BPM timestamp. 

This is the approach Suss Müsik took with this week’s project. A series of four cyclical phrases were played on fake violin, fake cello, fake harp and fake dulcimer. A single strike of a mallet keeps time in 10BPM; meanwhile, the instruments are bowed and plucked in 1/64 and 1/128 to give a sense of movement. The constant repetition is perhaps a nod to techno’s reliance on looped beats. 

All of this happens in front of a bewildered audience of mall shoppers (courtesy of public domain audio), who would just as soon be left alone in the food court without this distraction. Then again, as Violet Trefusis once wrote, perhaps it’s true that “love thrives on indifference” and some appreciation would be detected. Maybe we’ll try it one day.

The piece is titled Trefusis. The image may or may not be a shopping center somewhere in the US.

The Assignment: Make some snail-paced beats.

When I saw the mail for Disquiet Junto Project 0541, I also saw a mail from Samplescience, announcing free 303 Loops. As I am no techno musician, I thought of being lazy and just used some of these 303 loops to play around. Strechted from 120 to 10 bpm within reaper they became very melodious and ambientic. I added some percussion and a kickdrum to fullfill what I think are minimum genre conventions (there was a "riser" sound which I left out). This may not be techno at all, but I like the bleeping 303s and the resulting track very much. A nice project!

This is an asynchronous collaboration between three musician, each recorded one week apart. Through The Woods Not Alone [disquiet0317] - encym, Nate Trier & Benn DeMole

This is my contribution to the Disquiet Junto project 0317: Triadic Awareness. This was the third part of a three part piece, where the project was to take the cumulative efforts of another two junto members and add some sounds on top of that.

I choose Lionel Benancie's contribution to last week's Disquiet 0316; which it itself included Disquiet's 0315.

Clearly it's important here to treat the source material sensitively and bring one's best chops to the table; so rather than do that I took my bass guitar out of its dusty case and improvised over the top, and took my best single take.

I then added a bit of interest by doubling the bass part through mutable rings on the modular.

January 26th 2018 Disquiet0317

Took this track as a source for this work:

I wanted to add a repetitive, hypnotic component to APOB’s already oneiric track.

First I slowed it down a bit, changing pitch at the same time, from Bmaj to Amaj.
Created a 4 bar loop out of it.
Then made a second track an octave lower.
I recorded an Epiphone electric guitar through several pedals (loop and pitch shift delay ) to create a real time performance  in 3 tracks.
Then I just edited and mixed in and out those 6 tracks and that’s it.
Thanks APOB for such an inspiring track.

Insomnus Repetitio (disquiet0351) with APOB

This is a solo piano performance by DD.

This track comes from an unreleased series I created a while ago titled Auto-Counterpoint where a single melody superimposed itself by the use of very long delays w/ infinite decay and Revox tape machines.

So I wrote a melody with some variations (melodic changes, permutations, octave shifts, rhythmic changes)  played the whole thing a couple of times feeding 4 or 5 delay or revox lines that recorded to additional tracks.
In the end I’ve got a 10 minute mess of 5 tracks with the same measures repeated over themselves, a pandemonium of repetitions and superimpositions.

Then I made edits, creative use of the delete button and got a reasonable track.

As with the other auto-counterpoint pieces, I performed this in 10 minutes, and edit took several days to finish....

I used photoshop to convert the image to B/W and used markers to create the notation. I then input each color into Muse Score as it's own instrument and would use the Yellow squares as Drums since it reminded me of the Yellow Roli Bongo, exported MIDI to combine with the Roli set. I played the yellow blocks on a 4 bongo from roli in 3 instances since the notation contained 3 instruments.  MUse score file on lines disscussion. Disquiet Junto Project 0353: Warp & Weft
The Assignment: Read loom-woven fabric as a musical composition.

Thanks to Kim Rueger for proposing this project, to John Horigan for allowing us to use this fabric as our source image, and to Mark Lentczner for the photography and for participating in this project’s gestation.

Step 1: Download the following image and look at it closely:

Step 2: If you’re not familiarize with the terms “warp” and “weft,” understand them as relating to the act of weaving. Per the Wikipedia entry, “The lengthwise or longitudinal warp yarns are held stationary in tension on a frame or loom while the transverse weft (sometimes woof) is drawn through and inserted over-and-under the warp.”

Step 3: Study the image with this concept of “warp and weft” in mind. Consider how the image can be interpreted as a musical composition.

Step 4: Compose a piece of music that, reflecting your thoughts from steps 1 through 3, reads the image as a music score.

Six More Important Steps When Your Track Is Done:

Step 1: Include “disquiet0353” (no spaces or quotation marks) in the name of your track.

Step 2: If your audio-hosting platform allows for tags, be sure to also include the project tag “disquiet0353” (no spaces or quotation marks). If you’re posting on SoundCloud in particular, this is essential to subsequent location of tracks for the creation a project playlist.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications.
