This is a mashup of “Party Rock Anthem” (2011) by LMFAO with, of all things, “Another Day in Paradise” (1989) by Phil Collins. Both songs were Billboard number one hits in the U.S. – the first for LMFAO, and the last for Mr. Collins - and they represent a genre clash, a clash of decades, a clash of priorities, and a clash of pretty much everything else.

Phil’s song appeared on “…But Seriously,” an album that stood in contrast to his previous release, “No Jacket Required” (1985), which leaned toward upbeat dance numbers and was considered in some circles to be an artistic throwaway despite its enormous sales. Critics were particularly hard on “Another Day in Paradise,” apparently vexed by Collins’ stance as a finger-wagging multi-millionaire pop star. It’s a mawkish, preachy song, but Collins was sincere; according to Gigwise magazine, he raised funds for homeless charities at his concerts and matched all donations from his own pocket. 

The blended messages of the mashed up “Party Day in Paradise” are awash in contradictions. They remind us that extolling the joys of partying, and the sense of freedom it provides, is a pop music standby that may never run out of steam. On the other hand, writing heavy-handed songs about serious issues is likely to arouse the ire of those who just want to just have a good time.
