Ibibio Sound Machine are set to release their debut LP through Soundway Records. Fronted by British / Nigerian vocalist Eno Williams, they combine elements of West African highlife, disco, post-punk & psychedelic electro soul. Preceded by the pulsating first single 'Let's Dance', ‘Ibibio Sound Machine’ will be released 17th March.

Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's South-Eastern Nigerian Ibibio language form the creative lyrical fabric of the album. A large dose of electronic elements and an approach as influenced by London as much as by West Africa, give the vocals and guitar lines space to breath without being overwhelmed.

From the banging sub-bass of 'Lets Dance' to the spiritual, gospel-tinged notes of the album's opening track 'Voice of the Bird', the band have turned in a dynamic and, at times, beautiful take on modern afro-soul music.

The 8-piece live band made their official live debut at this year's Transmusicales in France and will be a name to look out for in 2014

Up next on Phonica Premieres is a seriously groovy cut from International Soleil Band off the new Soundway 12".  Ta Lassa is an '80s West African Disco crossover from the International Soleil band straight outta Guinea. Composed by Gnamakoron Sidi Diabaté it was originally featured on an album released in 1983 by French Warners offshoot WAM (West African Music) - a short lived label that recorded about 20 releases of West African music released in France. Also Featuring Mory Djely Kouyate this track was a staple of the 22 band's repertoire in the 1970s (in which many of the ISB played) - famous for their recordings on the legendary state-run Editions Syliphone label. We've decided to premiere the extended (DJ friendly) Hide & Smile edit on the A side. There's throbbing bass and keyboard interplay punctuated by classic Guinee guitar lines, metronomic drumming and 80s synth sweeps eventually drops into a more recognisable Guinean vocal outing. Although he hails from the cold winters of Boston, Massachusetts, it’s hard not to hear a sort of authenticity in the Latin and Afro rhythms Bosq crafts in his upcoming release Love and Resistance out on Ubiquity Records. If I had to pinpoint the underlying reason for why this is, I’d say its the producer’s dedication and commitment to the music he is so passionate about.

For Bosq, dabbling in Central and South American beats is less of a trend than it is an actual lifestyle. This is why we believe the American musician has chosen to call Medellin, Colombia his home for the past couple of years. Unlike other Western artists, who have been criticized for not directly collaborating with the far-off cultures they choose to sample, Bosq has decided to do the exact opposite – and this approach shows in basically every tune featured on his latest record.

For example, take the lead track from his LP titled Com Força, which translates to “With Strength” in English. Instead of sampling some classic Brazilian artist like Jorge Ben to create the tune, Bosq resoundingly says, “Fuck that” and makes an original all his own with contemporary Brazilian vocalist Bruno Morais from São Paulo. The result is something that sounds like it comes from the country itself and actually contributes to the rich, flowing canon of Brazilian dance music – not something being cheaply borrowed and re-packaged for Western audiences.

The genuine way in which Bosq incorporates himself and his music explains why Love and Resistance is littered with features that range from the likes of Kaleta and Nicole Willis. Whether it’s making a song that sounds like it’s from Benin or sultry disco that epitomizes American funk, Bosq makes every track off his album exude a tangible “realness” by working with authentic representatives from each genre featured on it – and for that, we at Bolting Bits tip our hats off to him. This is no easy feat and should be viewed as a glorious example of how musicians can embrace other cultures without appropriating.

First official reissue of the extremely rare full-length album by Lagos-based bandleader Shina Williams. Clean copies of the original currently sell for up to £500.

The record was born in 1979 when Shina put Biddy Wright, Fred Fisher, Saliu Alabi, Prince Bola, Tutu Shoronmu, Tunde willimas and several other decorated Nigerian musicians – who played with the likes of Fela Kuti, SJOB Movement, Sonny Okoson, King Bucknor amongst others – together to record. The result is ‘African Dances’, a timeless fusion of afrobeat, electronics, boogie and disco.

Includes his most well-known song, ‘Agboju Logun’ that Williams knew was ground breaking – “I want to show the whole wide world that Africa is alive with modern musicians to reckon with anywhere,”. This album version is a different mix to the two-track 12” that came out under on Earthworks, Rough Trade in 1984.
