This song was written for a weekend songwriting challenge - I got the words 'Alleged Wounds' and this is what I came up with.

Allegedly

His knuckles grew white, holding on tight to the railing
Down to the station, growing impatient with his new leg
The train left without him and he closed his eyes
Then he laughed to himself, and the absurdity of life

When he left for the war he closed the door on a false sense of reality
He was a proud American, self righteous and arrogant, living in the land of plenty
It came like a bird whistling through a foreign sky
He waited for the darkness, But the bomb spared his life

In a bar back home, he felt so alone with his old friends
Foot ball games and rounds of pool, corner pocket solid blue
They didn’t understand, they didn’t understand

Oh, the reporter said allegedly
Five were injured, and death took another three
He looked down at the place, where his leg used to be…allegedly

Everyone’s a hero, until someone needs a hero, No one wants to pay
For haunted minds and phantom limbs, no one wants to rescue him
It’s easier to walk away
When you make a man a number, it’s so hard to see the man
For all the broken and forgotten, is it worth it in the end
