The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

Having burst onto the scene with a string of free downloads and specialist bootlegs, followed by important releases on Nehza records, Over & Out, and Sound Transitions; Bristol-based producer Roaming Data makes his debut on HOMAGE for arguably his most complete work to date. Connecting the ever-blurring dots of bass, house, and electro - still heavily influenced by his native city and the UK's blossoming subcultures.

The success of his previous work has led to support from artists like Ross From Friends, Jaguar, and Roni, while causing chaos across multiple Keep Hush sets and appearances on Radio 1, NTS & Rinse. The latter being a guest mix invite from long-standing resident Miley Serious.

Bubbling beneath the surface of Japan's emerging underground scenes, Osaka-based artist Paperkraft (@pprkrft) has passionately developed his craft, immersing himself in the culture and championing a new wave of Japanese artists. With the rise of genres like UKG & bass in neighboring cities like Kyoto - it's the progressive and house movement Paperkraft is concerned about. Although more niche in his native city, developing a sustainable scene and championing the sounds he loves is the ultimate goal. 

First introduced to HOMAGE through friend and breakthrough producer Stones Taro, Paperkraft referenced releases like Aldonna's (@aldonna) Morph EP as the catalyst to send his demos, and who subsequently remixed 'Ok Corral'. The Melbourne-based producer has since toured frequently both in Europe and in her home country of Australia; continuing to put her stamp on the underground and lending her expertise to remixes for the likes of Benjamin Fröhlich and Rosa Red. 

Inspired by sounds from the 90 - 00's, and essential to the overall essence of his music, Paperkraft blends the old with the new. This duality can be found in the opening track 'The Amazing Spaceman' where liquid drums foam over contemporary sound design. 'Dizzy Disk' kicks things up a notch, holding on to that same old-school-new-school duality with an extra dose of dopamine for good measure. Manchester's Aiden Francis (@aidenfrancis) lends his signature sound to the remix, with elements of breakbeat, trance, and electro, showing why labels and clubgoers rate him so highly. 

Breakthrough tracks' like Papekrafts' 'Dimple' which was released by HearThug's Are You Alien label gathered large support and made a special appearance on Manami's Boiler Room Debut; laying the foundations for tracks like 'Ok Corral' to take shape. The infectious vocal sample coupled with jam-like riffs gives off the vibe that it was done in one take in an act of pure enthusiasm, with that same energy lending itself to the dancefloor. Aldonna's remix adds a Balearic and emotive touch, while 'Stella' rounds off the EP with a left-leaning cut perfect for low-capacity clubs and sweaty, dimly-lighted rooms.

Red Eye kicks off his CRASH PLANET label with a release that harkens back to the early days of rave culture. "Power People" blends acid house, breakbeats, tribal beats, and a call to activism to rousing effect.
"I wanted to make something that reminded me of that kind of San Francisco rave music that came out in the early 90's. Something you'd hear at an outdoor party. That music was so genre non-specific. 'Underground rave music' WAS the genre. Lots of samples, kinda hypnotic, slightly progressive, but tribal, acidy, and funky too"

About the mix: "I’m deeply honoured to be asked to do the House of Others 100th podcast. I’ve been listening since #2 Paurro and #6 Boyyyish! I tried to make this a really personal mix, themed around the Posthuman release “It’s A House Thing” from 2015. It features music by many of my friends and labelmates – Lauren Flax, Alinka, Elisa Bee, Paranoid London, Black Girl / White Girl, Hard Ton and more. For me, house music – particularly acid house – is a central part of my life’s work. I’ve been running I Love Acid for 18 years now, and the people involved in it have become family. I think it’s important to use any influence or power you have to make the scene better for others – to be the kind of person YOU needed when you were starting out. It’s easy to talk big online (everybody does!) but it’s the actions you take that count, and I’d prefer to be known not so much for my silly social media noise - but for the music I play, the people I book to DJ at my parties, and the artists I release on my record label."
