In October of this year two redwood logs were donated by Humboldt Redwoods State Park to the Round Valley Indian Tribes for the purpose of carving canoes that were once widely used by native people to travel throughout Northern California. Native Way, a youth mentorship program ran by the Round Valley Indian Tribes worked with Native Health in Native Hands, a tribal non-profit that is revitalizing cultural practices. There are even more partners and stakeholders who have been part of this as well, like the Eel River Recovery Project, and people who work in state parks. The day the logs were driven by truck into the valley, a big salmon feast was held at Hidden Oaks Park in Covelo. After multiple thefts occurred in a business park, resulting in the loss of pallets of toys intended to be distributed to needy kids in the region, the community is coming together to ensure that the holiday spirit cannot be broken by this devastating burglary. Lisa Music reports.

After Eureka Mayor Frank Jagger made a surprising call for nonprofits to submit proposals for a temporary sanctuary camp, AHHA rose to the challenge with a model they've been developing for the past year. While not an official meeting, Councilwoman Kim Bergel as well as Supervisors Bohn and Lovelace attended the session to learn more. While it seemed like there are serious details to work out, overall this is the closest Eureka has ever come to having a legal campground for homeless folks. Ama Tierney brings you the story.
