In October of this year two redwood logs were donated by Humboldt Redwoods State Park to the Round Valley Indian Tribes for the purpose of carving canoes that were once widely used by native people to travel throughout Northern California. Native Way, a youth mentorship program ran by the Round Valley Indian Tribes worked with Native Health in Native Hands, a tribal non-profit that is revitalizing cultural practices. There are even more partners and stakeholders who have been part of this as well, like the Eel River Recovery Project, and people who work in state parks. The day the logs were driven by truck into the valley, a big salmon feast was held at Hidden Oaks Park in Covelo. Listen to this report to hear stories from the people who are part of transforming the redwood logs into canoes.
