Drumcomplex has been one of Germany’s most dedicated techno artists since the late 1990’s. With two and a half decades of music experience under his belt, he has been crafting his own complex space within the techno industry. 

Via releases for Carl Cox’s Intec Digital, Monika Kruse’s Terminal M and Eats Everything’s EI8HT imprint, to name just a few, Drumcomplex lands on Kneaded Pains with a spectacular two track single.

A bouncing kick and transcendental mallet hits open title track ‘Carbon’, as rubbery bass and clattering percs are added to the stomping rhythm for a very cool industrial techno workout.  On ‘Anemone’ a growling bass riff crawls around a sturdy and functional techno beat for a classy deep club track.

Tokyo techno star Risa Taniguchi delivers her third release for Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains label with the bustling ‘Insomnia’ EP.

The classically trained and skilled musician has always drawn inspiration from the underground scene of her home city, and playing clubs such as Vent, Contact and Womb.  Releases for labels like CLR, Octopus Recordings, Cin Cin and Odd Recordings have helped her build up an international reputation.

A trio of pumping and rolling techno jams are offered up on the ‘Insomnia’ EP, each one peppered with animated riffs, frenzied percussion and raw energy.

Having knocked some serious bangers out the park already for Kneaded Pains, it’s a welcome return to the label for Luciid, dropping a pair of heavy hitters of the ‘808Hate’ single.

Laced with hardcore rave tropes, Luciid’s pounding and panel beating breakbeats are not for the feint hearted, and he deploys huge drops and battering drums all over the title track ‘808Hate’.

Accompanying cut ‘Jack’s Hammer’ certainly doesn’t drop the ferocity or intensity, as another round of breakneck beats slap the listener around the chops whilst its vocal instructs that due praise to be given.

Dubfire really needs little in the way of introduction, but for the uninitiated, the hugely prolific DJ & producer has been at the forefront of the electronic scene since the earliest days.  As one half of house music titans Deep Dish, through to his more techno focused career as Dubfire, huge singles like ‘Ribcage’ and ‘Roadkill’, and his own SCI+TEC label, the Iranian born artist has more than left his mark on the dance music scene.

‘Sound Bath’ drops on Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains label and illustrates the resolute sounds that Dubfire has become revered for.  A minimal and stripped back production keeps active with metallic and fissured tones, as an ever-present percussive loop anchors this impressive club cut, where the ‘less if more’ ethic is deployed auspiciously.

Rising star, Sophia Saze, has been impressing with her productions and remixes for labels such as Tresor, Counterchange and Krill Music, and her take on ‘Sound Bath’ centres on the addition of an arpeggiated synth line and acid pulses that really ramp up the energy levels!

Proving that you can’t keep a good grove down, Dubfire’s ‘Sound Bath’ gets the re-rub from the ever-reliable Will Clarke, adding another sure-fire winner into Kneaded Pain’s bustling catalogue.

Dubfire needs little introduction, suffice to say that the legendary DJ & producer has been behind huge singles like ‘Ribcage’, ‘Roadkill’ as well as his own SCI+TEC label.  Will Clarke, meanwhile, has forged his own illustrious career, launching his own All We Have Is Now imprint, alongside releases for labels such as Trick, We Are The Brave, Relief and Drumcode.

Clarke remodels ‘Sound Bath’ into a chunky floor filler, replete with high octane twists and turns and that infectious lead line.

Having conquered her native country Spain already, the effervescent artist has racked up an enviable touring schedule that has made a serious dent in territories such as The Netherlands, Belgium and France, with prestigious gigs clocked up in all four corners of the globe.

Via her Silver M label, and releases & remixes for Set About, Techno Is Our Destiny and Gain Records, her productions have been working the dancefloors she so regularly plays to.  Two high intensity tracks feature on the ‘Harmony’ single, showcasing the explosive sounds and party vibes that have become synonymous with Hajji’s sound to date.

Australian DJ & producer Juliet Fox has been making big waves in the electronic and techno music scene of late, and her debut for Kneaded Pains demonstrates just why she’s making a big noise right now.

With releases and remixes for the likes of Off Recordings, Filth On Acid and her own TREGAMBE label, Fox turns in a couple of storming cuts on her new single.

Operating on the harder side of the techno spectrum, Fox turns up the heat on ‘Vibrational Frequency’ as thunderous kick drums, clipped vocals, and a potent acid riff zip past in this punchy and powerful offering. Hailing from Co. Donegal in Ireland, Disfreq have been tearing it up on the scene of late via releases on Patrick Topping’s Trick label, Solomon’s Diynamic imprint and REALM Records. 

On the ‘Liveware’ EP for Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains, the duo delivers a trio of heady groovers in their inimitable style.  Raw drums and bouncing toms lay the groundwork on the title track, as a rasping synth motif is stamped on top, serving up an epic dancefloor moment in the process. 

A hedonistic tone is set on ‘Eternity’ as melodic touches and a breathy vocal are added to a muscular groove, whilst ‘Trial Motive’ rounds off an engaging release with another pumping track, blazing with robotic vox and buzzing acidic refrains.

This is the question I wanted to answer with this DJ set. 90 beats per minute is a relatively slow tempo for a modern dance floor and the kick drum patterns are quite irregular, yet there are many similarities. That is why I put together this mix so as to highlight the relationship inherent within the two genres. Low Jack, Bobby Konders and Blawan make appearances in the mix with 909 high hats swirling around Yamaha DX7 synth basslines and breakbeats bursting through thundering kick drums, all hallmarks of techno yet framed in a dancehall setting. ‘Hardcore Happiness’ wears it’s rave influences on its sleeve, from the rattling breakbeat to the hardcore stabs, all underpinned with a thunderous kick drum, techno tracks don’t come bigger than this!

Wrapping up a hugely productive 2019, Dense & Pika’s Kneaded Pains imprint ends the year with a big bang release, bringing together a killer single from Andres Campo, and a simply huge remix from Skream.

Campo, having cut his teeth on the Spanish club scene, has seen his ascendency rise this year with a stream of releases for labels such as Intec, Odd Recordings and Second State, as well as the inauguration of his label, EI8HT, that he runs with Eats Everything. 

‘Complicated’ is a big, bold, club roller, its muscular beats and frenzied mechanical tones leans upon Detroit’s musical origins whilst carrying the weight of current big room aesthetics.  Dubstep pioneer, Skream, reveals his techno chops, with a stunning remix; a linear rhythm never drops in energy levels, as the synth stabs are fed through the filter, for a no-nonsense, first class banger!

Aloof melodies and synth riffs are deployed over the sturdy beats of ‘Ray’, as Campo takes it ‘one deeper’ on this direct and headsey cut.
