Mix of the Week #400: the Pilotwings - Being an alterno in the suburbs

The origins of Front de Cadeaux can be traced back to a dating site for bears, some ten years ago. After Maurizio had spotted a Felix Kubin poster on one of Ugo’s pictures, the two started chatting. Very much intrigued, Ugo invited Maurizio, who lives in Brussels, to play at a festival he organised in Rome. Shortly thereafter Maurizio became a resident of Ugo’s Subwoofer night, one of the first bear parties in Europa that existed outside of the mainstream bear realm. The two bonded over food of course, over their belief that dance culture is rotting from the inside, and even more over slow, heavy electronic music. You have to picture it: a flat in Brussels, a table with empty bowls and bottles, thick smoke and these two daddy dj’s listening to stacks and stacks of UK rave and breakbeat records on 33 instead of 45 rpm. Testing how deep and sexy these garbage records sound at a pace the bears can actually follow without dropping dead – Ugo & Maurizio baptised it ‘supreme rallentato’. Photo by Caroline Lessire.

The next instalment in the Phase Group Mix series is delivered by dear friend and contributing artist to the label, Low Bat. 

Low Bat lives amongst the black coal hills of northern France. When he isn’t marking textbooks and exposing Neue Deutsche Welle to the classrooms, the French DJ, musician and teacher keeps himself busy playing with his band Jean Luc, co-running the Yellow Light of Death festival and curating radio as 1/3 of the team behind Tblisi’s Mutant Radio. 

On top of this, he makes up 1/2 of Lowspace, the newest additions to Phase Group, who’s split tape with Lostsoundbytes will be coming out in December

His Phase Group Mix is a masterfully sequenced mad ride through post punk, psych rock, French trip hop, and proto trance. Thanks Louis!

For the next episode of Knekelhuis we've invited Utrecht based, but intergalactic in his mind, Luke Cohlen. We know Luke as a key player in the Dom city underground scene, not only as a stand-out DJ and fanatic digger, but as a pusher of Stranded FM and core member of the intimate electronic music collective Cultfarm.  His sets always present a signature style - rhythmic, trippy, and evocative. For our 60th episode Luke prepared a raw and autonomous mix, interpreting the ethos of Knekelhuis. By playing looming and twisted electronics that he finds a perfect fit with the label. A blend of spoken word and fine  intersections between wave, post-punk, dub and electro, that he holds so dear.

Curva Imposible is a gathering in Barcelona that explores the most enigmatic margins of music in unique spaces.

The latest event featured local and international acts like Bejota Nova, Lato A, Pedro D. Sáiz, ML, Tomaga, Ron V/D, Don The Tiger, Estades, Andre Pahl & Alicia Carrera, Heap and Rabih Beaini.

The Mystic Room is the place thought for mental relaxation where any sonic oddities could happen - for this occasion, secret guest André Pahl and I played the last slot, acompanied by the nicest crowd.

Big thanks to André Pahl, all the listeners that accompanied us along the journey, to Meri Bonastre, Vir and all the artists and friends involved.
