Junododownload review: Robert Kavanagh aka Mode_1 serves up his fourth release on Knotweed with an inspired EP that is sure to appeal to Detroit techno lovers. Coming across like a more club-focused version of Terrence Dixon, these four tracks are punctuated by eerie textures and stripped back yet insistent rhythms. "Unheard" features chiming bells and a rolling groove, while "Reactor" sees Mode_1 drop a more hypnotic take on this approach, with tight, nagging percussion supporting waves of discordant sound. On "Missing Cable", the sound is deeper, as layered sounds unravel over a bubbling backing, while as its title suggests, "Cascade" features the sound of water trickling over a pared back but insistent rhythm.

"The ever-prolific Brendon Moeller returns with a third EP for Knotweed under his Echologist alias, treading the line between glitchy minimal, propulsive techno and dubwise immersion with flair and poise. There are some powerful, deeply submerged kicks to be enjoyed on 'Activation', but they're not just deployed as standard. On 'Concentrate' they might be more prominent, but still there's a sense of confident restraint in which Moeller can create captivating energy and a full-frequency experience without resorting to obvious tactics. For those who favour something a little more stimulating and subtle from their techno experience, this EP has everything you need."

Juno Review: Knotweed welcomes back a label regular in A Thousand Details here and he once again delves deep into groovy machine funk. His high-impact sound is always intense but is never short on style. 'Hammersmith Conjunction' is up first and races out of the blocks on some surging, serene and Detroit-style techno. 'Ashbourne Grove' is a more heads-down affair for the dark of the night with paranoid synth patterns looping tightly over the cantering drums. 'Colorious' ups the ante with bristling percussive loops and 'Pimlico Astor' shuts down with some edginess that will keep you on your toes.

To finish the year, I just had fun recording a fast and furious vinyl mix with some recent vinyl acquisitions: 32 different vinyl in 55 minutes... This type of mixing does not do justice to some the tracks as I only play maximum 2 minutes per record, but it is fun to do... Not always 100% precise, but it carries a certain amount of groove and energy.

The five Knotweed vinyl released this year are in the mix: KW055 (Myk Derill), KW056 (Coefficient), KW057 (Lee Holman remix of my track Light Switch), KW058 (A Thousand Details) and KW059 (Gonzalo MD).

There's a serious message running through the latest release on Decision Making Theory. The work of label owner Philippe Petit, it states that humanity is witnessing 'a meltdown' and that we will be left to deal with the aftermath. By way of a soundtrack, there's the knotted, acid-heavy "Causes", while the title track is a heads-down, relentless affair that just keeps on building. Thankfully though, it's not all bad news; closing track "Consequences" offers some solace. Despite cruises along at 130bpm, its layered, building chords and scatter gun percussion create a euphoric Detroit-style finale to this socially aware EP.

Junodownload Review:
Zreik previously released with music on Knotweed with his studio partner as Dying & Barakat, but he flies solo for this EP on sister imprint Decision Making Theory. Musically it's not a huge leap, with many of the nuances and aesthetic of Knotweed writ large here. "Inner Space" is a high-paced Detroit techno affair, led by rattling, steely percussion and populated by a mysterious synth line. On "Reason to Believe", Zreik travels down a more foreboding path, with its minimal growl and a complex, steely rhythm that sounds similar to the darker side of Terrence Dixon's material - who is also a Knotweed artist. On "In My Mind", he reverts to a deeper approach but on this occasion, the rhythm is more dense and the electronic riffs rise hypnotically through the arrangement.

DMT022 - Gonzalo MD - Accept the Future E.P.

Based in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Rodrigo Agüero, aka DYING, has been busy mixing and producing techno for years. I got to know him first via his release on my friend Simon's CLFT label (from Lyon): 'Conviction': it was released at the end of 2012, together with his partner in crime Yibran Barakat. A very nice piece of techno, remixed by Mattias Fridell, MTD and Jeroen Search: essential release! It did not take too long for Dying & Barakat to get in touch with me. In 2015 they showed me the track 'Modernismo' and I was immediately convinced I needed to release it. Early 2016 the wax was ready: Knotweed Records 018, with three original tracks and an incredible remix from Bleak. Then, exactly 2 years later, in February 2018, I released another killer 4-tracker from them entitled 'El sueño de una teoría': a very immersive piece of techno like only they can do. In August 2018, Rodrigo and Yibran traveled to Europe, played a few live gigs (Tresor in Berlin being one of their many highlights) and stopped by in Chamonix. We had a fantastic time together and I managed to arrange for a gig at la Cabane du Cerro where they delivered an incredible live gig for our aural pleasure. Dying & Barakat still produce some music, but at the moment each on his own. Last Autumn I released Yibran's new project, 'Zreik' (DMT021 - Inner Space) and I will release a solo record from Rodrigo as DYING on Knotweed Records later on this year. So keep your yes and ears open, as you will hear more from Rodrigo sooner than you think. In the meantime, he recorded a fantastic mix for us, which clearly shows his Detroit influences while he plays techno: dive in his universe, it is full of good music!
