I first heard of Julixo when I put my hands on his fantastic EP called Silas released on Rauh 005.

After that, I kept a close eye on the sounds he was posting, and when I heard REBHO, I knew we were going to do something together. The warm synth line, together with the jackin drum patterns, were perfect. Then came REFLECTIONS, which fitted superbly with REBHO. Although slower, and maybe more introspective, you still have that warm feeling going through the track.

We decided to go with LIFE OF CRIME on the other side of the record. Much more aggressive in its construction, that track deserved a side on its own: modern techno at its best.

I hope you will enjoy this nice versatile release as much as I do!

I have asked Benales, Opuswerk and Gonzalo MD to promote the upcoming Knotweed Records 019 Various Artists release by recording a podcast with all 4 tracks in it.

Fasten your seatbelt, second in line for this exercise is Gonzalo MD!

Gonzalo MD is a producer coming straight from Buenos Aires, Argentina. He likes to qualify his music as hypnotic dub techno with a touch of darkness & Detroit and I think that suits his sound very well. He tests his own productions regularly in Buenos Aires, where he DJs often with all the usual suspects. He has already more than a handful of releases on Knotweed Records, Decision Making Theory, Ressort Imprint and Extrasolar.

After hearing this mix, we are all waiting to see Gonzalo cross the ocean and greet us with his amazing full-on no concession mixes in Europe - soon we hope!

"On 02.02.2018, Gonzalo MD and I played at Tresor.Berlin (OFFICIAL), together with many other great artists. After 6 years of musical collaboration, it was the first time I met Gonzalo, and the first time I saw him play. His set was incredible, I was blown away. He set the bar very high and the pressure was on me when I followed his wonderful 2.5 hours set...

I started at 6:30 AM and you can now listen to my closing set at will (and download it if you want to). After the first 3 hours, you can hear Gonzalo joining me for 1 hour of back-to-back action. We stopped around 10:30 in the morning, we were knackered, but more importantly we were very happy!

Many thanks to Alex and Diana and the Tresor staff for getting Gonzalo and I to play together, it was a memorable night! And of course thanks a lot to all the dancers who made the roof sweat :-)

Knotweed Podcast 13 - Philippe Petit live at Tresor 02.02.2018

After his first contribution to Knotweed in 2015 (KW017 - Reflections E.P.) and his incredible track 'Own Structure' on KW020 Various Artists in 2016, Julixo is back on Knotweed with a full E.P.

Julixo is one of a kind producer. A drummer at heart, he has a broad interest in all types of music, and you can really feel it in his tracks where he loves to experiment with many different vibes.

The record opens with 'Red Valhalla', a though techno attack in the vein of his previous track 'Life of Crime', made to decimate the dancefloor. Julixo increases the pitch one notch and takes a more funky twist with the breakbeat infected 'Rose Tape', fast and to the point. The B side continues where 'Own Structure' left off: two tracks relying heavily on vocal and synth samples to bulldoze their way through your brain: Julixo is having fun, and you can feel it - it is contagious!

It is the rawness of this record that makes it special.

Julixo finally follows up his 2015 debut on Knotweed with this no-nonsense EP. The ominously titled "Red Valhalla" sounds exactly like its title, with dense, compressed kicks and razor wire percussion conjuring up a hard techno lover's vision of heaven. In a similar vein is the straight to the point "Fucked Up Drummer", where pounding drums support grinding riffs and wave upon wave of churning percussion. "Soulwave" is a slower and looser, but still an equally effective tough club workout. In contrast to all of these tracks is "Rose Tape"; based on a stepping, slinky electro arrangement, it still contains more grimy matter than the floor of an abandoned warehouse after a 24-hour party.

Mode_1 is best known for his DJ sets at the recently shuttered District 8 club in Dublin. He now takes the expertise that he built up spinning in that venue and applies it to his dance floor productions. "Shifted" kick starts the release in high-paced mode with an eerie rhythm track swooping in to the sound of furious claps. "Satellites" is more reserved but similar in mood, as resonating, tonal bleeps unfold over staccato drums. On "Final Approach", he ups the intensity levels again, with a pounding kick underpinning bleak tones, while closing out this debut EP is the slightly deeper but still forceful tech-house of "Lasting Thought".

There's a serious message running through the latest release on Decision Making Theory. The work of label owner Philippe Petit, it states that humanity is witnessing 'a meltdown' and that we will be left to deal with the aftermath. By way of a soundtrack, there's the knotted, acid-heavy "Causes", while the title track is a heads-down, relentless affair that just keeps on building. Thankfully though, it's not all bad news; closing track "Consequences" offers some solace. Despite cruises along at 130bpm, its layered, building chords and scatter gun percussion create a euphoric Detroit-style finale to this socially aware EP.

Irish DJ/producer Lee Holman appears for French imprint Knotweed proper, first making his impression on sister label Decision Making Theory (DMT) with the Provider EP last year. The Kawl chief is in fine form on "Class Warfare" nailing that majestic Purposemaker vibe of old with hypnotic chiming melodies but with the added fury of broken beats beneath. Holman really finds his own sound on the next cut "Shifting Axis" which was our definite favourite of the bunch. This dreamy and evocative journey takes in the best of hypnotic techno and IDM and has potential for crossover appeal. Finally, Holman gets back to the program on the grinding cyclicality of "Primary System" fuelled by a Robert Hood style monosynth bassline, ethereal pads and austere rhythm work.

Zreik previously released with music on Knotweed with his studio partner as Dying & Barakat, but he flies solo for this EP on sister imprint Decision Making Theory. Musically it's not a huge leap, with many of the nuances and aesthetic of Knotweed writ large here. "Inner Space" is a high-paced Detroit techno affair, led by rattling, steely percussion and populated by a mysterious synth line. On "Reason to Believe", Zreik travels down a more foreboding path, with its minimal growl and a complex, steely rhythm that sounds similar to the darker side of Terrence Dixon's material - who is also a Knotweed artist. On "In My Mind", he reverts to a deeper approach but on this occasion, the rhythm is more dense and the electronic riffs rise hypnotically through the arrangement.

I was over the moon when Len Faki asked me to be part of the figure SPC serie, first in 2014 (U) and then again in 2015(W), culminating with a 5-hour set opening the Figure night at Berghain 24th October 2015, a moment I will never forget! (yes 5 hours as I was lucky enough to play when the summer time changed to winter hence the extra hour).

After sorting out my vinyl, I decided to mix the second part of the figure SPC alphabet (a few letters are missing as I do not have them all on vinyl).

To add a bit of spice and fun, I mixed them in the order they came out between 2011 and 2016 - enjoy!

There was a part of my vinyl collection that I had not sorted yet: the 'rock section'. I realised that I had more rock, punk, metal  and hardcore vinyl in Chamonix than I though, definitely enough to prepare a one hour mixtape. While living in Brussels, I used to make gazillions of rock, metal, punk and hardcore mixtapes for my friends, spending time on the vinyl selection and on the K7 artwork carefully prepared around the tracklist: it was so much fun!  Here I selected loads of tracks that made my day back in the eighties: yes, this is part of what got me into techno: dig in!

Having made his name on a stellar mix for the Modular Expansion Podcast, Dying producer from Buenos Aires, Rodrigo Aguero, makes it to Philippe Petit's Knotweed label outta Chamonix! Keeping it real with a straight up four-track techno EP, Aguero sends in a watertight recipe of stretched, bent and detuned synths that flow between a classic array of '90s inspired techno drums. With some quality electro making it into the lo-fi grain of "Gate 7", the two tracks that hit hardest are the strafing atmospheres and 909 beats of both "Deux Ex Machina" and "Ciudad Incognita". For you harder, more classic yet stripped back bassline techno head straight to "The Last Chance To Survive".
