City Fly return for their 15th release, backed by serious muscle in the form of NY*AK, and fellow contributors Ian Blevins and Mark Hand, who make up the stomping and spectacular Afghan Jams EP. Starting strong is ‘Return’, with a relentless dub techno energy, graced later by soft vocals and euphoric violin strings making for an epic dancefloor anthem. ‘Slick’, with Mark Hand, veers off into a loose, crackly acid trip. It’s followed by ‘Troia’, rounding off side A with an all-out party of flutes and keys over one infectious ecosystem of drums. Then, on side B, ‘We Both Know’ comes through; NY*AK’s eye-catching, sample-heavy jam with Ian Blevins with an eerie bassline. And the EP concludes with title track ‘Afghan Jam’, featuring Mark Hand - a special groove captured mid-session. Something a house head can easily get lost in.

PREMIERE: DJ Pelouse - Pana Coton (Luv Mix)

We’re putting out the first Mister Saturday Night Records release in a long while. It’s by Russell E.L. Butler, and it’s called “Blah Blah”. The record comes out on Friday, September 4, and it contains three tracks made in Prague at the Synthesizer Library and one track made in Russell’s pre-New York home in Oakland.

On the EP’s release date Sept 4th, which is Bandcamp Day, all of the Mister Saturday Night Records share of Bandcamp proceeds from the release will go to Princess Janae Place, an organization that provides referrals to housing for chronically homeless LGBTQ adults in the New York Tri-state area, with direct emphasis on Trans/GNC people of color.

The vinyl release, designed by Boot Boyz Biz, includes a poster featuring these words from Russell:

What are my dreams when they are spoken into real space? Are they statements centering my desires? Are they indictments to hold myself accountable to my vision of life?

My consciousness is meandering and at times I celebrate this drone of words. Stripped of meaning, to reveal what’s beneath. Not an answer, but further questions. The purpose of the mantra is to quiet the conscious mind until the spirit takes over.

Place is important. It grounds the abstract in our humanity. These things came from somewhere. Many places. To culminate into one. Connecting them all. And creating something entirely new. Not an answer, but more questions.

Unknown Mobile should change his name to Banger Mobile because I feel like every time one Levi’s tune hits my ears I’m literally fuckin’ reelin’ for the dancefloor. “Tired”, his contribution to a killer various artists compilation on These Things Take Time hits on all the right levels and might be my favorite from his growing discography. Reviews aren’t supposed to be sad, but I’m pretty fucking sad that I can’t get absolutely destroyed by this tune on one of my local rave systems. I know, times are tough right now, but we will persevere and slaps like this will get the dancefloor time they deserve. OR WILL THEY!? I don’t fuckin’ know, okay. All I know is that I’d trade 30 Molson Canadian’s for a chance to take this tune out for a rip at Panorama Bar.

Normally, I’d have the words to describe the tune in finer detail. In the past I’ve given breakdowns of specific instrumentation choices and I’d point out the track’s perceived genre influences. BUT LIKE, THAT IS NOT RELEVANT RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I’M TOO BUSY SMASHING THE REPEAT BUTTON WITH MY WHOLE FUCKING FACE. PLEASE GOD SOMEONE MAKE ME A 45-MIN VERSION OF THIS TUNE. It’s really just everything I love about the current flavor of tech house and deep house and labels like Casa Voyager, Coymix, Dance All Day, etc. Floaty yet PUMPY, driving, spacey, punchy, techy, fuck man. Proper grammar goes right out the window when a track hits like “Tired” does.

Anyways, I hope ya’ll enjoy the one review I’ll write this year, and I hope it came across that I really really really love this tune. And for the love of all that is holy please check out the full project. Regularfantasy has assembled a serious cast of characters for this one and there are plenty of other amazing tunes to be heard.
Compilation: Vol. 002 is set for release on October 9th on all your favorite online shops. Cop it from Bandcamp, though. Big love to ya’ll. Stay safe. Stay well. Stay golden.

*Premiere* Nørus - Our Special Place

This track selection follows Ben’s Nightwork EP, released with YAM records in April. The title track ft Joe Armon Jones was selected by Mary Ann Hobbs on 6 music, and was praised by various selectors in the scene including Benji B, Moxie, Wbeeza and many more. 

The south Londoner is not new to applying his distinctive sound to different genres , with this release ranging from breaks to uk garage to acid house. Club music with no thrills. Simple and to the point . 
 Ben's music has often led to the more ‘musical’ or ‘jazzy’ side to dance music. With past features with the likes of Nubya Garcia, Joe Armon Jones, as well as writing credits on Oscar Jerome's Gravitate which features on his album Breathe Deep.  

 However, don’t expect any jazzy collaborations on this one. There is a conscious sense of no bullshit energy throughout this release. With tracks leaning more towards the sounds of Mr G as opposed to Ben’s more (as he puts) ‘Spotify friendly’ sound. 

ONE YEAR DANCE is a homage to relationships ending, and clubs. closing.
