Here is the story of a little girl learning to play the violin. She struggles to play, and through her struggle she creates a new way of practicing: she imagines bringing her stuffed animal to life; a simple, Orange Elephant. He awakens, sits at a tiny piano (which is the same size as him now) and, for a moment,  plays a tune for her. She is taken by a melody, and plays it, completely enraptured by the intensity and simpleness of the piece.

The Orange Elephant

The anonymous twentieth-century melody A New Commandment was written for the well-known passage from St John’s Gospel (chapter 13, verses 34-35), beginning: 'A new commandment I give unto you, that you love one another as I have loved you'. This fantasia builds on the theme with colour and drama, using two complete statements and several interludes based on fragments of the melody.
Alan Bullard's Piano Prayer and Praise series contains solo piano pieces, mainly based on well-known hymns or worship songs, suitable for use in church services – either played complete or using sections as shorter interludes.

Sometimes a melody appears out of nowhere, as if someone were guiding their fingers by drawing a line that ends up being beautiful, without having put in any intention, any previous idea, any structure and, obviously, no architecture. It flows and emerges. It happens to me often and I don't know how to explain it. It is an easy air. It lets go and fills the environment. If sound is vibration in the air, I can find no other explanation than feeling that the air facilitates the vibration having its echo. The air accompanies this composition-improvisation. And the air structures it. And the air amplifies it. And that's how it is and that's how it flows.
A voltes una melodia apareix del no res, com si algú guiés els dits dibuixant una línia que acaba sent bonica, sense que hagi posat cap intenció, cap idea prèvia, cap estructura i, evidentment, cap arquitectura.  Flueix i sorgeix. Em passa sovint i no sé explicar-ho. És un aire fàcil. Es deixa anar i omple l'ambient. Si el so és vibració en l'aire no trobo més explicació que el sentir que l'aire facilita que la vibració tingui el seu eco. L'aire acompanya aquesta composició-improvisació. I l'aire l'estructura. I l'aire l'amplifica. I així és i així flueix.
A veces una melodía aparece de la nada, como si alguien guiara los dedos dibujando una línea que acaba siendo bonita, sin que haya puesto ninguna intención, ninguna idea previa, ninguna estructura y, evidentemente, ninguna arquitectura. Fluye y surge. Me pasa a menudo y no sé explicarlo. Es un aire fácil.  Se deja ir y llena el ambiente. Si el sonido es vibración en el aire no encuentro ninguna explicación más que el sentir que el aire facilita que esa vibración tenga su eco. El aire acompaña esta composición-improvisación. Y el aire la estructura. El aire la amplifica. Y así es y así fluye.

Echoes of Circassia: Circassian Songs for Solo Piano is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring spirit of Circassian music. Spanning 21 tracks, this collection brings together traditional melodies from both the North Caucasian homeland and the far-reaching Circassian diaspora.

Rooted in centuries of history, Circassian music is rich with emotion, rhythm, and cultural memory. These solo piano interpretations aim to honour that legacy, offering a reflective, intimate space where ancestral sounds meet contemporary expression.

Homeland of the Circassians

Sirius (Σείριος) was a Greek street dog, playful and kind. Sirius wandered the Athens streets until he was adopted by a lonely, gifted young boy. The two become inseparable. Sirius, whose name means bright and shining, loved running along the beaches of the Aegean in the summer with his boy. Sirius sadly passed away unexpectedly while his boy was away at work and is now a star shining in the sky. He glows especially brightly during the long, hot Greek summer.

Composer/pianist Samuel H. Gray heard this story from the boy, who is now a young man. Sirius and the sombre major-minor Sirius theme came to Samuel in a dream one night. He woke up and wrote the melody down. The other pieces in the suite are fully spontaneously composed, in honour of Sirius' beautiful, playful nature.
