"Hamburg's mastering maestro and edit extraordinaire returns to Kojak Giant Sounds, following up his 2013 Roy Ayres edit with this swinging two tracker of groove based delights. On the A-side "Carrie On" bursts out the blocks with tough additional drums and a replayed buzzing synth bassline before settling into a swinging jazz influenced groove complete with rasping sax, off kilter piano chords and warm vibraphone licks. Perfect for the warm up, cool down or simply to switch things up a little, this cut perfectly marries the club friendly bottom end thump with sophisticated melodies. On the B-side, the title track plunges us into the psychedelic swirl of an ancient tribal ritual. Ever changing polyrhythms bump, thump and rattle and the additional synth bass throbs through the subs, feeding the dancefloor frenzy while raucous brass and group vocal chants put you slap bang in the middle of the action. Herman Prime’s debut 12”, “Maajo” is a beautiful ode to spring and new birth. "Maajo" pays homage to Nigerian music, with its borrowed vocals from juju style’s King “Sunny” Ade. The track has a house foundation, which shows in its fat kick drums and sub bass groove, while the hypnotic Rhodes melody harkens to early minimal electronic pioneers such as Manuel Göttsching.

The B-side, “Maajo (Take Four)”, is a track of its own, a mutant revision of the emotional original. This version is not just a slightly altered copy but an electronic dub that takes the original to a completely different direction. Talking drums and a polyrhythm structure maintain the dreamy, Nigerian feel, but the dystopic, detuned synths have the scent of an underground techno bunker.

Jon Thureson, alias Herman Prime, has been open-mindedly DJing and producing music for 15 years. He has a broad understanding of musical language which helps him to infuse his various influences. With his strong background in house and disco, Jon often reaches beyond the limits of both genres towards new frontiers. His love affair with West African styles and electronic Krautrock shows on “Maajo”.

Seagull Records is a spin-off from disco rework factory Kojak Giant Sounds and “Maajo” is a slightly moodier and housier departure from the labels usual repertoire.

We’ve raved about the last Young Edits vinyl release on Foot & Mouth, and Luke Fosky’s exceptionally tasteful reworks of Kate Bush and Arthur Russell have restored a lot of my faith in the “soundcloud edit” as a viable genre. The fun continues here, where Stevie Nick’s vocals get wrapped up in some windswept drum patterns and echoing whistles, feeling faithful to the original but like a whole different beast at the same time.

B-Side is a twangy edit of The Catch’s “25 Years” that’s also worth investigating, especially when that saxaphone kicks in, damn."

It seems like aaaaages since there's been a Kojak Giant Sounds - I would use the Google and find out just how long if I wasn't too busy shaking all my shit to the shoulder rolling Afro-cosmic of "Kamassa Trip". That's right folks, Mike Burns' A-side smasher here is a fully fledged floor filler in pure Baldelli/Loda fashion. Drums clatter and batter, the bassline rolls on and on and funky pianos add a touch of disco flair, keeping us thrusting away to the MASSIVE vocal chant. Expertly arranged, extended into chest beating intensity and decorated with all sorts of tripped out fx, this one's coming home with me! Over on the flip, Stockholm's Beatconductor dishes out the Red Stripe and Panama Red with the squelchy, stretched and spangled "Sunshine Life", a seriously summery cod-reggae cut for all the disco drunkards.

Here, the Finland-based outfit welcomes one of the scene's most admired crate diggers and re-editors, Red Greg, to the label for the very first time. He's in fine form; first serving up the punchy, horn tooting, Latin-tinged, two-step disco-boogie of "Love Break", where a catchy female vocal rides a sumptuously warm and rich backing track. Over on side B, the dusty-fingered digger has his way with "Breakin'", a tropical disco cut from the Caribbean full of ear-catching bass guitar, bold horn lines, clipped guitars and eyes-closed electric piano solos."

DJ Ionik - R.I.P. Productions '95-'96 Megamixx

"The label with the giant sound is back for release number fifteen, Kojak's the name and edits are the game. Having previously played host to the likes of Nicholas, Maxxi Soundsystem and Al Kent, DJ Ionik's imprint has developed a pedigree for classy edits by players at the top of the game. For release number fifteen Ebony Cuts rolls up to the party, adjusts his tie and puts the champagne on ice. 

Up first under the scalpel is Jesse Gould's "Out of Work", an uptempo disco funk track with filtered guitar matched by a bouncing bassline.  This is one of those bumping disco funk tracks for peak time enjoyment. Ebony Cuts has stitched the vocal and instrumental versions from the original P&P release together and come out of it with a raw funk bomb. Samples are slightly off and bass drums double over each other, but I don't care and neither does Ebony Cuts. A wild disco edit that can hide a shoddy mix, perfect.

On the flipside Ebony Cuts extends Roy Ayers' "Can't You See Me" into a finger clicking, shoulder popping groovathon. Thanks to a subtle restructure of the track, the smooth jazz funk of the original is given some extra dancefloor dynamics, with each instrumental break looped up for full impact. This is the classiest of cocktail disco, the kind of track Dimitri plays while he sips on a white russian."

何と言っても注目したいのが「Roy Ayers / Can't You See Me」のエディットとなるB「Can't You See Me (Ebony Cuts Edits)」。原曲ではドラムブレイクから本編へとすぐに入っていくため、殆どの場合クイック・ミックスする事が多かったのですが、このエディットではブレイクが引き延ばされ、しかもそこから中盤のヴァイブ＆スキャット・ソロに至るインストパートを用意し、ループと再構築を交えて、ジワジワとしたビルドアップ感を携えて本編へと持っていけるという抜群の仕上がり！そしてAサイドには、Billy Nicholas手掛けた【P&P】産のブギー/ディスコ・ナンバーJesse Gould「Out Of Work」のエディットで、こちらもインストパートを主軸に、そのドライブ感のあるブラック・ディスコ・サウンドを構築していた、こちらも素晴しい仕上がり。オススメです！"

Now, nearly a decade after first joining forces, they’ve finally made their vinyl debut.

If you’re going to take a decade to get round to making a record, you better make it a good one. Fortunately for Watts and Lewis, this two-tracker for Kojak Giant Sounds is pretty damn nifty. As debuts go, it’s a beauty. Regular Kojak Giant Sounds buyers will know what to expect: dancefloor-friendly productions that blur the boundaries between re-edit, remix and original production. The label tends not to release bog standard re-edits, and these edits/remixes/reworks – call them what you will – are anything but ordinary.

The real killer here is “Criticize”, a version of Alexander O’Neal’s 1987 cut of the same name that turns the smooth original inside out. Gone are the majority of O’Neal’s slick vocals and the past-their-prime Jam & Lewis synth grooves. Instead, we get a chugging, dubbed-out electrofunk groove that morphs into thrilling old skool house jam half way through. The sheer excitement and impact of that drop can’t be underestimated; it’s a bona fide killer. It turns what could have been a fairly standard cut into a genuine banger.

Flipside “His Hat Was His Home” doesn’t quite have the same impact, but it’s still pretty hot. Here, Bill Wolfer’s Roger Trouton style remake of “Papa Was A Rolling Stone” gets a Maxxi makeover. The duo put more emphasis on the sequenced bassline, add some dub effects and tighten up the beats in a version that’s judged to perfection."

"Absolute BOMB, huge tip on this remix/edit of former SOS Band member Alexander O Neal’s classic- droppin very soon on the might of Kojak Giant Sounds! It rips the cheese out of the original and tuns it into a nasty house jam, if this remix was done back then it would have been a house classic. Amazing flourishes added on top with dubby synths and old school perc keep it fitting the 87′ vibe. Maxxi Soundsystem have been around for 10 years rocking dancefloors around their home town of Brighton; re-editing at least half the tracks they play and are only now releasing their own material! watch out!"

"Brighton's Maxxi Soundystem ensemble drop their debut 12" on Kojak, Finland's finest. We were sent this a few weeks ago and it didn't quite fit in the bunch of moody midtempo sets we were doing for a few blogs etc, so I almost forgot about this release. It's quite a departure from the usual fare we cover on these pages, as we're dealing with peaktime disco fodder here, drawing heavily on cheeky 90s tunes (think wailing diva, electronic tom drums and euro synths). As bad as that might sound, Maxxi Soundsystems' deep and heavy rub of Alexander O'Neal's Critize works a real treat. While the original track is a genuine slice of late 80s cheeze (check out the original video here, it's awesome in a very twisted way) the rerub is a cool piece of modern boogie. The flip is cool too, but it's all about this track for me. Excellent record by one the coolest and most forward thinking labels around."
