Poet Of Ignorance

Performed by Vivian Chen at the University of Toronto in January 2015. 

The title "two edges" is derived from a quote by Virginia Woolf: "The beauty of the world, which is so soon to perish, has two edges, one of laughter, one of anguish, cutting the heart asunder." The piece is inspired by a conﬂict of thoughts, a split between two ideals which cannot be mutually realized. The idea for "two edges" arose while ruminating on my hometown of Kelowna, BC, and realizing that I was split between two very diﬀerent cities which I both consider to be "home." Musically, the divide is explored by combining an American minimalist language with Romantic piano gestures. Not only are these two styles in direct opposition with each other, but they are some of the ﬁrst to have sparked my deepened interest in music. As such, the piece incorporates  nearly forgotten melodies I conceived before moving to Toronto.

A Carafe, a Blind Glass 
A kind in glass and a cousin, a spectacle and nothing strange a single hurt color and an arrangement in a system to pointing. All this and not ordinary, not unordered in not resembling. The difference is spreading.
