We wrap up our Christmas run 2014 with a delectably nostalgia-tinged mixtape from long-standing Kompakt ally Tobias Thomas, Cologne's foremost selector when it comes to danceable drama and indie-flavored electronics. The brain and muscle behind the formative Total Confusion event series, he was one of the very first protagonists in modern club culture to embrace the divergent sonics from a then-nascent breed of new German acts like The Notwist, Tocotronic, Blumfeld, Fischmob and many others - thus building bridges between fomerly isolated scene habitats and de facto pioneering the notion of leftfield techno before it even existed. His selection is a more than fitting conclusion to our Advent podcast series, incorporating rare early outings from Kompakt staples like Jürgen Paape (under his long-lost Care monicker) or Wolfgang Voigt (as Mike Ink) alongside the idiosyncratic soundscapes of fringe pop mentor Arthur Russell or the nu-vintage dub textures of Rhythm & Sound. This is a very special mix. This mix is all about warming up a club. This mix is about how i started as a dj.
When i started to dj in public, i only did it for one reason, i missed good warm-up djs in Berlin. Luckily that changed over the past 15 years, but back in the days most djs opened the club with prime time uptempo house music. it always felt weird to me coming early to a club, still empty, but the dj already played tracks, i would expect during the peaktime.
My vision was always to start the night very slow, mellow and warm to built up an atmosphere. People should feel welcome by that kinda music, if the club is still empty/beginning to fill up. You go to the bar, have a drink, talking to some friends, checking out other guests and slowly getting into the groove. At some point you realize the club is getting buzy and there are people on the dancefloor and you start to dance while the dj is still playing it slow...
thats my vision and thats how I started 14 years ago.
So here is a brandnew mix only dedicated to the slow start into the night!
And by the way, the bar stuff will love you even more, if you start it slow and keep the volume on a decent level as long as the club is still filling up!

"While I’ve made many early morning expeditions to Robot Heart, this was my first adventure playing the famous bus. It was a bespoke musical experience and a true honor to play and become part of the family. Dust storms had been blowing amok that night, so many parties had been cancelled; yet so many fabulous people came out to dance and make it an unforgettable party.

My sound explores the spaces between groovy & psychedelic. I always try to bring a deeper experience to the dance floor without taking things too seriously. I want people to experience a heightened connection with the music, but most importantly just laugh and have a good time. I hope that vibe shines through in this recording. Much love."
