Barely a month after making his debut on AZZUR's multi-artist Bouquets Des Fleurs EP, Olaf Orbit pops up on Tom Tom Disco with his debut solo single. Title track 'Space Operator' shows that he has a firm grasp of nu-disco dynamics, with the up-and-coming producer adding spacey electronics, weirdo noises and trippy synth melodies to an arpeggio-style bassline reminiscent of New Order's 'Blue Monday'. Tony disco adds a little extra rubbery nu-disco bounce and some wonderfully deep-sounding breakdowns on his tidy remix, while bonus cut 'Olaf' is a bolder and even more synth-heavy tribute to the halcyon days of Italo-disco. As debut singles go, this is quietly impressive.

Duro returns with "Derrumbes Y Escaleras", the first collaboration from Iñigo Vontier & Theus Mago's upcoming album. The single is inspired by the Indian board game "Snakes and Ladders" and the hallucinogenic mushroom "psilocybe caerulescens" popularly known as "Derrumbe". This mushroom is one of the most important species in the country and was formerly used in prehispanic religious ceremonies. The trip comes with remixes by Englishman Chez de Milo and US duo Zillas On Acid.

His opener here is "Derrumbes Y Escaleras". Instantly you feel the effect of deep bass, ancestral flutes and psychedelic melodies coursing through your system, while the inner voices guide you to the deepest part of your being. Chez de Milo follows with a solid, rumbling percussion base, intoxicated flutes and synths laden you to the next existential plane.

The nine-minute Zillas On Acid’s trip uses the bassline to keep you lucid and present, while the flutes, frenetic arpeggios and percussion create an inner chaos. Inspired by the Mexican rave scene of the 2000s, the "Saiko Mix" has a catchy bouncy bass, rolling percussion and acid sounds that feel like melted lasers coming out of the speakers.

Closing the EP is the B-Side "Zumo Di Batuca", an experimental break cut. As it progresses the vocals and synthetic sounds disintegrate and melt into a solid, cyclical sound mix that keeps you in a trance state.

Topping off an incredible run that included last year’s releases SICKO (KOMPAKT 322) and YOU ARE A BLADE (KOMPAKT 343), UK producer and long-time Kompakt ally REX THE DOG presents two brand new jams on TEUFELSBERG - this latest offering connects the dots between the powerful, melody-driven techno of Rex’s earlier works and his current set-up that favors muscular, raw tracks with a distinctive analog bite. The latter is no accident, as Rex has become increasingly involved in DIY synth design, building his own modular hardware for studio and live use. Title cut TEUFELSBERG starts off lean and mean, quickly establishing momentum with propulsive beats and a simple, but seriously effective bass line – the track’s main protagonist, however, is a sweeping melody blowing up for the track’s entire run time, an utterly scenic synth job that doesn’t even flinch from a ground zero break. Meanwhile, the flip side shells out a proper rave whacking with industrial-infused banger SHORTWAVE - another relentlessl piece of prime time techno that is as monolithic as it is playful.

Als weiterer Höhepunkt eines unglaublichen Laufs, der letztes Jahr mit SICKO (KOMPAKT 322) und YOU ARE A BLADE (KOMPAKT 343) begann, präsentiert der UK-Produzent und langjährige Kompakt-Vertraute REX THE DOG zwei brandneue Knaller auf TEUFELSBERG – ein perfekter Spagat zwischen dem kraftvollen, melodieverliebten Techno seiner früheren Produktionen und dem rohen, muskulösen Stil mit analogem Biss, welcher seinen aktuellen Output charakterisiert. Letzteres sollte nicht verwundern, ist Rex doch zunehmend in Do-It-Yourself-Synthesizer-Design abgetaucht und baut inzwischen modulare Gerätschaften für seine Studio- und Bühnenbelange selbst. Das Titelstück TEUFELSBERG startet schlank und sehnig, dreht mit treibenden Beats und einer simplen, aber schwer effektiven Bassline schnell den Hahn auf – der wahre Star ist hier jedoch eine mitreissende Melodie, die wie in Zeitlupe über die gesamte Lauflänge des Tracks explodiert, dank ungemein malerischer Synthesizerklänge die auch vor radikalen Breaks nicht zurückschrecken. Währenddessen keilt die Rückseite mit einer ordentlichen Portion Rave auf dem Industrial-beeinflussten SHORTWAVE aus – erneut ein unermüdlicher Techno- Schieber zur besten Sendezeit, der sowohl monumental als auch verspielt kann.

Premiere: Christian Nielsen - For Myself [Ellum]

As head of Italian (centric) Slow Motion label (and international artist sister imprint, Wrong Era), and through his own productions and remixes, Franz Scala has been pioneering the retro-futuristic aesthetic of club culture weaving together elements of proto-house, wave and Italo for the nuovo contemporary dancefloor long before it’s current vogue. Now alongside Bordello A Parigi, and supported by Sameheads, Slow Motion presents Scala’s euphoric debut album Mondo Della Notte.

A homage to the world of the night where Franz plies his trade. Solid production and understanding of the various references informing the contemporary dancefloor imbues this set with a quality of permanence. Each track clocks-in at around the seven minute mark accommodating all Scala’s retro influences  providing the space for walls of sounds to expand and unfold along these infectious rhythm voyages.

Industrial guitars signal the title track’s intent while ethereal vocal snippets escape the machines hailing to the listener through densely effected, spacey drums blurring the boundaries between disco and wave. Stelle’s cross-continental tunnel trip takes the listener to a darkened dancefloor. Flickering light emerging by way of rapturous synths complementing each other in short radiant bursts resulting in a steady, off-kilter workout that wouldn’t sound out of place during the latter years of The Paradise Garage. Cometa’s urgency hurtles through the void towards it’s destination gaining momentum with each synth stab and chorus leaving the impression you’re listening to some long lost classic that just collided with the planet. Dreamline a rhythm dense Chicago influenced jam packed with desolate, metallic strings; whispered, twisted vox, and haunting phrases. Rising from a swamp Chrono startles the listener, the track’s infectious trippy patterns reminiscent of the hazy trance that occured when clubbing collided with guitars at the dawn of the second summer of love. Museum of Illusion comes at you like John Carpenter scoring a heavy giallo soundtrack. The artist’s trademark tough, italo-informed drum workouts are best illustrated by Scala’s rework of One Way Love. The composition’s rhythms’ morphing into a darker proto-house framework with a tougher edge than it’s previous incarnation. Gladio’s hypnotic tribute to the foundational cyber-funk of Detroit ends this trip into the nether world of strobes and speakers, a sword-edged machine conversation between a measured motor-city bass and responding off-world hardware, the tracks warm undertones taking you inwards beyond the industrial world these sounds originally emerged from.

It is a tribute to Franz’s careful, attentive approach to his love of music that, for the first time, after a decade running Slow Motion, he finally releases his own productions through his own label. Mondo Della Notte, a collection of contemporary mutations grounded in previous era’s, is the culmination and testimony to his artisanal dedication to his own creative output and his obsessive enthusiasm for what moves the dancefloor.
