For Böser Herbst, Thomas Fehlmann returns to the sediment of ages, drawing from a similar lexicon of sounds to that used on 2018’s ‘1929 – Das Jahr Babylon’. Like that album, Böser Herbst was produced as the soundtrack to a documentary made by Matthias Luthardt, ‘Herbst 1929, Schatten Über Babylon’, which offers historical insight to the third season of the television series Babylon Berlin. It adds yet another string to the bow of this most forward-thinking and creative artist, whose history takes in NDW (Palais Schaumburg), techno (3MB) and psychedelic ambience (The Orb), plus a clutch of gorgeous solo albums that explore wide terrain, from the dancefloor through supine home listening to compelling soundtrack work. Fehlmann’s approach here was to ‘capture’ samples of contemporaneous music, “picking up the dirt and dust of original 1920s archive sound and music excerpts and shaping the essence into this selection of tunes,” he recalls. After delivering the material to the editing room, Fehlmann “threw all the pieces up in the air, deliberately lost the overview in consequence, researched the atmospheric thread and assembled it for this album.” That explains the singular nature of the material here, and its ability to sit together so neatly and discretely, as its own entity. For Böser Herbst is a music box of possibilities, shadowed by its historical provenance, but never crudely beholden to it, rather “keeping the references only as a distant nod, a scent.”

It’s certainly an evocative listen, a cornucopia of textural pleasure and sensual, tactile assemblage. The spiralling, psychedelic cycle of “Karnickel” winds its way between the ears like thread to the needle; “Mit Ausblick” immerses the listener in deep, gaseous tones, only to be lifted into the air by the glassy drones of “Umarmt”. “Wunschwechsler” crackles with the unpredictability of weather systems while a guitar-like loop unspools across the horizon. Throughout, you can catch tiny tastes of the source material, but they’re pressed into greater service, Fehlmann using these sources for their evocative capacity and then saturating them with grain and rumble, abstracting outwards. It’s a music of temporal disjuncture and clairvoyant resonance, “speaking with the past – alert, distant and quixotic.”

Megan Leo is a selector based in London. She has a dance-floor-orientated sound with a focus on spacey, and hypnotic elements, moving through anything from cosmic and Balearic through to electro, acid, and percussive. 

She cut her teeth in her native north of England, playing at venues such as Cosmic Ballroom, World Headquarters, and Sankeys. She was also a resident at Ghetec which threw parties in hidden locations across Newcastle. In recent years, she has been frequenting the London circuit, playing regularly at venues like The Cause.

You can catch Megan every four weeks on Threads Radio for her radio show Swirl and this summer you can find her playing for Til Death Do Us Disco with more gigs TBA.

UK-born, Berlin-based, J.Wiltshire (Hypercolour/Super Hexagon) returns to MUSAR for a deep excursion with Planet Mu's Konx-om-Pax on remix duties.

The tracks came to fruition in Berlin during a time in society when everything was closed and there was a huge layer of uncertainty across the globe. "I was channelling my interest in the introspective side of trance and finding comfort in what I was creating. It was sort of like going back to using processes from when I first started making dance music."

With three original tracks on the EP, 'Luv 44' opens the EP with a pulsating boom-bap groove and atmospheric synth work via acidic licks from the SH-101. 'The Number Counters' boasts sporadic analogue delay with white-noise snare drums and haunting ostinatos. 'Trails' is a welcoming, sluggish roller that chugs into oblivion, making for an idyllic warm-up excerpt for the club.

On remix duties, special guest Konx-om-Pax is summoned to bring his own interpretation of 'The Number Counters'. As an artist, you may recognise Konx-om-Pax’s visuals for Warp, Mogwai, Underground Resistance, Oneohtrix Point Never, Hyperdub, Advanced Beauty and LuckyMe. Oftentimes when turning his hand to production, the Planet Mu signee develops the original elements and pushes them into new territory via a host of analogue effects chains. Among the mix is a hypnotic and continual breakbeat that dips in and out dynamically, plus a host of improvised effects that sporadically paint over the mix like a beautiful and chaotic tapestry.

Common Factors is the meeting of minds of producers James Welsh and Alexander Church. The pair, both based in rural Yorkshire, have had their fair share of individual achievements stretching back decades: Alex with his Configurations of Self imprint and output both solo and in various groups like Dronelock and Figure-Ground, and James with his long-running partnership with Phantasy Sound and work as part of post-punk group The Rise.

Like their name suggests Common Factors celebrates their combined influences, at times conjuring up an early 90s nostalgia, and their shared passion for synthesisers. The beginning of the year saw their debut release on the newly-founded sub-label of Alexander's imprint, and they're already gearing up for instalment number two in April.

We handed the reigns over to them for this week's Ransom Note mix which is a fusion of recent Common Factors productions which showcases the different sounds at the core of the project.
