Obeka - Move Like So EP (out on the 22nd of October via Basy Tropikalne)

Bermuda is a territory in the Atlantic Ocean spread across over a hundred of islands which have been luring holidaymakers for decades. More importantly though, it is a cultural melting pot with majority of population being of African descent and strong ties to the Caribbean, Great Britain, the US and Portugal being inherent in the country's past and present.

The islands are also a birthplace of Obeka (@djobeka), a young DJ and producer whose music is a perfect testament to Bermuda's Afro-Caribbean identity. Having moved to the UK aged 16, he started channeling his childhood years of absorbing the music via carnivals, handmade sound systems and riddim culture through the lens of British electronic/club music scene. The latest outcome of these experiments comes in a form of 'Move Like So EP'.

The release opens with a somewhat murky and dystopian 'Duppy Drum'. Containing a nod to Afro-Caribbean culture in its very title ('duppy' is a word of African origin widely used in Caribbean beliefs), the song features the sound of West African drums recorded live. 'Test System' - a first ever track with Obeka himself on vocals - brings surprising reminiscence of Otto von Schirach distorted voice heard on Modeselektor tracks all those years ago. To wrap things up, the title song ('Move Like So') is set at a lower tempo and has been written in a natural movement of dancehall as Obeka remembers it from back home.

Vicente Machado, DJ e produtor que reside em Porto Alegre, teve seus primeiros contatos com a música eletrônica através de festas underground de coletivos do RS. Por meio deste set, buscou criar uma narrativa intercalando entre músicas melódicas e músicas com batidas mais cruas e hipnóticas. Seu estudo musical é voltado para os gêneros Breakbeat, Electro e Miami Bass.

KIKA é DJ, curadora e produtora no selo Goma Rec., é integrante do Coletivo Arruaça e tem residência nas festas Base e HOT, em Porto Alegre-RS. É também residente no programa Téti a Téti na Rádio Veneno. Sua trajetória traz a ocupação de espaços públicos com entretenimento e maior representatividade na cena de música eletrônica. Em sua pesquisa como DJ mixa diferentes estilos que conversam de uma forma heterogênea, usando percussão, beats retos, quebrados, harmonias afetivas e timbres marcantes para buscar uma construção orgânica e diversa em seus sets, desmembrando gêneros como House, Techno, Electro, Minimal, Bass Music, UK Bass.

Já tocou em festas e clubs nacionais como CAOS, MAMBA NEGRA, 1010, Red Bull Music Festival (2018), MECA Festival, Mikatreta, Silver/tape, Dusk, ESTALADA, SKY, PLANO, dentre outros projetos. Durante a pandemia (2020-2021), foi residente do canal na Twitch da marca Pornograffitti, participando de edições online das festas CAPSLOCK e CAOS. Participou de programas em rádios de alcance internacional como Na Manteiga, ABERTA, Veneno, The Lot Radio, Radio Quântica, 1/4. Foi destaque nas mixes de fevereiro de 2021 da Mixmag Japão com o set "Haus Safado" para a plataforma Fried Jazz. Atualmente, estuda a produção musical e tem uma track lançada pelo selo Wave Live Act, chamada "vmk" e "Intrínseca" que sairá pelo selo MEGAZORD, uma junção de núcleos e selos gaúches.

"Os artistas que influenciam esse set são mis amigues e refs como BELLA, DJMTN9090, FELIX, PV5000, Baroque Angel, Joao Ka, aka Tinho, rtchad e Entropia-Entalpia, artistas independentes que criam suas identidades sonoras com referências brasileiras e latinas. Mixando com minhas pesquisas em Bass Music".
