"Going back-to-back makes sense. We live together, we really love the same music." The Berlin-based duo discuss their partnership behind the decks—and in life.

Tama Sumo and Lakuti are two of Berlin's best-known house DJs. Partners in life and in music, they've played as solo artists (and together) since the early '90s, and hold residencies at Panorama Bar. Unsurprisingly, they have an unparalleled synthesis behind the decks and in conversation, and on this unique episode of the RA Exchange, they interview each other about their formative experiences in the music industry and the roots of their respective musical practices—for Tama Sumo, the bars and lesbian weekenders in Kreuzberg, and for Lakuti, disused warehouses in Johannesburg.

They also talk about deeper, more intrinsic aspects of their crafts, their relationship, and their identities as marginalised artists navigating Germany's house and techno scene. This interview was recorded live at The Standard in London as part of the series TheirStories, an essential event In London's queer cultural calendar that platforms narratives from the LGBTQIA+ community. Kaelo Ghallagher is a Toronto based music producer and DJ since 1997. He produced amazing records under the alias JK47 among others. We are happy to share a bit of Toronto's underground club history, recorded live, un-edited, 22 years ago. 

This is a Live PA recorded in Toronto, at Breathe/System Soundbar 21 December, 2001. Using 2 Roland MC-505s and a Yamaha SU700 Sampler. 

All original Kaelo songs with the exception of “Run” written and produced by DJ Jet aka Jesse Goldfarb.

Originally from Cornwall, England, Hocking began DJing a decade ago whilst at university in Birmingham, and soon after picked up a residency at the infamous Rainbow Club. Hocking has a passion for finding hidden gems from the 90s and 00s and blending these with an array of modern electronic sounds, always sustaining a positive energy on the dancefloor. This could be anything on the electronic music spectrum from house through to trance, electro, and rave. He’s now cemented his place in Vietnam over the past 4 years, bringing this sound to clubs and events such as Savage, Electric Bazaar, (Re)Treat festival, Likdo Festival and more recently, helping form the Thêm collective, along with a close group of friends in Hanoi.

Recorded during his closing set after Dee Diggs in Savage’s Red Cube club room in December 2023. Expect a selection of club-ready cuts taking you through to the end of the night.

Anastasia K. Stoyanova aka Sia K S is a multidisciplinary storyteller. 

She dwells in liminal spaces: working at the intersection of the climate crisis and mysticism, she deploys words, music and symbols to transmute dread into hope. Forever grounded in the harsh reality we face instead of choosing escape, her electronic selections seek ascension as she lifts forms from the ever-present shadows we must befriend.

This mix was actually my submission for the 2024 Strawberry Fields x PBS 106.7FM DJ Competition.

The mix was designed to be performed in the daytime following the welcome to country.

A different style of recording with an emphasis on 'Big Room' tracks I've never had the right opportunity to share until now. Having attended Strawberry Fields many times in the past, I can easily say it remains one of my most beloved festivals I've ever had the privilege to experience. Recorded for the largest of stages, the Wildland's is a gargantuan arena with massive bass, so low frequencies and a continuous hypnotic energy are the prominent components of this mix. The recording is a slow chugging build from the start (This mix is designed to follow on from a reverential Welcome to Country Ceremony) and building through a series of these 'Big Room' tracks to a euphoric finish. There are number of important breakdowns throughout the mix to allow the energy to be sustained as well as dip into some varying drum and bass rhythms with some disco elements sprinkled in to add some variety to the genre palate.

I hope you enjoy listening to the music and that visions of the Wildlands float through your mind, as they did when I recorded the mix d-_-b

Inspired by cycling around the world, the motion, rhythm, and atmosphere of the journey are captured throughout the tracks. The culture of cycling—from the 90s to today—served as a major muse, merged with electronic sounds influenced by many of my favorite musicians. The result is a fusion of inspirations reflecting both the landscapes traveled and the evolving sonic ideas along the way.
