Shadow Realm 001 w/ Noizy Wilson [by Nu Kvlture]

Protean artist Maxwell Simons collaborates with South African producer Big Space and LA rapper Shamon Cassette on a hard-hitting footwork track, released via Milan imprint, Beat Machine Records.

Neon red and white lights scored the car’s glossy shell as it sped along the highway. He felt his lower arms begin to go numb and his nails dig into his palms has he gripped the steering wheel, watching buildings chase each other and compete for the recognition of his peripheral vision. But it didn’t even seem as if his eyes registered any of it at all. The adrenaline put him in a stupor…


 
Though almost always flavoured with hints of industrial, rap and bass, it’s hard to know exactly what to expect from Italian-Brazlian producer Maxwell Simons. His sound engineering background is reflected in a commitment to experiment with fusing electronics and samples, field recordings and live instrumentation.

His forthcoming release ‘Rua 29’ gives it to you hard and fast, shuttling between hard techno, jungle and footwork and featuring a fierce remix from London badman, Deft.

Our pick ‘In Yo Feelings (feat. Shamon Cassette)’ layers live percussion on top of a stuttering footwork rhythm and the audacious rap of Shamon Cassette. Not for the faint-hearted.

Pōneke DJ’s Jerry Watts and Kid Contra team up for ACP MX_11. This collab explores the territory carved out by Objekt’s legendary 2018 “no-kickrollers” mix for Resident Advisor. The resulting mix probes the rich intersection between UK bass, deconstructed grime, experimental techno, and contemporary IDM.

Jerry Watts is a Newtown based producer. He has recently released two tracks through the @Strange-Behaviour label, and remixed past-Taite Prize nominee @Dudley Benson. He has released on local labels since 2015. He hosts the long-running “Wingdings” show on @__mouthfull__ radio, and has featured on @Been to Berlin Once, @Friendly Potential, @Glasshalffull, @Insessionetc etc.

Kid Contra has been active since the first dubstep wave. After moving back from London, he helped form the club night and mix series @Insession to promote forward thinking/alternative/weird-ass electronic music in Pōneke. Along with @lakeboon, he is one half of Kuji, who have been tearing up the local bass scene.

Rather than mourn the death of DJ Rashad I wanted this to be a celebration of the life and legacy, to reflect the impact of such an influential and ground breaking artist that has forever changed electronic music and inspired artists all across the globe. Anyone making Juke, Footwork and/or 160 BPM adjacent music today has been affected by his music in some way, shape, or form, whether directly or indirectly no doubt.

Yet, this mix is not entirely Juke/Footwork, or even all DJ Rashad, but more so inspired by that IDGAF spirit - the very experimental nature of both his music and Juke as a whole in which you can also hear so many different influences from across genres. This mix itself being very much a multi genre mashup with unique tracks of unabashed creativity.
