AN ATLAS OF LOSS

Do minerals dream of becoming semiconductors? Do they yearn to carry charges, amplify, switch, and convert energy into emotions comprehensible to humans? And what if, from the darkness of the underground, they had been listening to us sing in caves before the emergence of the first flute? Could they have guided us, through the course of history, to find them, extract them, and create new sounds through sinusoidal waves, to form valves and bend circuits?


If so, minerals would transition from what philosopher Eugene Thacker defines as the ‘planet’—that virginal and unreachable realm for humans that we study through geology, paleontology, and environmental sciences—to the ‘world,’ the space we inhabit, interpret, and synthesise in our daily lives. Sadly, we only remember the world when it erupts violently, through climate catastrophes or when a new virus emerges. Sometimes a tsunami collides with a nuclear plant, or viruses are cultivated as biological weapons in high-security laboratories, provoking a deep biological anxiety, hard to quell, which we all feel beneath our skin.

There exists a third realm, disconnected from both the world and the planet: the ‘earth’, an immense, dense rock floating in space alongside other planets, situated in the cosmological dimension. Relating to the earth is so complex that we only do so through theoretical speculations of a scientific nature or through science fiction, interweaving until one becomes the prophecy of the other, in an infinite, pendular dance. Beyond the darkness of space and Lovecraft’s cosmic horror, the fantasy of human extinction is the most recurrent: to reach a collapse so devastating that we do not survive it, even though the earth does, without us.

In a world where we quantify everything through body sensors, financial algorithms, nanometre-scale robots, and surveillance drones—a world in which everything that can be domesticated and controlled can also be commodified—a superior artificial intelligence would survive the collapse of the species (some speculate it might even cause it) and learn from our mistakes, thanks to our obsessive gathering of data.

Long after our voices fade, minerals will persist in the darkness of screens, in the silicon of chips, and in their pure form, still unexploited underground. Over the millennia, this intelligence might piece together fragments of our reasoning, as if an alien civilization finally connected with one of our spacecrafts loaded with messages cast into the void. It would sort through endless streams of data, unable to grasp the depths of emotion behind what it quantified, recreating simulations of our past, stripped of the nuance that once defined us and conducting experiments in sandboxes.

Some remnants of our existence—faint echoes of forgotten beauty—would be pieced together in an atlas of loss, buried beneath layers of numbers, decayed bots, and corroded hard drives. What will follow? Perhaps bison will once again roam—trotting to the strange pulse of techno, their ancient forms framed by the ruins of our cities. Buildings will crumble, slowly dissolving under the soft touch of ambient music, and a thousand flowers will bloom with that ancient music created through electrical signals and computation.

TURBO 173 - PERTH DRUG LEGEND - Bliss & Envy: Halfers on a Fishbowl

One half of Scottish duo Clouds, Perth Drug Legend tear off a solo EP of rugged, apocalyptic bloke-techno.

What more can be said about Clouds, young prodigies who have put out as much innovative techno in the past few years than anyone. The story takes a twist with a wealth of material being released by PDL, hot off a remix of Tiga’s Bugatti and releases on Resin and Westend Communications. The sound is reminiscent of Ghost Systems Rave, but there’s the feeling that things have gotten even more refined, something that smacks of a real subcultural movement.

Opener Balquhidder Ruins is a stomping gate-crasher, the tempo pulled back just enough to feel the grit of industrial funk, everything restrained to it’s bare essentials.

Today marks the dawn of a new era in the politics world and 2016 saw monumental shifts in how the world is shaping up for the future. Inspired by a atmosphere of desperation, frustration and a lack of hope we went to music to seek solace, inspiration and a reminder of the incredible things humans are able to do if they are open minded, work together, cross borders and get creative.

Mare Insularum translates as Sea of Dreams and also the name of one of the moon's many seas. In line with our collective, Shika Shika's, vision, the album not only showcases music that blurs borders and genres, seeking inspiration from past and present, but also music that offers hope, escape, inspiration...

Despite these shifts and the apparent slide into a dangerous new world, at Shika Shika we also believe 2017 is going to be a year of resistance and of hope in every corner of the globe. We believe in the power of music and we believe in the power of collaboration.

Cara Sur es el primer LP de Derrok lanzado bajo el alero de Nómade, este release propone un viaje musical completo desde el primer Track hasta el onceavo, con momentos de misterio que se revelan a lo largo del disco.

Sonidos de la naturaleza: la fuerza del trueno, la libertad de las Turcas que cantan desenvueltas, se funden de una manera sutil y orgánica con beats lentos propios del House. Un trabajo que destaca por su dinamismo y progresión, con dos tracks introductorios y tres tracks finales que dejan claro un mensaje de paz. Un mapa con la ruta hacia la tranquilidad del alma que solo puede darse en los bosques, en la vida silvestre, lejos de la urbe, de los semáforos silenciosos que dirigen un tránsito sin sentido.

Derrok construye un puente sonoro que vincula a quien escucha con las raíces de nuestra América indómita. Le da sonido a una caravana gitana y latina que avanza en busca del rescate de los ritualitos, que llenan el espíritu de viajeros de todo el globo, aportando a un cambio de mira, a un cambio de paradigma sonoro y social, menos competitivo y mas colaborativo.

Temas como “Recuerdos” con Vruno y “Dueños de la cima” con Rodrigo Gallardo, hablan del poder del trabajo en conjunto, de la fuerza que toma la música cuando es compartida. El sonido del charango acompañado de sintetizadores armónicos permite una gama de matices silvestres y vanguardistas, que te llevan directo a los bosques del sur.

Su música es una pócima dulce que se revuelve al ritmo aproximado de los 100bpm, invitándote a un baile que más parece una aventura por un sendero milenario. Te mueves como avanzando entre ramas, saltando troncos y esquivando telarañas, sin dejar huella, invitado por duendes y seres mitológicos australes. Su ritmo va dejando pausas para que respires y vuelvas con mas fuerza a moverte – tú - todo rama de Coigüe, que se balancea al compás de un temporal de viento que sopla desde la Cara Sur.

Multi Culti’s lucid-lifestyle dreamer Peter Power takes us on a free-wheeling trip to the motherland on AFRO DAMBA.

The Irish-born Voodoohop resident has returned from the jungles of Bahia with a fresh ep of primal party tracks sampling voices and rhythms from across Africa and it’s neighbouring islands, producing what is easily his most club-oriented work to date. Whereas his tracks for Voodoohop were spiritual flute-heart-openers, these are neo-pagan mating-ritual floor-fillers. The rhythm is set to tribal chug, with rollicking percussion, reverb-soaked vocals, and all the fun jangly bells & bits you expect to be hanging off such a well-traveled producer.

If that weren’t enough, we enlisted Romanian-dance-duo Khidja to double-down and remix both Adama Waro and Dansakoni (available as a digital-exclusive). Resident mix-lord Dreems also weighs in with a subtle remix of Dansakoni, gently upping the tempo and tweaking the knobs in selfless service of the original groove.

After two months of the resourceful EP "O Futuro do Passado" presented by the Portuguese duo Ohxalá (@ohxala), we are delighted to release this remix EP. The duo consciously selected collaborations with diverse artists, which gave a gripping mystery as the four remixes resonate sequentially. The raw nature and essence from the original EP remain, and beforehand we all gain accurate and vigorous remixes.

"Ovoavoa" gains an elegant and delicate version proposed by Thommie G. The second track is a remix of "Ossâim" delivered by our dearly beloveds Maracuyá & Nillo, the track was celestially reconfigured.  Under the unique and vibrant perspective of Dandara, "Urubu Violeta" gains a toned delirious. Finishing the selection, a second remix of "Ossâim" was born in MiRET's hands, he spared no effort to remix a devastatingly consistent track.

As always we are targeting slow pace feelings - which certainly does not lack when dealing with this remix EP. These 27min filtered onto four gold-coated interpretations are one of our emphatic invitations in order to you explore and discover the mysteries that surround downtempo's independent music scene. Reflect upon the past, look at the future, the future in the past is always an interim report.

03 Inti Nahual - Ayú.

Márcio Pinto is a Portuguese musician with a degree in Classical Percussion who is also a member of several well known Portuguese bands. 

Passionate about exotic and tribal rhythms, Márcio has travels extensively to Western Africa in search of knowledge about traditional percussion from the region and he has a special interest in the balophone. 

Inspired by the balophone, universally known as the marimba, Márcio created MaguPi, an electroacoustic project inspired by African sounds and rhythms. 


Pai Changa: 

A Mandingue rhythm from the western coast of Africa reimagined by a classical percussionist. The voices convey human liberation through ancestral plants used by indigenous peoples. 

O Ritual: 

In "O Ritual," the voices, recorded by MaguPi, provide the initial theme upon which the rest of the song is based. Various cultures are united in this song: Arabic, Latin-American, African, and its conception arose in ritual form.

I’ve returned to Jaran’s to play another “Tribal Devotion” set.

I usually play a slower "Snake Charmer" edition of Ecstatic Dance, and there are many tracks that i can't play there and I miss playing.

Thus i'm happy to hold "Tribal devotion" and include some of these tracks.

This has been one of my most intense sets yet, I had a great time and heard great responses from our lovely participants. 

Highlights of this journey:

- A high-energy duet of Sitar and piano
- Deep house, Techno and Psy Trance within 10 minutes
- Polish and Bulgarian folk with beats
- Amazonian, Indian, Latin, Arabic, Brazilian, Mongolian, Javanese and other cultures

I enjoy creating different journeys for every event -  Most of these tracks I played for the 1st time, and only a few I played previously.
