"Palo Alto" is the first single taken from Southern Shores' debut LP, Loja, out on Cascine September 2nd. 

Southern Shores are one of Cascine's earliest acts, having helped define the label's windswept aesthetic with two acclaimed releases – the Atlantic EP in 2011, and the New World EP in 2012. 

After taking four years to themselves, Toronto's summer heroes return with Loja, their debut long player. Loja is a reflection on travel and its ability to unlock a larger worldview. Now more than ever, an equally expansive and inclusive vantage point is crucial. The music of Southern Shores has always pulled from a global, but deliberately unspecific, set of reference points – rhythmic music that speaks to producers Jamie and Ben at an intuitive level. 

Loja also represents a focus on what’s natural, a stripping away of everything nonessential to allow the best ideas to develop themselves. This approach is made clear in their creative process about which they share, “producing electronic music, there’s often a danger of being sucked in by the possibilities of our technology – but it's an empty promise in the end. More equipment, more effects, more gadgetry never makes our music better. We started down this dangerous road without realizing it and had to consciously pull ourselves back into the realm of the real. An idea must speak to us from the beginning – it needs to have soul and a voice of its own.”

Loja takes the best of what the Shores have always done well and imbues it with even more finesse and maturity. Focus tracks “Palo Alto” and “Riders” showcase the album’s subtle confidence – above a lush bed of live and electronic percussion drift occasional vocal samples, well-placed horns and piano keys. Initially, the album was going to be released as one long-running track, but at the last minute it was re-sequenced to allow the songs space to shine on their own. The end result is a record that sidesteps grand statements to deliver a listen that’s gentle and transportive.

Loja is set for release September 2 on Southern Shores' longtime label home, Cascine.

Lonely Or Alone

Set for release via FatCat Records tomorrow, C Duncan’s highly anticipated third album sees the Scottish multi-instrumentalist ditch his bedroom studio and work with other producers, engineers and musicians for the first time. Warm and harmonically rich, Duncan delightfully juxtaposes the vibrant and wholesome aesthetic of the album with an often-darker lyrical undertone, pushing himself to refine and explore new ways of writing. As the sole protagonist of his self-carved niche, ‘Health’ sees Duncan evolve and expand its parameters in mesmerising fashion.

The album’s first single ‘Impossible’ was released in January, with Duncan combining strings and oddball psychedelic sounds. Next up, the title tracks syncopated piano rhythm and brooding vocal harmonies were reminiscent of the ‘The Midnight Sun’s’ soothing aural beauty. Last but by no means least, Duncan documents the trials of rebuilding fractured relationships on the rhythmic art-funk of new single ‘Talk Talk Talk.’ He had this to say on it:

“‘Talk Talk Talk’ about miscommunication. It’s about not realising that you’re actually on the same page as someone and how a misperception can drive you apart. However, it’s also about realising this and rebuilding bridges.”

Following the Mercury nominated debut ‘Architect’ (2015,) an it’s impressive follow up ‘The Midnight Sun’ (2016,) ‘Health’s’ soaring tapestries achieve what Duncan set out to. “With album 3 I wanted to take a more direct approach, adding even more layers but thematically and lyrically laid bare. Having someone else to bounce production ideas off was really eye-opening for me. In the past I had been very controlling about how everything would sound but ‘Health’ really showed me the benefit of working with others and made the whole process much less isolating,” he explains. Packed with fresh ideas and buzzing with invention, ‘Health’ combines syncopated art-pop piano rhythms with breezy, undulating heartbreak ballads executed with acute precision. As always Duncan has contributed all the artwork surrounding the release, and the colourful and natural aesthetic is reflected in the instrumentation and lyrics.
