underground tech and nu style beats

I first properly met Phil back in early 2016 when he came to my old flat on Peckham Rye to interview me for XLR8R. The whole experience was both charming and professional and the end result was very high quality. It happily remains my only official piece of press to this date.

Little did I know Philip Kearney was due to metamorphose into KRN: core member of Berlin’s infamous Ghost crew, leading unearther of skewed house and the undisputed Podcast King of the New Generation. It’s a big pleasure to host him for the second Marginal Mix. Charming, professional and very high quality.

Solid Steel (16th September) Our guest in Hour 1 is J. Albert, aka Jiovanni Nadal, a fast rising producer & DJ who hails from South Florida, currently based in Queens in the United States and part of a loosely related crew that includes previous guest Anthony Naples. He co-founded Exotic Dance records with Person Of Interest and though he only first emerged in 2015 he has already made a big impression on those in the know. As well as releasing on his own label, he has been tapped up by Lovers Rock, Cult Trip and Black Opal, amongst others, for a fine and busy run of EPs that show he has real breadth and depth in the studio. He had this to say about his mix;

For this years spring´s edition of the Lab Experience podcast series Audio Werner (Hartchef, Perlon) took a deep dive into his record shelves and created a special seasonal blend of Vinyl only. This is definitely not a dedicated club mix rather than an audible illustration of springtime slowly taking over from cold and dark winter. Starting with atmospheric ambient sounds, warm rhodes & loose soundscapes the journey continues to more rhythmical environments as springtime progresses. If you expect the usual Audio Werner you know from his DJ sets or productions get ready for a completely new experience – it´s all broken beats and you won´t find any 4 to the floor bassdrum here at all. My love of music runs deep and is influenced by the mood and current events.  I flip from old school blues and jazz, ska, soul and funk beats into hip hop, breaks, lounge, drum and bass, electro beats, detroit, tech house, deep house before retreating back to electro dub, deep dub techno, dub, reggae and roots.

I have always enjoyed a healthy appetite for ska, reggae, dancehall, dub and dance tunes from listening to pirate radio in London in the 1980s (Horizon, LWR, JFM to name a few) then stir in a large dollop of electro, hip hop, funk, soul before we started moving into acid house, house and jungle/drum and bass beats through the late 80s-early 90s where every weekend we were out with DJs Micky Finn and DJ Hype up and down the length and breadth of the country at numerous clubs and events listening and dancing to the latest tuuunes.

The deep affection for more natural rhythms in funk, blues, intelligent jazzy beats and soul, funk and spoken word and opera is counter balanced by my deep love of electronic music from minmal beats, tech house, electro dub, deep dub techno  style beats, dub, breaks and even hard rock
