In ‘A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System’ five future-facing fusions of devilish drum programming with original synthesis and field recordings mark out Kop-Z as one to watch for anyone not already keeping a keen ear on the guy who’s maybe best known as one of The White Hotel’s reliable sound engineers. A pivotal cog in the TWH machine since it re-opened after lockdown in 2021, Kop-Z has arguably become its mutant poster-child, embodying the Salford venue’s dare-to-differ steez and naturally experimental bent in his uniquely warped, heavily club-focussed productions. 

Raised in Salford and based in the gooch of Moss Side/Rusholme, Kop-Z makes mesmerising music that draws on his Kenyan heritage as much as Manchester’s modernity, splicing his daily practice of observant field recording with mind and body-bending rhythms to give his music a playfully heavy sense of psychogeography and ravishing rhythmic psychedelia. Hyperlocal yet omnivorous in outlook, Kop-Z deploys a rushing flux of flavour and pressure that speaks directly to the madness of the mid 2020s from his unique perspective.

Under a title cadged from a book in a junk shop, Kop messes with ideas of entropy and accelerationism in its complex organisation and disruption of logic. Around a relatively lush but haunting centrepiece wormhole of half step pulses and swarming, headless voices in ‘If I’, he balances the wildness with an emotionally intelligent bias that inflects the cold rush and lash of ‘Ape Essence’ with a sensuous pathos, whilst his canny ear for sampling the texture and spirit of his locale lends deliciously alien frissons of humanity to ‘Eat Go Shop’ and ‘Remote Actions on a Non-Linear Path’, which both take well over 8mins to unfold intricate, abstract narratives ripe for the club as much as headphone absorption.

A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System

As you may know, especially those who attended my presentation at the Digita Ngeche launch event back in August.

For most of my life, I've lived between worlds. My Mum is from Kenya, and my Dad is from England. I grew up in the working-class outskirts of Salford but spent most of my adolescence in middle-class suburbia. This created much confusion as I grappled with contradiction, misunderstanding, and prejudice.

My heritage brought societal, financial, and emotional trials and tribulations. I had to cultivate strength, persistence, and a thirst for learning to overcome these hurdles.
Music and art were key driving factors in building this strength. They allowed me to perceive the world, its realities, and the intertwining connections that unite us as a species, regardless of the borders and barriers manufactured between us.

Even with these tools, these issues can be extremely problematic. They can cause a break within the self, leaving you feeling estranged and downtrodden. However, through learning and exposure to the universal language we call expression, these fault lines can be healed.

The last time I left the UK, I was 11 years old. I visited the coastal area of Kenya. This was one of the only times I met that side of my family, and it gave me a glimpse into what makes me, me.

Now, I have the chance to return. In 13 days, I am traveling to Kampala, Uganda, to live and create at the Nyege Nyege Studios, participating in their artist residency. This will lead to a performance at the festival at the mouth of the River Nile. 

Following this, I will journey to Kisumu in Western Kenya to live with my uncle. This is where my mother is from, the place of my Luo ancestry, a place that makes me who I am, but a place I have only been able to visit in stories and dreams.

I plan to document this entire trip to learn about my family and ancestors, Luo artistic and spiritual traditions, and the history of the land and its people. This is the start of a lifelong journey for me. To build a transcontinental bridge, linking sounds and styles, starting in my twin homelands.

Over the past 8 months, I have been working hard to make this trip a reality, funding much of it through hard work, dedication, and the support of those close to me. Now, in these final stages before I set off, I have compiled an album with works spanning the vast majority of my musical expeditions and explorations, ranging from lost projects and modern loops to live improv excerpts and stuff that would probably never have been finished.

Kop-Z’s “Fading Light Above Us All” is centered on four breakbeat driven drum and bass tracks. The compositions are layered like ambient works including the one non-dnb track, “Feel Lost.”

“Feel Lost” opens with bright noise and rumbling sub frequencies like a forgotten microphone left recording. This freeform piece shows patience with infrequent industrial noises swelling up over the noise and then disappearing again.

The dnb tracks highlight one or two well known breaks, glitched and edited into fragments. The two step “Should U Stay” stands out by layering drums in a late 90s Tech Step way. The drums and bass lines are treated as layers in the collection of atmospheres (not as the singular focal points). Some layers are in the foreground, but many sit content in the background developing imagery of different spaces or times. The tones creating a feeling of urgency or forlorn are balanced by choir-like swells and uplifting harmonies. And yet reverb can make even these ethereal elements feel a bit ghostly.

Kop-Z first heard the term "A Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamic System" in a book he found in an old junk shop in Manchester city centre for 2 quid. Its describes humans as systems constantly battling the entropy and world’s challenges around us in order to survive:

"Whilst this is true, we are also systems that work together. We think, learn, grow, and create beautiful things like art and music. I love this contrast. There are many similar contrasts in the spaces we inhabit: day and night, love and hate, going to bed at 9 p.m. or 9 a.m.”

He articulates this contrast by juxtaposing vignettes of human life with unrelentingly kinetic probability programming systems. Autobiographical field recordings, manually looped vinyl and childhood video games melt into psychedelic waves of sub-focussed pressure.
Throughout the record, these themes are engaged by a psyche imprinted by influences such as jungle, footwork, noise, rave, post punk, reggae, the Curry Mile and a river in the Peak District. This results in an auditory fabric that interlocks contrasting physical and digital systems across temporal contexts. Rejoicing in the expression of lived human experience, whilst surrendering to the chaos of the machine.

Comprising of demos sent to PCMS over the last year, Pinecone Moonshine's "Aspects" continues where 2022's "Facets" left off – showing many sides or methods to rhythm in the PCMS style. Building the album was a process of selecting tracks that progressed well while showing variety.

And so "Aspects" covers a range of approaches to drum and bass rhythm. Similar musical keys and ambient backdrops connect the tracks. Long-time PCMS contributor Fushara starts the album off with his signature, natural sounding drum kits. Healing Force Project and Dot Notation lean into chopping breakbeats. Brad Impact's "Do or Die" sits somewhere between drumfunk and techstep. Kop-Z melds a techno 4/4 approach with 170 bpm. Jiva and Kodama (Acid Lab) both use synthetic percussion with Kodama going so minimal that the LP ends with rhythmic ambient music.
