A special mixtape for Push it Radio recorded on the occasion of my guest gig in Netherlands on PUSH IT party with Pushin Woods in a cult club - Vera Groningen - 19.11.2022.

Turkish Ladies - Miss Turkey 1970 - 1984

The summer was gorgeous this year; we were blessed with a decent amount of sun, which made everything glow with saturated colours and vibrating air. Nature, landscapes and people could reveal their beauty.

I was lucky this summer to celebrate a genuine union of people, music and nature in La Clusaz at Le Champ des Platines of Radio Meuh. The majestic mountains welcomed and embraced us, allowing to enjoy the beautiful day at l’alpage de l’Étale - the pasture covered with a soft carpet of a fresh grass. The lovely people who climbed to dance with us brought so much love. We danced till everything melted in the golden light of sunset.

The recording of my 3-hour-long set brought all the sensations back, and I am again at l’alpage de l’Étale. Thank you for the love and care you gave to us.

The grass in the pasture will grow healthier this year. The cows will be happier, and Reblochon will get even tastier. A bientôt les amis!

Ciak 2024 - International Women's Day

LoR Guest Mix series is made with love and empowered by the concept of sisterhood. Contributors are the women of music, DJs, producers, selectors who actively redefine music environment.

The premiere mix comes from a wonderful Istanbul based artist - Ahu. An RBMA alumni, cooperated with Flying Lotus (Roberta Flack), Mr. Beatnick, Emanative, Miles Bonny and many more. She is a frequent guest at the best music festivals - Barcelona Sonar, Southern Soul Festival, Jazzystan, Brainfeeder, Worldwide Festival Sete  and clubs like Plastic People, Boiler Room London, Baltic Room, East Village, Trinity, Nectar and Gilles Peterson’s World Wide Awards.  Her single "Go" came out in July 2019 from Sony Music. She hosted a radio show on worldwide Fm called "Hour of Light " for 6 years with many guests from all over the world. Ahu released her solo  album "Stellar" from Mythstery Records London, in November 2023, called Stellar, "Stellar" got great reviews by many DJs and also played on radios like BBC, FIP and KEXP.

We are welcoming Carla Schack from a digger duo Batukizer, with her outstanding mixtape which sheds the light on the women's contribution to the Brazilian music scene.

Carla was born & raised Brazilian and her electronic DJ sets draws on references specially from Latin America and the African continent condensed into high energy electronic and groove dance music. She is a part of the dj duo Batukizer, early known under the label "Epic Vinyls from Brazil", who are world renowned for exposing Brazilian music. She’s also an active part of the Future Female Sounds NGO, as a DJ instructor and performer, providing exquisite and flavored DJ sets.

What an enjoyment to play vinyl-only set again! 
On a Sunday morning, I picked some of my records and started to play a set in my music room. The process was so pleasant and joyful that I decided to  press "REC" button to keep those moments for future. I spontaneously chose the records I had not listened for quite a long time. It felt very natural as nothing was planned in advance - neither the selection nor the time, the concept, the goal... The Sunday Vinyl Picking came out to be a session of music from vinyl that crossed borders and spanned decades - from the vast territory (also imaginary one) of Middle East and Mediterranean region. It is light, eclectic and groovy as this Sunday morning.

The truth is that the more I play digital sets, the more I enjoy playing vinyl for myself. It feels like to be back to where it all started for me.

Together with Ana Flavia and Ahu we united to create a series of parties called Dan Agogo. Our first official show took place in Istanbul. We had one of those unforgettable nights, when every song and every dance was bringing us closer to Brazil - the home of Ana Flavia and Ahu's and mine's imaginary musical paradise.

It is Sunday Vinyl Picking time! Again, I found it very joyful to play a vinyl-only set, pick some records without a direction, push the record button and go with the flow. 

This time I chose some beautiful records from my “new arrivals” shelf, some I just took out from my record bag and unpacked after the recent show, and others were just the ones that were still scattered around after a listening session at home.

Turkish Ladies 1970 -1977 is a 2nd mixtape from Ladies on Records made exclusively of Turkish women music from 70s. All vinyl live mixtape consists of selected tunes I have discovered while being here in Istanbul. My research is based on digging in music and exploring histories of female musicians and singers. The goal is to understand more of the times, aesthetics, social and cultural patterns and circumstances of creation of women music in 60s and 70s.

1970-1977 is the best period of Turkish music and culture history in 20th century. Time of freedom, dreaming and making big dreams come true. Enjoy selection of songs from poetic singers of the beginning of 70s to arabesk disco/ funky queens of dance floors of late 70s.

On the day of Turkish Ladies compilation's official release date (May 11, 2018) I prepeared a special mix for London based NTS Radio. What a celebration of the "Turkish Ladies. Female Singers from Turkey 1974 - 1988"!!!
Selection of various songs from Turkey late 70s and 80s. From pop-rock of 70s to disco of early 80s. The set consist of 3 tracks from "Turkish Ladies" compilation. Most of the tracks are super fresh and were never part of any of my previous mixtapes. It seems like this adventure will never end - beautiful singers and exciting tracks are still waiting to be discovered <3

Turkish Ladies for Sofa Records Lyon

Due to Corona virus pandemy all the festivals and music events got cancelled starting from March 2020. We all stayed home and practiced social distancing as much as possible. 
I made a vinyl-only mixtape for Radio Meuh Circus Festival from my home, imagining that I am in La Clusaz and playing for the Festival crowd.

Home Studio Session for Radio Meuh Circus Festival 2020

After in-depth research and exploration of Turkish female singers, I am happy to dive into the enormous legacy of female singers from the Arab world. The focus on the region has been part of my Turkish journey, from where many female singers from the 60s and 70s took inspiration. Arrangements of Lebanese and Egyptian songs represent a vast part of the Turkish repertoire.  The selection of the songs from those amazing female singers from Tunisia, Lebanon, and Egypt is my personal and intimate choice. 

The artists presented in the selection come from various backgrounds. Some of them were shining stars of the Arab world, while some of them languished in obscurity. This small anthology is my modest homage to all of them.

Naama, whose song is an opener of the selection, was an acknowledged Tunisian singer, performing on stage until the 90s. Fairuz, who needs no introduction, was a major and unbeaten competitor for many other singers from all the Middle Eastern countries. Salwa Al Katrib was a rewarded Lebanese singer and actress, recognized mostly for her acting career. Magida El Roumi – a generation younger than Fairuz, got recognition as a 14 years old girl singing Fairuz’s and Oum Kulthum's songs.  Her brilliant musical career was credited to a skillful mix of pop and classical music. The case of Samira Tewfiq, who emigrated from Lebanon, sheds some light on the domination of Fairuz and Sabah on the Lebanese music scene in the 70s. Eventually, Samira got recognition mostly for her unique Beduine style and got remembered as the most popular Jordanian artist. Egyptian singer - Charifa Fadel is one of the most recognized. Her musical background is linked to the traditional and religious singing, which she successfully developed into a courageous and very feminine style, also represented by Layla Nazmi – another Egyptian female star. The story of Oulaya – an iconic Tunisian singer delivers many insights into the history of a border crossing Arabic music of the past decades. Sisters - Chedlia et Mahbouba Bouzaïane, performing under the stage name Zina et Aziza – got recognized in Tunisia not only as folk singers but mostly as very successful belly dancers. Souad Mahasen – the iconic Tunisian singer found her musical identity in the traditional Bedouin music. Another Lebanese singer of Syrian origin – Dahouk and a couple of the singers presented in the selection seemed to be forgotten. Even though they created beautiful music, their names faded away. Aida Chair and Najia Abdallah! I hope to come back to Tunisia as soon as possible to ask about you everywhere I can.

*All the songs are recorded straight from the vinyl in a live set. I hope you don't mind the quality in 2 of the tracks. I wanted to share with you those fantastic songs despite the scratches and clicks.

THE STORY BEHIND THE MIXTAPE:

The Polish music scene in the 70s and 80s was thriving, despite the harsh and gloomy political and social reality. Until the beginning of the 80s, the iron curtain seemed to be extraordinarily hermetic. However, artists and ordinary people succeeded in finding blind spots of the system throughout the decades. Forbidden music genres, unreachable instruments, banned products of western pop-culture leaked into the artistic environment and everyday life to some extent. Synthesizers, Moog, Rhodes organs found its way to fit into the local music. Funk, disco, and groovy rock took over the Polish music scene with an impressive female singers' contribution. The eclectic and progressive sound of Polish music from the late 70s and 80s got its widespread recognition thanks to the extraordinary female voices such as Ewa Bem, Krystyna Prońko, Zdzisława Sośnicka, Mira Kubasińska, to name a few. The curated mixtape "The Polish Ladies on Records" sheds some light on a few acknowledged and lesser-known singers with a special spotlight on their forgotten or overlooked songs. The distance of more than 40 years gives us a chance to listen to the songs with a universal perspective, with a knowledge of global trends and local limitations of the era. 

The mixtape is created in a collaboration with The Polish Institute in Tel Aviv, whose mission is to present the Polish heritage worldwide, especially in Israel. Glad to see the Polish female singers from the 70s and 80s are chosen to be the ambassadors of the case.
