When you say you're falling in love with someone, what really is happening is that, in that person's presence- you have brought to the surface your best self. You are actually feeling the best about yourself than you ever have. Who you really love to a much greater extent now is yourself, but we project it and attach it onto the person we believe allowed us to connect with ourselves on our deepest level. That's why (romantic) love is actually egotistical, and so when that person for whatever reason is no longer around we'd feel heart break, it is because we feel we have lost our best self and our best ability to connect with and love ourselves, all because we have accredited it to that person. Thus the secret is to learn to love oneself unconditionally and not need another (the love of our lives) to enable us. Then when we do find that person that we may want to spend the rest of our life with it is not because we need them like we need a drug, or would feel lost without them but because it is so much more real then that. Ego is the enemy. relinquish that and you will always find unconditional love every where you look.
