Aether (2021) for ensemble

Aether is the material that fills the region of the universe. According to ancient traditions, aether was the fifth element, besides fire, air, water and earth from which cosmos is created. While the other four elements structure the human word, aether believed that was structuring the sky, the planets and the stars. 

The work aspires to represent the feeling of transitioning from a world of shadows to one where everything is clear and full of light. Every kind of transition is inseparable from time. Through time we understand the changes we constantly undergo, sometimes are real and sometimes not. This piece is trying to depict the feeling of a process which leads either to light or to darkness.

L’etere è il materiale che riempie la regione dell’universo. Secondo le antiche tradizioni, l’etere era il quinto elemento, oltre al fuoco, all’aria, all’acqua e alla terra da cui è stato creato il cosmo. Mentre gli altri quattro elementi strutturano la parola umana, si credeva che l'etere strutturasse il cielo, i pianeti e le stelle. 

L’opera ’Aether’ aspira a rappresentare la sensazione di transizione da un mondo di ombre a uno dove tutto è chiaro e pieno di luce. Ogni tipo di transizione è inseparabile dal tempo. Attraverso il tempo campiamo i cambianeti che subiamo costatemente, a volte sono reali e a volte no. Questo pezzo sta cercando di rappresentare la sensazione di un processo che porta o alla luce o all’oscurità.

Following the series of my aquatic pieces, “Apnea” (in latin “absence of breathing”) for string orchestra, written during the pandemic winter, reflects the importance of breathing whilst exploring the physical and emotional transformation during the immersion under the water. The macro form of the composition reminds of a very long breath-in and a gradual breath-out stretching the time in between while continuing to delay the climax and increase the tension until the limits. The orchestra is playing without any pause taking both the players and listeners through the existential odyssey.

Simian Complex is a title that tries to illustrate through its musical context the simian complexity. 

Simians combine high levels of intelligence and emotional ability which co-work towards survival. Duende represents the intelligence and the almost magical ability of these species and Dipolar represents the emotional fight that makes every decision more difficult and unpredictable.

Brutum Fulmen aims to describe a situation which is not stable and not easy to control. Nevertheless every situation is constructed by a beginning, a middle part and an ending section. Finally we understand the nature of this situation which is harmless or with other words an empty threat (brutum fulmen).

Composer and member of the Greek Composers' Union, born in 1994 in Athens, Greece. After graduating as a theatrologist from the University of Peloponnese Faculty of Fine Arts, Theatre Department, and receiving specialized diplomas in Advanced Music Theory, Harmony and Counterpoint, he began studying composition at Utrecht Conservatorium (BA), Universität der Künste Berlin (Erasmus) and Royal Conservatory of the Hague (MA). At the moment, he is a postgraduate student at Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Graz (KUG) under the guidance of Franck Bedrossian. He has also attended masterclasses and lectures by G. Aperghis, S. Gervasoni, C. Ianotta, Y. Robin, F. Filidei, Y. Maresz, R. Cendo, E. Reiter, G. Spiropoulos, H. Parra, M. Lanza, J. M. Staud, O. Bianchi, B. Pierluigi, and D. Kourliandski, among others.

He has received commissions and performances from ensembles, orchestras, venues and institutions such as Philharmonie de Paris, Berliner Philarmoniker, Carnegie Hall, Fondazione I Teatri di Reggio Emilia, GMEM - Centre national de création musicale Marseille, Residentie Orkest, Gaudeamus, November Music, Grachtenfestival, Alexandrinsky Theatre and ARCo, while also has been collaborating with ensembles like Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble Multilatérale, Les Metaboles, Ensemble Fractales, Divertimento Ensemble, PHACE, Trio Estatico, Ensemble Taller Sonoro, Ensemble U:, Cikada, Meitar Ensemble, Ensemble NOMAD, Ensemble, Roadrunner Trio, United Instruments of Lucilin, TACETi, Ensemble Suono Giallo, Kaaos Ensemble, Vertixe Sonora, GAMEnsemble, ARTéfacts ensemble, Ensemble Terrible, Phoenix and KamerOrkest Driebergen.

His musical focus centers on the concepts of deviation, instability, interruption, and interference. Exploring the intricacies of time and its perceptions, he weaves together elements such as form, micro-material, rhythm, and sonority in his artistic exploration. Drawing inspiration from poetry, painting, philosophy, and the ancient essence of language, his compositions venture into the ethereal and fluid plasticity of sound. He explores the interplay between technology and the essence of sound, composing for acoustic instruments, vocals, and electronics, while collaborating in multidisciplinary projects.

His works have been heard in international festivals such as Gaudeamus (NL), Rainy Days (LUX), Ostrobothnian Contemporary Music Festival (FI), November Music (NL), Remus Georgescu International Music Festival (RO), The 21st Century Guitar Conference (USA), Grachten Festival (NL), Rondò 2023 (IT), UNK New Music Festival (USA), VIII St. Petersburg New Music Festival (RUS), ilSUONO Contemporary Music Week (IT), ARCO (AT), IYCA Ticino (CH), CEME (IL), Roadrunner Academy (NL), Mixtur Festival (ES), Curs Internacional de Composició Barcelona Modern" 7th Edition (ES), VII International Workshop for Young Composers (IT), isaMasterclass (AT), CML (CY) and Vienna Summer Music Festival (AT).

He had collaborated with choreographers, artists, theatre groups, collectives and companies such as ‘Imitating the Dog’, ’Theatre of Experience’ and ‘Thingamajig’ by composing original music for ‘Old Times’ by Harold Pinter, ‘The Dance of Death’ by A. Strindberg’ and ‘ASTYlogia’ by N. Fytas among others.

His music has received premieres and performances in France, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Estonia, Norway, Czech Republic, Spain, Greece, Cyprus, Ukraine, Israel, China, United States, Thailand, Russia and Canada.
