hymn (for ambroży) was written for final bachelor exam of a dear friend of mine ambro golachowski and was a certain type of musical portrait of him, as well as an auto-confrontation with my own cultural background. The piece is based on a 19th-century poem by Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmayer called ‘Song for Nirvana’. hymn uses modal harmony and renaissance-sounding chant, which reminiscens the songs usually sung in Polish catholic church. Catholic modality, although spiritually distant to me, carries a specific sentimentality which is omnipresent in polish shattered national identity and romantic ethos. This piece is then a concise, but very sincere personal take on this aesthetic.

thank you is an ensemble piece written for percussionist béatrice picard for the occasion of her final bachelor exam. as it refuses to grow, it represents sincerity, comfort and trust. it’s like a flag - an abstraction that represents something and someone. it’s also an instruction - because even those have meanings.

‘self-portrait (or a hug)’ is a short piece written originally for two toy pianos during the summer of 2023, this time fabulously performed by Maurycy Maria Stawujak on a 19th century Viennese fortepiano. I’ve never been really good at taking selfies, I rarely appear on photos too. It’s not because I’m shy (although in fact I am quite shy), but because it is not my habit. This piece, while still evidently not a photo, is a small exercise in self-indulgence - an illustration of a climactic moment in a meaningful story.
