Drumsound & Bassline Smith – Phantasm - TECH 100 Part 2

Before the reverberations of TECH 100's onslaught have even faded away, though, Drumsound and Bassline Smith are back with Part 2.



First up is “Phantasm”, infused with echoes of hardcore from the intro. Growling bass and haymaker drums maintain the assault and, even when the track breaks down, high-tension stabs punch back in giving no time to let up. This bullies ravers into moving and accepts no refusal.



Then the mood apparently lightens with “Make Some Noise”. A warm sunrise intro draws you in, but then the calm is shattered. The eponymous vocal sample is the alarm signal before a driving mid-line and drums build to a tumultuous drop. When the rave needs adrenaline to the heart, here's one to draw for.



Now that the energy level's appropriately red-lining, Drumsound and Bassline Smith keep it there with the VIP edit of “Can U Feel It”. The original has already earned its stripes in the parties of the world, and this mix twists it into the shape of an unstoppable steamroller. Bouncy percussion and syncopated bass plus the salute-to-the-old-skool sample selection make this a cut for the true heads.



Finally, we roll into “Violator”. This is call-to-action music. The intro hints at film-score elements, setting the scene for something dramatic. That drama is delivered with a monster drop. Drums, bass, swirling atmospherics and a spy-movie riff keep the plot  building into an unmissable epic.



It's still only early in 2014, but Drumsound and Bassline Smith have already set the tone. Joining the dots between the past and future of drum and bass music, double-strike of TECH 100 sets the standard for the next century of Technique Recordings releases. So don't blink, you'll want to be watching.

An upbeat summery reggae intro laced with soulful and conscious vocals from Fats leads you into a devastating and heavyweight drop. Jungle inspired drum break switches and massive sub bass tones deliver full impact; as the catchy Fats vocal states “It's the bass that's driving you crazy”. The dub version exclusive to Digital Download extends the moreish reggae intro to a full laid back dub groove.

The flip side is a fresh solo cut from Break. An uplifting synth and piano hook in the intro builds the pressure for a full on gritty and stepping drop. Tough live but studio refined beats lash down congealed with an almost over the top amount of distorted pumping bass. Punchy tom drum fills whip you back in for another time around. This one's a definite club stomper.

TECH 155 – Tantrum Desire – Gravitate (Technique Summer LP Sampler)

It's official. Technique have already kicked off shorts-and-sunshine season with the first taste of their Summer LP, in the form of Drumsound & Bassline Smith's “Holdin On”. But, just in case you were still hesitating before drawing for the bikini and sun tan lotion, here's the confirmation you were looking for. Summer's here, and Tantrum Desire's here with another slice of the album to prove it.

“Gravitate” opens into a darker-tinged soundscape than you might expect from a tune from a summer album. Evolving pads punctuated by tension-building synth-pizzicato and hints of percussion establish a shadow-laden atmosphere. As a vocal melody filters in, though, we see a chink of light, with a sheen of soul layered onto the sound. Then the darkness all makes sense, as we're delivered expertly into the red glow of festival-at-sunset vibes.

The drop gives us that Tantrum Desire goodness that we all love. Rolling drums and a bouncing bomb-burst of a bassline keep the party moving, with the eponymous “Gravitate” sample making this instantly recognisable. And then there's the sophisticated subtlety of little builds and risers to keep the energy at maximum. When the pads come back in to lead us into the breakdown, there's a whole new dimension of hands in the air euphoria added. This is a tune perfectly designed for those main stage summer-night moments.

We've been treated to two cuts from this year's Summer LP now, and Technique have brought out the big guns early. If previous compilations are anything to go by, though, even heavyweight pieces like this will only be a small fraction of what the full project has to offer. So, whatever the weather, it looks like this summer's getting a serious dose of heat.

Exploding onto the Drum & Bass scene back in 2012, Kove quickly grabbed the attention of industry heavyweights including Andy C and Futurebound. After a string of successful releases on Viper and ProgRAM, Kove hit the radar of titans Chase & Status, signing to their imprint MTA records. Diversifying his sound on the successful E.P’s ‘Measures’ and ‘Murmurations’, Kove began setting the airwaves alight with his songs ‘Searching and ‘Way We Are’ as well as his remixes for John Newman and Bastille gaining widespread support from Annie Mac, Danny Howard, Mistajam and Toddla T.  
 
Kove’s eclectic mixing style quickly made him a firm fixture on the festival circuit playing sets at Glastonbury, Lovebox, Reading & Leeds, EDC Vegas, Hideout, EXIT, Creamfields, as well as 2 nationwide tours across the U.S for Bassrush and supporting Netsky. 

Kove kicked off 2016 with the double E.P Nightfires vol. 1&2. showcasing his forward thinking production and a multi-genre approach. Songs such as ‘El Camino’ & ‘Bring Me Life’ racked up hundreds of thousands of plays on UKF & Spotify. Picking up support from BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra along the way. Finishing off the year with further remixes for Rag’n’Bone man, Emilie Sande, Sigala & WHTKD.
 
After a 12 month hiatus to explore other musical avenues, Kove is back with the new E.P ‘In From The Cold’, on DNBArena. Heading back to his roots, this 4 track Drum and Bass release is sure to set dancefloors alight.
