Bassiani Podcast 272 brings together two techno heavy-hitters for a three-hour bout of heady, rolling grooves. In one corner comes Georgian mainstay and grassroots agitator NDRX, a formative member of Tbilisi's techno contingent. His early efforts in expanding the city's nightlife offerings helped drive radical change, and shaped the decades since. His mission further translated into the founding of Stare at DJ (2012), and 11th Floor (2015). Both are vehicles for the gathering and promotion of local talent without which, Georgia today would look much different. In the other corner comes Dustin Zahn, a midwestern champion for tribal rhythms and pulsating hypnotism. Heavily armed with a flurry of references including the brain-melting IDM of the late 90s and iconoclastic beats, Dustin founded Enemy Records in 2004. In recent years, he has made appearances on labels like Blueprint, Token, and Rekids. He also hosts the Trainwrecks Podcast, an outlet for intimate face-to-face chats with industry peers. This storied duo are a menacing match, a b2b pairing that manifests the adrenaline-fueled techno native to both their sounds and whips up a sum greater than both its parts. This latest number is a bout of fevered techno havoc devised by two sonic confrères, an auditory onslaught of hammering loops recorded live at Bassiani's season closing night.

DJ Sodeyama’s murky alias The People in Fog is up next for a very special number. The DJ/producer has been active since the 90s, reshaping his home city, extensively touring the globe, releasing music, founding record labels (Arpa) and toying with different incarnations of his palette under a few different names. The People In Fog is one such project, founded a decade ago as license to lean into his more disco and house inclinations, a means of connecting with a lighter penchant for Chicago-style and Balearic rhythms. It’s a manifestation that’s given the world several first-rate releases like debut album A Ray of Light (2013), Album: 1977 (2021) and this year’s Too Much Knobs and Cables. His whistle-stop promo tour of Japan for that latest release has been whipping up plenty of shifting grooves and phase distortions, and delivering that fresh take on sound to IRL crowds in his native land. For the rest of us, the nine-tracker’s a perfect source for summer anthems: a fuzzy, analog patchwork of synths and low-end bass. Bassiani Podcast 273 takes all of this and turns up the heat, The People In Fog’s deep reverence for underground sounds is here for a two-hour mash up of grimy percussions and sensuous urban sounds. The A-side presents Obscure Shape's first face: It opens with 'Zwei Seiten', a no-frills banger that hits with immediacy and drive. 'Im Angesicht Der Zeit', the single, leans into groove and movement, offering a more fluid, time-aware flow. 'Die Haut In Der Ich Wohne' pares things back into a minimalistic, looping hypnosis, evoking the idea of inhabiting one's own skin. On the B-side, presenting the producer's second face, 'Spuren Des Werdens' features producer AMIYE and introduces more melody and saw synths, a reflection on growth and transformation. The closer, 'Von Hoffnung Getragen' – also a collaboration with AMIYE – lifts off with ethereal vocals and a bouncing rhythm, embodying the hope that carries us forward.

With the 'Zwei Gesichter' EP, Obscure Shape crafts a powerful narrative through groove, form and feeling, perfectly aligned with Backspin's evolving reinterpretation of early 2000s techno.
