Sitting On The Communion Patio

Shelf-Stable Cheese Substitute pays homage to the artist’s jazz influences, the grooving bass lines of Chicago house, and the Roland 909 drum machine that has been synonymous with Detroit techno. 

The titular track is jacking and jazzy, with funky bass articulations and moody pads. Syncopated percussive elements–shakers, bongos, toms, snares, hats, and an unyielding kick–drive a track divided by emotional piano solos.

Asiago starts deep and moody, punctuated by a thumping kick and synth stabs, while electric piano lines evoke an epic hero’s quest. K Priest’s love of the 909 shines, with cropped hat samples and a modulated clap that sails atop brooding bass synth.

I'm biased because it's home. Minneapolis has a phenomenal underground dance music scene that's grown rapidly in recent years. Old heads support up and comers, up and comers show up for the old heads. There's massive sound systems and exquisite dance floor etiquette. This all vinyl mix is made possible by Minneapolis, and exclusively features labels and artists based here.

EMP Radio Demo Derby Mix 004

Big Skies shows the artist’s growth and flexibility as a producer. The EP hopes to create indelible dancefloor moments, taking sonic inspiration from Midwest party scenes. 

Track 1, Primer, evokes the journey to the party, the warm up, the come up, the moment where the dancer feels like an extension of the sound system.

Track 2, Acid Skies, is designed for the DJ, a loopy track with a pulsating kick drum and relentless percussion that leads to a smooth, deep resolution.

Track 3, Daybreak, recalls the moment the sun peaks above the horizon–bouncing the listener on its distorted bassline from rave’s peak into the welcoming embrace of a new day’s potentiality.

Train to Milwaukee signals new dimensions of K Priest's creativity and sound design grounded in midwest dancefloor sensibilities. With four tracks sketched out on an MPC and a midi keyboard aboard the Empire Builder from St Paul to Milwaukee, this EP harnesses raw emotions of departure: longing, hope, anticipation, and joy.

Red Wing evokes the uncertainty of departure. The stress of travel, of leaving life behind, of imagining all the things you forgot, punctuated by moody synths, a growling bassline, and a thudding kick.

Winona represents the emotional change of early travel: you’re here, you’re on your way to have fun. Anchored by an off-kilter kick, the track starts sparse before resolving into soaring, shimmery pads punctuated by 909 clap fills. 

Portage marks the flip of the switch. Looking ahead to the destination, sinking into the trip. Games in the stereo field sit behind layers of bloopy synths, a garage-inspired, swinging snare, and a funky bass groove.

Milwaukee (The Parrot) is the chilled out, joyful culmination to the journey–when you finally feel present in the moment. A deep house track featuring a playful spoken vocal, ebullient synths, and a laid-back syncopated bass groove.

The vocal sample, from an undergraduate lecture on Pascal's Pensees, reminds us that "thick" words like Freedom, Greatness, Order, and Desire inhere to a text as it exists within the text, and thus outside of any preconceptions we may have about them.

Blood and Temporarily, with narration by A. Kiarina Kordela, draws on Michel Foucault’s History of Sexuality and Society Must Be Defended lectures to describe sexuality, power, ideology, race, and the body itself in terms of commodity exchange.

The result of the logic of commodity fetishism, doubled in and anticipated by the logic of biopower, plays out with devastating consequences: it is the logic that undergirds US foreign policy in the post-modern era, the logic that facilitates the ongoing genocide in Gaza.
