Integrating 40GW of offshore wind generation poses massive system integration challenges. These challenges are multi-sectoral, and require an integrated approach.

Today's guest, Bridgit Hartland-Johnson, Integrated Systems Innovation Manager at Ørsted, is well-placed to discuss these, given Ørsted's extensive involvement in offshore wind development, and Bridgit's experience working on projects on developing projects on multiple technologies (incl. battery storage and hydrogen electrolysis), and experience in many geographies (incl. France, Germany and India).

In this podcast we discuss the increasingly tight coupling between traditionally separate sectors (e.g., generation, industry, transport) and the complexity of coupled business models (e.g., for offshore wind and long-duration storage). We also discuss the need for innovation in many areas such as offshore transmission networks to keep costs down.

In our latest episode we speak with Mike Ryan, Habitat Energy’s Commercial Director for the UK. Mike uses his unique experience, in commercial roles for Habitat Energy and Anesco and in technical roles within the UK's National Grid, to provide insight on the challenges of running a power system with high renewable penetration. In particular we hear how smart solutions can meet those challenges, given the right market design.

Mike is Habitat Energy’s Commercial Director for the UK. Habitat Energy are a leader in storage optimisation and route to market services, with a focus on algorithmic trading and machine learning technologies. He was previously Asset Management Director at Anesco, responsible for their storage portfolio and took it to a market leading position. Prior to that he was at National Grid ESO in a variety of roles, including leading the ESO’s trading function, and leading on operability strategy. He has a degree in Electro-mechanical Engineering for the University of Southampton.

Mike Ryan - Smart solutions to system operability challenges

In this episode we speak with Vincent de Rul, Director of EV Solutions at EDF. Vincent talks us through how EDF is working with car companies and hardware providers to create advanced EV propositions for its customers. We also touch on vehicle-to-grid operation, how the flexibility that enables can serve as an alternative to network reinforcement and how the revenues from exploiting that flexibility could allow you to drive for 7-8,000 miles for free!

Vincent joined EDF Energy in 2016 to head the Business Development Team, and then became Business Sales Director, responsible for EDF Energy supply activity for our business customers. He is now EV Solutions Director, thus responsible for the development and sales of all Energy Solutions linked to the electrification of transport.

Dr Adam Stock is a Knowledge Exchange Fellow at the University of Strathclyde specialising in wind farm control.

In this episode Adam introduces us to the benefits of implementing smart control on wind farms. We hear how smart curtailment (at times of high wind and low demand) could increase the life of wind turbines and also enable wind turbines to provide ancillary services to support grid operation, ultimately lowering the cost of energy to consumers by lowering the cost of system operation.
A great insight on the system operability challenges that are coming down the line and how wind can help address them whilst maintaining turbine health.
