After a five-year hiatus, London based brothers, party planners, production partnership and DJ duo, Krankbrother, return to business with the release of a new three track single, ‘Get Together’.

The passage of time often dictates the creative process; family commitments, life changing events and shifts in lifestyle are there to be embraced, and Danny & Kieran Clancy have spent their downtime period in many ways, both on musical and creative paths as well as on personal journeys.  And so, it’s touching to return with a production like ‘Get Together’, with its affirming vocal line and inspirational melodies, all set to the kind of four to the floor groove that has become synonymous with Krankbrother tracks, DJ sets and parties.  And after what seems like a period of time rebounded back to the dark ages, the sentiment of ‘Get Together’ is more relevant now than it’s ever been.

On ‘All Her Loneliness’, similar tropes of positivity are offered up, with hustling beats and warm synth work weaving around micro-vocal samples, whilst ‘Same Heads’ dishes out some luscious tropical atmospherics amongst its percussive rhythms and off kilter tones.

A welcome return then for Krankbrother in their capacity as music makers and vibes men, and whose parties are still very much the staple of London’s club and festival calendar.

Krankbrother have been throwing infamous parties all over the UK & Europe for the past 6 years, regularly hosting the likes of Four Tet, Daphni, Mr. G, Gerd Janson, Paul Woolford, Roman Flugel, Levon Vincent, Derrick Carter, John Talabot & Nina Kraviz, amongst others.

Brothers Danny & Kieran Clancy now launch Krankbrother Records as an outlet for their own productions, and those of their close associates and friends from the industry. Drawing on their experience in organising their parties, the vinyl and digital label will encompass music from across the entire electronic spectrum, from disco to techno and everything in between. 

The inaugural release comes from Krankbrother themselves, a three track single that encompasses the many facets of their musical direction, from the driving and low-slung disco house vibes of “Unreserved” to the uplifting after-hours sounds of “Suburban Scandal”.

Kieran Clancy explains, “We’ve been looking to set up our own imprint for a while now, with the huge success of our parties, and especially with us breaking out of the capital city and into other UK cities, festivals and events further afield.  We also wanted our own platform for our Krankbrother productions, and to have complete control on the music and artistic design of the label. We’ve had some amazing responses to our releases on Nice Age and Classic Music, so wanted to really indulge in our own label.  We are also committed to launching new talent, so expect to hear new music from fledgling producers like Jody Barr and Joe Munday very soon”.

The krankbrother label comes back out of the blocks this May, hot on the heels of their inaugural release (produced by krankbrother themselves), with a second offering, this time from young Welsh producer Jody Barr.  Having been producing and demo-ing material for the last couple of years, Barr has been picking up some fans of late, including George FitzGerald and B-Traits, and this release on krankbrother marks his debut single, and a bright future.

With its heavy kick and growling sub-bass dominating the release opener, “Room 108” smacks of ‘big-room’ in all the right places.  Barr works the basic elements to maximum effect, serving up a hefty peak time track that straddles the line of house and techno with ease.

Continuing at this pace, “Think About It” once more relies on the powerful drums for its impact, adding dramatic rising synths and sunrise strings to carve out a most hedonistic production, whilst the energy levels don’t let up for one minute as “Arizona Dream” fuses its dubby techno sounds with goose bump inflicting pianos and soft strings to memorable effect.

Krankbrother return to their new label after opening up the imprint’s account earlier this year.  Two new tracks from the London party brothers then, showing off two differing shades of their musical dexterity.

‘When You’re Watching Me’ is a fully formed Summer belter, with Krankbrother ticking all the boxes required for a modern day, sunrise dance classic.

A thunderous sub-bass line booms over delicate drums, the percussion lightly soaked in reverb as the filters open and close on the soft & melodic arpeggiated riffs.  All the hallmarks of a classic piece of euphoric electronica are here, best exemplified by the syrupy female vox and Balearic tones, and a hefty breakdown that really ramps up the drama.  Shades of the 90’s big guns like Underworld and Fluke are here, but perhaps more in the grandiose style in which ‘When You’re Watching Me’ has been delivered, either way, it’s most certainly one of Krankbrother’s best to date.

Accompanying track, ‘Washed Up’ has its feet firmly in familiar Krankbrother territory.  A rolling, jackin’ house track packed with energy and vitality.  Chopped vocals are put through the FX mangle and the titanic drums power through in a simple, yet highly effective looping track, echoing the very best of Strictly Rhythm/Armand Van Helden joints from yesteryear.

EXCLUSIVE: Krankbrother - Turn [Krankbrother]

For the seventh Krankbrother release, Jody Barr returns to the label and presents two new cuts of straight up, analogue techno, whilst A Sagittariun hops on board with a cosmically charged remix.

“Sheila’s Demands” is a brooding and weighty slab of mechanical house, its reserved tempo lets the growling synth FX wind around granite hard beats and spacey atmospherics, dotted with drama inducing breakdowns for maximum effect.

Barr’s second cut, “Coloured Silk”, treads a similar path; tenacious beats and heavy bass stabs build the backbone whilst brass synths randomly play in discordant patterns, the solid kick drum keeping it all held together.  

A Sagittariun, delivers a remix of ‘Coloured Silk’ that could well be one of his most dancefloor friendly cuts to date.  Ramping up the tempo and snatching at the atmospheric bed of Barr’s original mix, A Sagittariun fires out a driving remix resplendent with classic techno tropes of arpeggiated acid basslines, melodic chords and wormhole synth work, classy work from ‘The Archer’.

Solid Steel in association with Serato (19th February) Our guests in Hour 2 are Krankbrother, who are brothers, DJ's, producers and run a label and monthly London party, which alongside Phonica Records is happening this weekend on 20th Feb at Fire, with our guest in Hour 1 Prins Thomas and previous guest Axel Boman. They had this to say about their mix;
"After both spending ages going through our record collections, we settled in for a listening session in our office behind our bar in East London. After playing each other a load of records and drinking a load of whiskey we realised two things. Firstly, that we had way too much music to fit on a mix, and secondly there was a lot of variety in what we’d chosen. A selector's curse made even worse by the fact there are two of us. So from there we tried to piece together as many of these records as we could whilst still allowing the mix to develop in a smooth organic way. We didn’t want the mix to jump around too erratically so we made a lot of edits to help it flow. The records we ended up choosing are a little bit of what we play and love from the last 40 years spanning acid, disco, new wave, afro beat, indie and techno. Despite the mix being quite retrospective, on a more personal level, the mix will always mark a very special moment in time for us. Shortly after we made our way to our homes from that very listening session, Kieran’s wife went into labour.  Off they went off to the hospital, Kieran on two hours sleep and a whiskey head and shortly after we welcomed yet another Clancy boy into the family.”

Solid Steel Radio Show 19/2/2016 Hour 2 - Krankbrother

Krankbrother’s productions just keep getting better. Now up to their eighth release on their self-titled label, the London-based siblings’ latest EP is their best yet. ‘Paradigm Shift’ kicks off with swinging drums, glossy vox and, dare we say it, a slightly trance-y feel — we can imagine this one soothing dancefloors in Ibiza as the sun comes up. B-side ‘Right There With You’ boasts a stretchy 303 loop and booming house b-line better aligned with Berlin than Van Buuren, signing off another superb release from the duo.

Joe Munday first surfaced on Krankbrother last June, with the eclectic and diverse “Ama’s House” EP, which came backed with a remix from Mark E.

Munday returns to the label this Summer with a trio of tracks that, whilst they forge a slightly straighter path musically, are still filled with the flecks of imaginative jazz sounds and ingenious use of cut up samples.

On lead track, “Sunshine”, Munday goes for glorious early riser vibes, using a palette of emotive sounds, growling bass, vocal cuts and discordant drums to function a mesmersing ambient house masterclass.

Jazz motifs are fully in play for “Hugh Grant”; deft Rhodes keys in the intro break out to a full swinging jazz house moment, call and response pianos riff neatly as the shuffling beats holds it all down like glue, without overpowering the musicality and Munday’s freestyle arrangement.

Wrapping up the EP, “As Free As She Sounds” marries atmospheric live drums and a sassy garage vocal hook as the track flowers into a low slung and hypnotizing production.  Big double bass licks and blasts of saxophone play off the rising pads for a real classy track from Munday and another well-rounded release from this talented producer.

Krankbrother serve up two tasty new tracks for the tenth release on their own label.  The London DJs/producers/promoters have been flexing their musical muscle since the labels inception last year, providing a platform for new artists like Joe Munday, The Organ Grinder and Jody Barr, serving up remixes from Prins Thomas, Mark E and A Sagittariun, and of course dropping some heavy weight productions of their own.

The crackles and dusty ambience that opens ‘Outré’ pave way to a deliciously deep and driving track; ethereal stabs and grandiose strings provide the sonic landscape for the melodious synth motifs and choppy vocal refrains, thick with emotive sound and Detroit techno sensibilities.  

‘Zauna’, with its tribal rhythm and domineering bassline, provides a heady concoction of gritty drums, frenetic percussion, wandering synth riffs and hypnotizing vocal chants, cleverly sampled and arranged from he afrobeat sounds from Nigeria.  Another charging and powerful club cut to add to the Krankbrother arsenal….

Brothers Danny and Kieran Clancy continue their run of highly infectious, club-centric singles, releasing once again on their own Krankbrother imprint which has built up a consistent catalogue of music since the label’s inception in 2015.

“Dreamscape” may share the name of legendary 90s raves, but here, Krankbrother lay out an understated house groove driven by its melodious bass and supple chords.  Gradually picking up the energy by deploying contagious acid lines, celestial vocal refrains, and ramping up the drums with crisp open hats and transposing rides, it’s a feel good track and mood lifter of the highest order.

Hotly tipped producer, Fort Romeau, is enlisted on remix duties, off the back of stellar singles, remixes and albums for the likes of Futureboogie, Spectral Sound, Running Back and Ghostly International.  Rolling house beats get wrapped up in those gorgeous pads as the remix takes on a transcendental twist as the 303s worm around the arrangement, the hushed female vox providing a big wall of succulent sound that provides a great alternate take on the original mix.

A respectful nod to the past is ever present in the Krankbrother’s productions, but with a production aesthetic that keeps things fresh and relevant for the most discerning of modern dancefloors.  This is most evident in “Disappear Here”; lush and ample pads set a familiar tone as high strings and a nimble lead riff usher in a killer breakbeat, accentuated with a contagious bassline and sub bass booms.  Sun rising vibes if ever there was!!
